Can You Play Xbox Games on PS5 With Cloud Gaming? Common Questions Answered

No. Xbox Cloud Gaming is not an officially supported way to play Xbox games on a PlayStation 5. Xbox’s current supported-device guidance lists browsers, Windows PCs, phones, tablets, Xbox consoles, selected smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Meta Quest headsets and other streaming devices—but not PS5. A Game Pass subscription therefore does not add Xbox cloud streaming to the console.

You can still stream Xbox games on the same television by using a supported smart-TV app or a compatible Fire TV device. That is a separate setup, not a PS5 feature or an accessory that turns the PS5 into an Xbox cloud client.

What Xbox officially supports

Xbox describes Cloud Gaming as a way to play supported console games without installing them on every device. The official service page lists supported browsers, Windows PCs, phones and tablets, Xbox consoles, selected smart TVs, Amazon Fire TV, Meta Quest headsets and other compatible streaming hardware. Play normally requires an eligible Game Pass subscription, a supported game and a supported region. Xbox also offers selected free-to-play cloud games with only a free Microsoft account. See the current requirements at Xbox Cloud Gaming.

PS5 is absent from that supported-device list. That is the decisive distinction: the service may work on many kinds of screens, but Xbox has not documented PS5 as a supported client. An undocumented workaround could stop working after a browser, app or service update and is not a reliable method to recommend.

Does a Game Pass subscription make PS5 compatible?

No. Game Pass determines which games and cloud features your account can use; it does not change the hardware supported by Xbox’s streaming service. Buying Game Pass Ultimate, signing in with a Microsoft account or pairing a controller cannot make PS5 an officially supported Xbox Cloud Gaming device.

Why the PS5 itself cannot be treated as an Xbox cloud device

Xbox’s published compatibility guidance names the device families and operating systems for which it provides a supported experience. PS5 is not one of them. That means there is no Xbox-supported PS5 app or PS5 setup path to follow, and Xbox does not promise performance, controls, updates or account functionality on the console.

This is different from using the same television. A TV can display a PS5 through one HDMI input and run a supported Xbox app through its own software, or through a Fire TV stick connected to another HDMI input. The television is the screen in both cases, but the streaming client is the TV platform or streaming device—not the PS5.

Supported ways to stream Xbox games on a TV

If your goal is to play Xbox games from the sofa, you have supported options that do not involve the PS5 as the streaming host. Xbox’s TV guidance currently covers selected LG, Samsung and VIDAA televisions, plus specific Amazon Fire TV hardware. Compatibility is model-specific, so check the exact model and local availability before buying or configuring anything at Xbox on TVs.

Route What Xbox lists What you need Relationship to PS5
Amazon Fire TV Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen) and Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen) Supported Fire TV model, Xbox app, eligible subscription or supported free-to-play title, compatible controller and internet connection Separate streaming route; the PS5 is not required and does not provide the Xbox app
LG television LG TVs running webOS 24 or newer, where the service is available Compatible TV, Xbox app, eligible account and controller Uses the TV’s software, not the PS5
Samsung television Selected Samsung TV models Compatible model, Xbox app, eligible account and controller Uses the TV’s software, not the PS5
VIDAA television Selected devices running supported VIDAA software Compatible model, service availability, account and controller Uses the TV’s software, not the PS5
Browser, PC, phone or tablet Supported browser or Xbox app/device combination Compatible device, account, game and controller or touch controls where offered Not a PS5 support statement; Xbox does not list PS5 as an approved client

Xbox says game availability can vary by subscription plan, region, platform and time. The catalog is not a promise that every Xbox title is streamable, even when the title runs on an Xbox console.

How to use the supported Fire TV route

Fire TV is the clearest alternative when you want Xbox streaming on the television currently connected to your PS5. It does not install anything on the PS5; it adds a separate streaming client to an HDMI port.

  1. Verify the hardware. Confirm that your device is one of the Fire TV models listed by Xbox: Fire TV Stick 4K Max (1st Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen), Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen) or Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen). Model names can look similar, so check the exact generation.
  2. Check availability. Xbox availability is region- and model-dependent. Open the official TV guidance and confirm that cloud gaming and the Xbox app are offered where you live.
  3. Connect the device. Plug the Fire TV device into an available HDMI port, connect its power supply and complete the Fire TV setup. Select that HDMI input when you want to use Xbox streaming.
  4. Install and open the Xbox app. Use the Fire TV app store to find the Xbox app, install it and sign in with the Microsoft account that holds your eligible Game Pass access, or use a supported free-to-play title with a free Microsoft account.
  5. Pair a controller. Put a compatible Bluetooth controller into pairing mode and add it under Fire TV’s controller settings. Xbox’s 2024 Fire TV announcement names Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4 as supported with the Fire TV app. This controller compatibility applies to Fire TV; it does not mean the Xbox app runs on PS5.
  6. Choose a cloud-playable game. Browse the titles available to your plan and region. Start the game only after the app identifies it as playable through the cloud.

In its Fire TV announcement, Xbox executive Ashley McKissick said players need a Fire TV Stick, a Bluetooth-enabled wireless controller and an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate membership for access to hundreds of games, including Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Starfield and Forza Horizon 5. That statement describes the Fire TV rollout; it is not a PS5 compatibility announcement.

Can you use a DualSense controller?

Yes, in the supported Fire TV setup, Xbox specifically lists the PlayStation DualSense and DualShock 4 among controllers that work with the Fire TV app. You pair the controller to Fire TV over Bluetooth, just as you would with another compatible wireless controller.

There are two limits to keep straight:

  • A DualSense pairing with Fire TV does not make the PS5 an Xbox Cloud Gaming device.
  • Controller support does not guarantee that every feature of a DualSense—such as adaptive triggers or advanced haptics—will operate in every streamed game. Xbox’s guidance establishes compatibility with the Fire TV app, not universal feature parity.

Xbox’s current cloud guidance also says a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller is needed for most devices, while some games offer touch controls. The exact input options are shown by the service and can vary by game.

Internet speed and network setup

Xbox’s current cloud-gaming setup guidance gives a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps. Xbox notes that some devices may require 20 Mbps for best quality. For TV streaming, its dedicated TV guidance recommends a 20 Mbps connection and either wired networking or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. These are guidance levels, not a guarantee of a flawless session; the result also depends on latency, household traffic, location and the device itself.

Practical network checklist

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when a wired connection is not practical, and keep the streaming device within good router range.
  • Prefer Ethernet for a TV or Fire TV setup when your hardware and router support it.
  • Pause large downloads, cloud backups and high-bandwidth video streams on the same connection while playing.
  • Restart the router and streaming device if the app repeatedly drops quality or fails to start a session.
  • Remember that a speed test showing 20 Mbps does not measure every source of delay; wireless interference and distance to the service can still affect input response.

Which games and subscriptions work?

Most cloud games require an active eligible Game Pass subscription, and the game must be available for cloud play in your region and on your device. Xbox’s catalog and plan benefits change, so a game that appears in one plan or country may not appear in another. Xbox also allows selected games that you own or buy to be streamed on supported devices, but that feature has two important limits: only eligible titles can be streamed, and it does not make every owned Xbox game cloud-playable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Selected free-to-play games can be played with a free Microsoft account, according to Xbox. A subscription is therefore not always required, but the game, device and region still have to be supported. None of these account options changes the PS5’s unsupported status.

Choosing the right alternative

Your goal Most suitable supported approach Important check
Use the PS5 console itself to run Xbox Cloud Gaming No officially supported route Xbox does not list PS5; do not treat a subscription or accessory as a fix
Play Xbox cloud games on the same TV Compatible LG, Samsung or VIDAA TV app, or supported Fire TV hardware Verify the exact TV or Fire TV model and local availability
Use a controller already owned DualSense or DualShock 4 on the supported Fire TV app, where paired successfully Compatibility is with Fire TV, not PS5 Xbox streaming
Avoid paying for Game Pass first Check the game, plan, region and device requirements before subscribing Most cloud games need an eligible plan; selected free-to-play games do not
Stream with the best TV connection available Wired network or 5 GHz Wi-Fi at about 20 Mbps recommended by Xbox for TV Latency and local congestion still affect play

Common questions answered

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming work on PS5?

Xbox does not list PS5 as a supported device, so there is no officially supported PS5 method. Use a supported browser, PC, mobile device, smart TV or Fire TV hardware instead.

Can I use Game Pass on a PS5?

You may have a Microsoft account and Game Pass subscription, but the subscription does not provide an Xbox Cloud Gaming client for PS5. It grants access only through supported devices and eligible games.

Can I connect a PS5 to a TV and then launch Xbox games through it?

The PS5 can remain connected to the television for PlayStation games, while a supported TV app or Fire TV device uses another input for Xbox cloud streaming. The PS5 does not relay or host that Xbox session.

Will any Fire TV Stick work?

No. Xbox names specific supported models, including both generations of Fire TV Stick 4K Max, the second-generation Fire TV Stick 4K and the third-generation Fire TV Cube. Check the exact model before purchasing.

Can I stream every Xbox game I own?

No. Xbox supports streaming for selected owned or purchased games, but eligibility varies. A game must be cloud-playable and available for your account, region and device.

Is 10 Mbps enough for TV play?

Xbox gives 10 Mbps as a minimum download-speed figure and recommends 20 Mbps, with wired or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, for best TV performance. Actual results depend on latency, congestion, location and hardware.

The bottom line for PS5 owners

There is no supported way to play Xbox games through Xbox Cloud Gaming on the PS5 itself. If you want Xbox streaming on the same television, use a model-specific Xbox app on a supported smart TV or add a supported Fire TV device, then meet the account, game, controller and network requirements. A DualSense can be useful in the Fire TV setup, but it does not change the console compatibility decision.
