That description explains the gameplay goal; it does not prove that the mod has the same files, scripting hooks, or launcher behavior as the original mode.

Steam Deck uses SteamOS, while many PC games supplied through Steam are Windows builds. Proton translates the Windows game into an environment SteamOS can run, so a mod has two separate compatibility layers: the base game must launch through Proton, and the mod must work inside that Proton environment.

The available announcement does not state which executable the survival mod changes, whether it needs a custom loader, whether it ships as loose files or a package, or whether it expects a Windows-only manager. It also does not document a required Proton release, launch option, separate prefix, controller mapping, or measured performance on Deck. Those omissions matter because a mod can work on a Windows desktop yet fail before the game reaches its menu under Proton.
General Steam Deck guidance from Bethesda recommends trying the latest Proton version available in Steam and lowering graphics settings when a Windows game has trouble launching or performing. That is sensible troubleshooting for the base game, but it is platform advice rather than a test result for this survival mod.
Choose the correct Ghostbusters edition first
Edition matching is the first practical decision. The original PC manual documents the Survival rules, while Ghostbusters: The Video Game Remastered has a Steam PC release and a Steam Community mod guide that explains a Linux file path and mod-manager workflow. The mod announcement, however, does not clearly state whether its files target the original PC release, the Remastered release, or both.

Do not copy files from a guide for a different edition simply because the folder name looks similar. A Remastered path is useful only when the installed game and the mod’s target match.
Prepare the Deck before installing anything
Make the first attempt reversible. A clean installation gives you a known baseline and makes it possible to identify whether a failure comes from the game, Proton, or the mod.
- Install the Ghostbusters edition named by the mod author, if the author specifies one. If no edition is specified, record which Steam product you own before downloading files.
- Launch the unmodified game once in Gaming Mode. Confirm that it reaches gameplay and that your controller, audio, and save creation work without the mod.
- Create a save backup. Copy the game’s save data to another location before changing game files; the exact save directory is not given in the available material, so use Steam’s own backup facilities or locate the game’s existing save folder in Desktop Mode rather than guessing.
- Download the mod only from the location named by its author and read the release notes for the required edition, loader, manager, and Proton assumptions. Those details are not supplied by the announcement itself.
- Switch to Desktop Mode so you can inspect directories, extract archives, and run any manager the author requires. Return to Gaming Mode only after the files are in place.
Install it as a controlled experiment

- Open the game folder in Desktop Mode. For a Steam installation of the Remastered edition, the Steam Community guide identifies
$HOME/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/Ghostbusters The Video Game Remastered/as the typical Linux location. Steam libraries installed on another drive can use a different root, so use Steam’s storage settings or the game’s local-files command to open the actual directory. - Keep an untouched copy. Before adding anything, duplicate the clean folder or make a file-level backup. This is faster and safer than trying to remember which files a failed mod installation replaced.
- Follow the mod author’s file instructions exactly. If the release is a manual installation, copy only the named files to the named subfolders. If it requires a manager, install and run that manager in Desktop Mode as instructed. Do not assume that the texture-mod guide’s manager handles the survival mod.
- Check for an executable or launcher dependency. If the release includes a Windows-only tool, note that it may need its own Proton prefix and manual configuration. This is a possibility, not a confirmed requirement, so do not create a prefix unless the mod’s documentation calls for one.
- Return to Gaming Mode and launch the base game. Start the game through its normal Steam entry rather than adding random executables as non-Steam games. If the mod uses a separate launcher, use the launch method specified by the author.
- Test the survival entry before changing settings. Verify that the main menu loads, the mod’s mode is visible, and a new run can begin. Record the exact point of failure if it cannot.
Force Proton only when the normal launch fails
If the game already runs natively or through its default compatibility choice, leave that setting alone for the first mod test. If Steam does not launch the Windows build correctly, open the game’s Properties, select Compatibility, enable the option to force a specific Steam Play compatibility tool, and try the latest Proton version available on the Deck. Restart the game after each change so the result is attributable to one setting.
Lowering graphics settings is an appropriate second step when the game launches but stutters or crashes under load, consistent with Bethesda’s general Steam Deck guidance. It cannot compensate for a missing loader or incompatible mod files. If the mod author specifies a Proton release, use that instruction in preference to a general recommendation.
How to tell whether it actually works
A title reaching the main menu is not enough. A survival mod can appear installed while its scripts fail when a match starts. Use a short, repeatable test:

- Start the game from a cold launch after a full exit, not from a suspended session.
- Confirm that the survival option or mod indicator appears where the author says it should.
- Begin a solo run and wait through several enemy waves. The manual’s definition involves progressively stronger ghosts and an eventual knockout condition, so test both the wave progression and the loss state.
- Use every control needed for movement, aiming, firing, equipment, pause, and restarting. A working keyboard-and-mouse menu does not prove that the Deck controls are mapped correctly.
- Watch for frame-time spikes, input delay, audio dropouts, or crashes when new waves appear. Note whether the issue is repeatable at the same event.
- Exit normally and reload the save or restart the mode. This checks whether the mod leaves the game in a state that breaks the next launch.
Keep the test offline unless the mod author explicitly requires an online service. The mod is described as single-player, but the available announcement does not independently document offline behavior.

The base game will not launch
Remove the mod files or restore the clean backup, then launch the unmodified game. If the clean copy also fails, use Steam’s file-verification function and try the latest Proton version through Properties > Compatibility. A failure that remains after a clean restore is a base-game or Proton problem, not evidence that the survival scripts are broken.

The game launches but the survival mode is missing
Check the edition and install location first. The Remastered Linux path documented by the Steam Community guide is not proof that files for the original PC release belong there. Re-read the mod author’s required folder names and manager steps, then reinstall from the clean backup. Do not scatter copies across multiple Steam library folders; that can make it unclear which installation Steam is starting.
A launcher or manager opens on a desktop but not on Deck
A Windows-only helper may need a separate Proton prefix or a documented launch command. Since no such requirement is established for this mod, look for an author-provided Deck or Linux procedure before attempting manual prefix work. If none exists, the helper—not necessarily the game itself—may be the compatibility boundary.
The mode starts, then crashes during waves
First lower graphics settings and retest from a fresh launch. If the crash occurs at the same wave every time, disable other mods, restore clean files, and reinstall only the survival mod. A repeatable wave-triggered crash points toward a script, asset, or loader mismatch; changing unrelated Deck settings is unlikely to repair that.
Controls feel wrong even though the game runs
Check the active Steam Input layout and test the game’s own control settings. Record which action is missing rather than judging the entire mod incompatible. The available sources contain no author-tested control profile, so a player may need to create a custom layout for an otherwise functional installation.

Performance degrades over a long run
Repeat the test with lower graphics settings and compare frame pacing rather than average frame rate alone. The mod has no published Deck benchmark in the available material, so one successful short match cannot establish stable performance for extended sessions.
What level of confidence should you have?
The evidence supports a practical “possible” rating, not a confirmed compatibility claim. The strongest facts are that the game has a Steam PC release, Steam Deck can run Windows games through Proton, and a Remastered Linux mod guide shows that game files can be managed from SteamOS. The missing facts are specific to the survival mod: supported edition, loader, package structure, Proton behavior, and tested controls.
If you already own the matching Ghostbusters edition and are comfortable restoring files, the reversible Desktop Mode procedure makes a trial reasonable. If you need guaranteed plug-and-play behavior, wait for the mod author or a tester to publish explicit Steam Deck results. Until then, describe any successful installation as a personal result rather than universal support.
