What you are installing
A free Windows demo
The Steam listing is a free demo. SteamDB identifies the build as a Windows 64-bit executable named Hela.exe, rather than a native Linux or SteamOS application. On a Windows PC that distinction is mostly invisible; on Steam Deck it determines how the game runs.
Controller and touchscreen support
The Steam metadata lists full controller support and a touchscreen configuration. That should give you a reasonable starting point for Deck controls, but metadata is not a substitute for testing every action in the demo. Check movement, camera control, menus, interaction prompts and any input that matters during the opening minutes.
Unreal Engine, FSR and DLSS metadata
SteamDB detects Unreal Engine components and software-development-kit files associated with AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS. Detection of those files does not prove that the demo exposes FSR or DLSS switches in its graphics menu. Do not assume that an upscaling option is available, or that changing one is necessary, until you can see it in the build installed on your Deck.
Why Proton is involved
SteamOS runs this Windows executable through Proton, Valve’s Steam Play compatibility layer. Proton translates the Windows game’s expected interfaces so they can work with the Linux-based operating system on the Deck. Valve’s Deck compatibility program also considers whether Proton and the game’s middleware work correctly, not just whether the executable launches.
Because the demo is Windows-only, a successful launch is a compatibility result, not evidence that the game has a native Linux version. Proton behavior can change with a game update, a SteamOS update or a different compatibility-tool build. Install and launch the demo
- Add the demo to your Steam library. Use the demo’s Steam page, choose the free download option and allow it to finish installing on the Deck’s internal storage or your configured game-storage location.
- Start in Gaming Mode. Open the Library, select Hela, and press Play with the default compatibility configuration. Do not begin by forcing a particular Proton version; no specific version is proven necessary by the available evidence.
- Wait through the first launch. Give the game time to create its first-run files and reach its main menu. A longer initial pause is not, by itself, proof that the demo is incompatible.

- Keep the change only if it improves the result without introducing a new input or rendering problem.

Confirm that the installation completed, restart Steam, and try the default launch once more. The game launches but the picture is wrong
Return to the default graphics settings and test again before changing several options. If the problem appears only under one compatibility tool, record that result and try another installed tool using the same settings. The evidence does not identify a known universal rendering fix, so avoid treating a single workaround as guaranteed.
Controls do not behave as expected
Verify that you launched the Steam version from Gaming Mode and test the built-in controller in the main menu as well as in play. Is the Hela demo Steam Deck Verified?
The cited evidence does not show a current official Verified or Playable badge for the demo. Valve’s program evaluates whether a Windows game and its middleware function through Proton, while a community report simply records what happened on one player’s Deck. The demo is free, the available report describes successful play, and the installation requires no physical game or special accessory. Start with the normal Steam setup, keep the first run at default settings, and use the Compatibility menu only when a concrete launch, rendering or input problem gives you a reason to test an override.
Expect a potentially steady experience around the reported 35 fps level, but leave room for different results on your Deck and after updates.
