Can you play Xbox games on PS5 and other consoles?

Usually, no. An Xbox console game does not run directly on a PS5, and buying it for Xbox does not create a PlayStation 5 license. You have three practical routes: play it on Xbox Series X|S, buy a separately released PS5 edition when one exists, or stream it through Xbox Cloud Gaming on a device Microsoft supports.

Xbox Play Anywhere links eligible purchases between Xbox, Windows PC and supported handhelds, not PS5. Microsoft’s cloud service can synchronize progress, purchases and add-ons across its supported Xbox, PC and cloud endpoints, but Microsoft’s current client list does not name PS5. Availability also changes by game, release date and region, so check the individual PlayStation Store listing before assuming a title is supported.

First, separate the three ways a game can be “on” a console

The answer depends on whether you mean running Xbox software locally, owning a PlayStation version, or viewing a streamed game.

Native Xbox software

A native Xbox release is installed and executed by Xbox hardware. Xbox Series X|S is the direct route for games sold as Xbox console titles. A PS5 cannot install or execute that Xbox console build because the two systems use different operating systems, storefront entitlements and development environments.

A separately published PS5 edition

Some games associated with Xbox are also released as dedicated PS5 products. That is a new platform release, not a conversion of your Xbox purchase. The PS5 version has its own store listing and entitlement, and its save or achievement systems may be handled separately from the Xbox version.

Streaming from a game service

Cloud gaming sends the game’s video and audio to your device while your controller inputs travel back to a remote server. You are not installing the Xbox console build on the PS5. The service must explicitly support the device and the particular game, and the quality of play depends on your connection and the service’s availability.

Does Xbox Play Anywhere work on PS5?

No. Xbox Play Anywhere is an Xbox ecosystem entitlement. Microsoft says one purchase can provide the Xbox console and Windows PC versions, with supported handheld access, shared progression and achievements at no additional cost. Its current program page lists more than 1,000 enabled titles and says more than half of players use more than one device.

The entitlement stops at Microsoft’s supported platforms. It does not include a PS5 license, a PlayStation download or a PlayStation save conversion. If you own an Xbox Play Anywhere game and then sign in on a PS5, the console cannot claim that Xbox purchase from the PlayStation Store.

Microsoft described the model in its 2025 Xbox Games Showcase announcement: “With a single purchase, they can play with Xbox, including their progress and achievements, across Xbox console, PC and Xbox Ally—at no additional cost.” The platforms named in that statement do not include PS5.

Which Xbox-associated games are available on PS5?

Only titles with an actual PS5 release can be played natively on PS5. Microsoft’s 2025 showcase identified the following examples. Release timing, editions and regional availability can change, so use the game’s current PlayStation Store page as the final check.

Title Platforms identified by Microsoft What an Xbox owner should know
Gears of War: Reloaded Xbox Series X|S, Xbox PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam and PS5; cross-play and cross-progression The PS5 edition is a separate platform release. Cross-progression does not mean the Xbox purchase automatically unlocks the PS5 copy.
Ninja Gaiden 4 PS5 and the Xbox ecosystem platforms listed in the showcase Confirm the exact edition and launch status in your region before buying.
The Outer Worlds 2 PS5 and the Xbox ecosystem platforms listed in the showcase Check the current PS5 listing; platform features can differ by edition.
Fallout 76 PS5 and Xbox platforms A PS5 player uses the PlayStation release and its applicable account and save rules.
The Elder Scrolls Online PS5 and Xbox platforms Online-service progression and account behavior should be checked in the game’s current support information.
Sea of Thieves PS5 and Xbox platforms Availability on PS5 is tied to the separate PlayStation release, not Xbox ownership.

Microsoft’s move toward selected rival-console releases was confirmed by The Associated Press on February 15, 2024. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said, “The teams that are building those games have announced plans that are not too far away.” AP reported at that time that Starfield and Indiana Jones were not among the four formerly exclusive Xbox games then announced for rival consoles. That 2024 snapshot should not be treated as a permanent catalog: publishers can announce later ports, delays or regional restrictions.

Can you use Xbox Cloud Gaming on a PS5?

Microsoft’s cited GDC 2025 documentation does not list PS5 as an Xbox Cloud Gaming client. It describes support for virtually any device with a compatible web browser, including iPhone and iPad, Android devices, Chromebooks and non-gaming PCs, as well as Samsung televisions, Fire TV devices and Meta Quest headsets. Because PS5 is not named, treat Xbox Cloud Gaming on PS5 as unsupported unless Microsoft publishes an explicit PS5 client or browser pathway.

  • HDMI Features: Auto Low Latency Mode, HDMI Variable Refresh Rate, AMD FreeSync.

A browser on another supported device is not the same as running Xbox Cloud Gaming through the PS5’s browser. Console browser capabilities, authentication, controller APIs and video requirements can prevent a service from working even when a general web browser is supported. Do not buy an Xbox game expecting the PS5 to become a cloud client later.

Microsoft says, “Game progress, purchases, and add-ons synchronize seamlessly across console, PC, and cloud.” That synchronization applies to the Xbox ecosystem endpoints Microsoft documents. It does not create a PlayStation entitlement. Microsoft reported 140 million hours streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming between October and December 2024, showing substantial use of the service, but that figure does not establish PS5 support.

Controller support is not the same as PS5 support

Microsoft’s cloud documentation says the service supports Xbox controllers, PlayStation DualSense and DualShock controllers, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers over Bluetooth. You can therefore use a DualSense with Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported phone, PC, television or other client. This does not mean a PS5 is an approved Xbox Cloud Gaming device; it only describes the controller as an input option on supported clients.

What can the PS5 stream by itself?

PS5 has its own streaming and remote-play features, but they solve a different problem. Sony’s PS5 feature information describes PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming for selected games from the PlayStation library. It also describes Remote Play for PlayStation devices, which streams games from a PlayStation console to another compatible device.

Neither feature imports Xbox purchases. A game must be in the applicable PlayStation catalog for PlayStation Plus Premium, or it must be installed on a PlayStation console for Remote Play. These services do not turn an Xbox account, Xbox disc or Xbox Play Anywhere entitlement into a PS5 game.

Native ownership versus streaming access

Route Where the game runs How you obtain access Save and progression behavior Main limitations
Xbox Series X|S On Xbox hardware Xbox purchase or other eligible Xbox access Xbox ecosystem saves and achievements; Play Anywhere titles can share progress with Windows PC and supported handhelds Requires Xbox hardware; no automatic PS5 license
PS5 port Locally on PS5 Buy or claim the separate PS5 edition Depends on the game’s own cross-progression and account implementation Only games with an official PS5 release qualify; availability can vary by region and date
Xbox Cloud Gaming on a supported device Remote Microsoft servers Use a supported device, compatible controller and the required service access for the game Microsoft documents synchronization of progress, purchases and add-ons across Xbox, PC and cloud PS5 is not named as a client; performance depends on network conditions and service availability
PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming Remote Sony servers to PS5 Use eligible PlayStation Plus Premium access and a selected PlayStation title Uses PlayStation’s account and catalog rules Does not include Xbox purchases or the Xbox catalog

How to choose the right route

  1. Identify the exact game and edition. A franchise may have an Xbox release, a PS5 release, a PC release and a cloud-enabled edition with different dates and features.
  2. Check the current PS5 listing. Search the PlayStation Store for the game’s exact title. A listing that says PS5 is evidence of a native port; an Xbox store purchase alone is not.
  3. Decide whether local installation matters. If you need offline play, the PS5 edition or Xbox Series X|S is the relevant route. Streaming requires an active connection throughout play.
  4. Check progression promises. Look for explicit cross-progression language. Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together; it does not necessarily transfer ownership or saves.
  5. For cloud play, verify the client first. Use a device Microsoft explicitly supports, pair a compatible controller and confirm that the game is available through the service in your location.

Step-by-step: playing a game that has a PS5 version

  1. Open the PlayStation Store on the PS5 or on the web and search the exact game title.
  2. Check that the product page identifies a PS5 version rather than only a PS4 version, add-on or soundtrack.
  3. Review the edition description for online requirements, release date, regional restrictions and any statement about cross-progression.
  4. Purchase or redeem the PS5 edition through the PlayStation account that will play it.
  5. Install the game and sign in to the game’s required account, if applicable. Use the game publisher’s documented linking process if it advertises cross-progression.

Your Xbox receipt, disc or Play Anywhere ownership is not a substitute for these PlayStation Store steps.

Step-by-step: using an Xbox console or supported cloud device

Xbox Series X|S

  1. Use an Xbox Series X|S console and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the game or has the required access.
  2. Install the Xbox edition from the Xbox library or store.
  3. For a Play Anywhere title, sign in with the same Microsoft account on a supported Windows PC or handheld to access the linked version and synchronized progression.

Supported cloud endpoint

  1. Choose a Microsoft-documented client such as a compatible iOS or Android device, Chromebook, non-gaming PC, Samsung TV, Fire TV device or Meta Quest headset.
  2. Open the official Xbox Cloud Gaming experience on that device and sign in with the account that has the required access.
  3. Pair an Xbox, DualSense, DualShock or Nintendo Switch Pro Bluetooth controller.
  4. Select a cloud-enabled game and test input response before committing to a long session.
  5. Keep the device on a stable connection. Video quality, input delay and disconnects are streaming issues, not signs that the PS5 version has been unlocked.

Common misunderstandings and fixes

“I bought it on Xbox, so it should appear in my PS5 library.”

Xbox and PlayStation stores issue separate licenses. Search for a PS5 listing and obtain that edition if one exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The game has cross-play, so my purchase should transfer.”

Cross-play concerns multiplayer compatibility. Ownership transfer is a separate publisher and platform policy. Look for explicit cross-buy or cross-progression wording rather than inferring it from cross-play.

“A DualSense works with Xbox Cloud Gaming, so PS5 must be supported.”

The controller can be supported while the console is not. Microsoft’s documented controller list and documented client list are separate; the current client list does not name PS5.

“The title was announced for PlayStation, but I cannot find it.”

Check the release date, region, edition name and whether the announcement referred to PS5 specifically. Availability can change after an announcement, and a game may launch on Xbox or PC before its PS5 edition.

“My progress did not appear on the PS5 port.”

Cross-progression must be implemented by that game and its accounts. Xbox Play Anywhere synchronization covers Microsoft’s Xbox, PC and supported-handheld ecosystem; it does not promise conversion to a PS5 save.

The practical answer for each situation

  • You want the Xbox console version: use Xbox Series X|S.
  • You want to play on PS5: choose a game with a separately released PS5 edition and obtain that edition through PlayStation.
  • You want to stream without an Xbox console: use a device Microsoft explicitly lists for Xbox Cloud Gaming; PS5 is not currently listed in the cited documentation.
  • You only have a PS5 and an Xbox purchase: assume it will not run until the game’s official PS5 listing confirms a separate release.
