Yes. Xbox Series X|S can play most Xbox One games through backward compatibility. Digital purchases tied to your Microsoft account appear in Ready to Install. A supported Xbox One disc can be used on Series X, but the console installs the game and the disc must remain inserted whenever you play. Series S has no disc drive, so it accepts digital games only. Compatibility, downloads and performance improvements vary by title.
What Xbox Series X|S backward compatibility actually covers
Xbox describes the Series X|S catalog as covering “most Xbox One games,” not every release. The official backward-compatibility catalog identifies titles that work and maintains an excluded-games list. A game being sold for Xbox One therefore does not, by itself, guarantee that it runs on a Series console.

Backward compatibility is a platform feature rather than a new purchase. If you own a supported digital title, sign in with the Microsoft account that owns it. If you own a supported Xbox One disc, Series X can use the disc as proof of ownership. You still need to install or download the game, and online multiplayer may require its own Xbox subscription.

If your Xbox One collection is mainly discs, Series X is the relevant model. Series S is appropriate only when the games you intend to play are available digitally or you are prepared to acquire digital copies.

How digital Xbox One games transfer
Use the account that owns the game
Digital licenses are associated with the Microsoft account that purchased or redeemed the game. On the Series console, sign in to that account. A title that is both owned by the account and included in the backward-compatible catalog should appear in the console’s Ready to Install section.
Find the game in Ready to Install
- Turn on the Series X or Series S and connect it to the internet.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used to buy the Xbox One game.
- Open your games and apps library and select Ready to Install.
- Choose the compatible Xbox One title and start the download.
- Wait for installation and any title updates before launching the game.
Microsoft’s compatibility FAQ says that owned digital titles in the Back Compat catalog automatically show in Ready to Install. A listing does not mean every Xbox One edition or feature is identical: the game may require a substantial download, and some title-specific functions can differ on Series hardware.
How Xbox One discs work on Series X
Installation is required
Insert a supported Xbox One game disc into the Series X disc drive. The console uses the disc to identify the game and downloads or installs the playable files to internal storage. Xbox Wire described the process as inserting the disc, installing the game and then playing on Series X.

The disc remains your license check
After installation, leave the same disc in the drive whenever you play. Removing it or inserting a different disc removes the ownership check, even if the game files remain on the console. An internet connection may be needed to obtain the installation package and updates.

What Series S cannot do
Series S is digital-only. It cannot read an Xbox One disc, install from that disc or validate a disc license. A physical copy must be replaced with a supported digital entitlement before it can be played on Series S.
Moving games from an external drive
Xbox says games already installed on an external drive can be brought to either Series console. This can save time when transferring a large library because you may not need to download every game again. The transfer does not bypass compatibility: each title still has to be in the supported catalog, and a disc-owned game still requires its disc on Series X.
- Safely disconnect the external drive from the Xbox One.
- Connect it to the Series X or Series S using a compatible USB connection.
- Open the games and apps library and identify the installed titles.
- Move or copy a compatible game to the destination storage, or launch it from the external drive if the console allows that installation.
- Apply any required update before playing.
Use an Xbox-compatible external USB storage drive when you need to carry a large library between consoles. Storage capacity, transfer speed and the game’s own requirements determine how long the move takes.

Some do, but there is no universal enhancement level. Xbox lists possible improvements including higher resolution, faster frame rates, improved textures and Auto HDR. These features are implemented on a game-by-game basis, so one title may receive several improvements while another runs much like it did on Xbox One.

Resolution and image quality
A compatible game can render at a higher resolution on newer hardware, but the exact resolution depends on the title’s update and graphics settings. Do not treat “backward compatible” as a promise of a fixed 4K output.
Frame rate
Some games can deliver a higher or steadier frame rate on Series hardware. The supported frame-rate mode, display output and game update determine what you see; the catalog does not guarantee a specific number for every title.
Textures and Auto HDR
Improved textures and Auto HDR are additional possibilities, not automatic properties of every compatible game. Check the individual title’s compatibility information and in-game options for the features that actually apply.
What backward compatibility does not guarantee
- Every Xbox One game: the catalog is selective and includes exclusions.
- Every edition or add-on: downloadable content, regional versions and special editions can have title-specific requirements.
- Offline installation: downloads and updates are commonly required, even when you own a disc.
- Identical features: multiplayer modes, saved-data behavior and enhancements can vary by game.
- Free online multiplayer: owning the game and running it are separate from any subscription requirement for online play.
Before buying or carrying a game forward, check the official Xbox backward-compatibility catalog for that exact title. If it is absent or listed as excluded, Series X|S compatibility should not be assumed.

Online play, ownership and saved progress
Ownership still matters
Backward compatibility does not grant games you never purchased. Digital access depends on the account that owns the license. Disc access depends on inserting a supported disc into Series X. A family member’s purchase may work only when the console and account-sharing arrangement provide the appropriate license.
Online multiplayer is a separate requirement
A compatible game can launch without online services, yet its multiplayer mode may require an Xbox subscription or the publisher’s service. Check the game’s current multiplayer requirements rather than assuming backward compatibility includes online access.
Updates and saves
Series consoles may download updated game files before play. Existing installations can be transferred from an external drive, but the console can still request an update. Keep the console connected long enough to complete downloads if a title will not start immediately.
Troubleshooting common problems
The game is missing from Ready to Install
- Confirm that you are signed in to the purchasing Microsoft account.
- Check the official catalog to verify that the title is supported.
- Look for a different edition or bundle name in your library.
- Check whether the purchase was made on another account or region.
The disc installs but the game will not launch
- Verify that the disc is an Xbox One title listed as compatible.
- Leave the original disc in the Series X drive after installation.
- Install pending console and game updates.
- Remove and reinsert the disc if the license check did not register.
A transferred game does not run
- Confirm that the title itself is compatible; an external drive does not make an unsupported game playable.
- Allow the console to download the current version or update.
- For a disc-owned game on Series X, insert the matching disc even if all files were copied from storage.
Performance is unchanged
Enhancements are optional and title-specific. If the catalog does not identify a resolution, frame-rate, texture or Auto HDR improvement for your game, normal backward-compatible operation may be the expected result.

The 2026 disc-to-digital Insider feature
On August 26, 2026, Xbox announced an Insider feature for supported disc-based games. In testing, inserting a disc can allow a player to claim a digital entitlement. Xbox said the program would begin with Insiders, cover thousands of titles and not include every title at launch.
This is a limited, changing program—not a blanket conversion of every Xbox One disc. Availability depends on the individual game and the stage of the Insider rollout. Until a title is explicitly eligible, continue to treat the disc as required for Series X play and unusable on Series S.
Which Series console fits your Xbox One library?
Choose Series X when physical media matters
Series X is the practical choice if you own a substantial collection of supported Xbox One discs. It can install those games and use the disc for the ongoing license check, while also supporting compatible digital purchases and external-drive transfers.

Series S works when the games you want are digital purchases or can be obtained digitally. Audit your Xbox One library before switching: a shelf of discs is not transferable to Series S simply because the same games may be backward compatible on Series X.
Plan storage and downloads
Both consoles install playable files and may require updates. A large library can consume internal storage quickly, so plan transfers with an Xbox-compatible external USB storage drive and allow time for downloads when a game has not already been installed.
Bottom line for Xbox One owners
Most Xbox One games work on Xbox Series X|S, and backward compatibility itself costs nothing beyond owning the game. Digital titles follow the owning Microsoft account; supported discs work on Series X with the disc left inserted; Series S accepts digital games only. Because the catalog and enhancements are title-specific, verify each game before you rely on it, especially when choosing between a disc-based Series X library and an all-digital Series S setup.
