Short answer: not through an identified official native release. The 1997 original Grand Theft Auto is not listed as a current PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch game. Rockstar’s modern Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition contains Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City and San Andreas—not the first top-down game. Rockstar’s launcher support catalog also lists the original Grand Theft Auto as unsupported.
Which game is “GTA 1”?
“GTA 1” normally means the first Grand Theft Auto, released in 1997. It is a top-down action game and is separate from Grand Theft Auto III, the 2001 game that established the series’ later fully 3D format. A store listing for GTA III, Vice City or San Andreas is therefore not a listing for the 1997 original, even though all four games share the Grand Theft Auto name.

The original was released for MS-DOS and Windows, then ported to the first PlayStation and Game Boy Color. Those releases belong to older hardware generations. A PlayStation disc, Windows installer or Game Boy Color cartridge should be treated as legacy software, not as evidence that the game runs directly on current consoles.

Rockstar’s announcement for the Definitive Edition names PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC as supported platforms for that collection. Its listed contents are GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. Neither the announcement nor the product description identifies the 1997 game as part of the package.

Can you play GTA 1 on PS5?
There is no identified official native PS5 release of the 1997 Grand Theft Auto. The PlayStation 5 can run software made available for it through Sony’s current distribution and compatibility programs, but an original PlayStation disc is not automatically converted into a PS5 license. Owning the disc from the original PlayStation era does not establish that the disc can be inserted into a PS5 and played.
If a PS5 store page advertises “The Trilogy,” check the individual games in the product description. The collection’s three titles are GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. Buying that collection gives access to those games, not to the first top-down GTA.
What a PS1 copy can and cannot do
- It can be a legitimate physical copy for collecting, historical reference or preservation.
- It is software designed for the original PlayStation generation.
- It is not an identified native PS5 edition.
- Its existence does not create a digital entitlement in a modern PlayStation store.
Is the first Grand Theft Auto backwards compatible on Xbox Series X|S?
No official Xbox Series X|S version of the 1997 game has been identified. The Xbox Series consoles’ backward-compatibility catalog is title-specific; an old release does not become compatible merely because it was published for a previous console. The original GTA was not an Xbox game in its documented release history, so an original PlayStation copy cannot be used as an Xbox license or disc.
The Xbox version of the modern Definitive Edition is a different product. It includes GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It does not add the 1997 game as a bonus or unlockable.

Is GTA 1997 on Nintendo Switch?
The Nintendo Switch version of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition contains GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. The first Grand Theft Auto is not listed among those contents, and no separate official Switch release is identified.
This distinction matters because “GTA on Switch” can refer to the trilogy rather than the original. Before purchasing, read the product’s game list instead of relying on a store search result, thumbnail or series branding. If the list starts with GTA III and then names Vice City and San Andreas, it is not the 1997 title.
Does the Definitive Edition include the original top-down GTA?
No. The Definitive Edition is a three-game collection of:

The collection’s “Definitive” name describes those remastered releases; it does not mean the entire series is included. GTA (1997), its expansion-era material and its later handheld and computer versions are not identified as part of the package. Treat the three games as the complete contents unless a future product description explicitly says otherwise.

What Rockstar’s PC support information means
Rockstar Games Customer Support has a list titled “PC titles not currently supported via the Rockstar Games Launcher.” That list includes the original Grand Theft Auto. The published wording is: “PC titles not currently supported via the Rockstar Games Launcher: … Grand Theft Auto …”
This is a statement about the current launcher, not a declaration that every historical PC copy has ceased to exist. It means you should not expect the launcher to install, authenticate or maintain the 1997 game as a currently supported launcher title. It also does not turn a PC copy into a console version.
A separate Rockstar support article about “Grand Theft Auto (The Original)” discusses the former GTA Classics Steam pack and gives a Windows installation path: C:Program FilesSteamsteamappscommongrand theft auto. That path is Windows documentation for a Steam installation. It is not evidence of a PS5, Xbox Series or Switch port, and it should not be read as a current purchase guarantee for the old pack.

| Approach | Exact 1997 game? | Hardware needed | Official current-console support | Setup and availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy the modern Definitive Edition | No | PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch or a supported PC | Yes, for GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas | Normal modern-console purchase and installation; does not solve the GTA (1997) question |
| Use an original PlayStation disc | Yes, if the disc is the original game | Original PlayStation-era hardware or a lawful compatible preservation setup | No identified native PS5, Xbox Series or Switch support | Disc condition, hardware and regional details affect usability |
| Use a historical Windows release | Yes, if the copy is the original game | A compatible Windows computer and the software license or media | No; it is a PC route | Rockstar’s launcher currently lists the title as unsupported; older distribution arrangements may no longer be available |
| Use emulation or other preservation software | Potentially, depending on the legally obtained game image | Compatible hardware, emulator and a lawful copy | Not an official native console release | Configuration, performance, controller mapping and local law vary |
The table separates two questions that are often conflated: whether a method can run the exact 1997 software, and whether Rockstar officially supports that method on a current console. A method can preserve the original game without being a current-generation release.

How to verify a listing before buying
- Read the title year and game list. Look for “Grand Theft Auto” with the 1997 identity, not only a series logo or the word “trilogy.”
- Check the included games. If the listing names GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas, it is the Definitive Edition and does not include GTA (1997).
- Confirm the platform. A Windows, MS-DOS, PlayStation or Game Boy Color listing is not automatically a PS5, Xbox Series or Switch listing.
- Check the publisher’s compatibility statement. For PC, Rockstar’s launcher support list currently marks the original game unsupported.
- Separate ownership from compatibility. An original disc or cartridge can be authentic and collectible while still requiring legacy hardware or a preservation setup.
Legal and technical cautions for legacy copies
Preserving an old game raises questions that a modern digital purchase usually avoids. You need to distinguish the game’s copyright license, the right to make or use a backup, the legality of downloading a game image, and the rules in your country. Those rules differ by jurisdiction and by the source of the software. Owning a physical copy does not automatically make every download or distribution method lawful.
Technical compatibility is equally separate from legality. Original media may require hardware from the same generation, a drive that can read the disc or cartridge, and a display connection that the old hardware supports. A preservation setup may involve an emulator, a modern computer or another compatible device, but configuration quality and controller behavior are not guaranteed by Rockstar’s console product listings.
Do not buy an unverified listing on the assumption that “backward compatible” means “any Grand Theft Auto.” Compatibility lists apply to specific games and editions. Ask the seller for the exact title, platform, region and included media, particularly when a listing uses only a generic “GTA collection” description.

You want the original 1997 game on its original hardware
Look for an authentic PlayStation, Windows or Game Boy Color release and the hardware appropriate to that release. A PlayStation disc can make sense as a retro collectible or preservation purchase, but budget for legacy-hardware requirements and do not expect plug-and-play PS5 support.

You want a Grand Theft Auto game on a current console
The official current-console option documented here is the Definitive Edition. It provides GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Switch. Choose it for those three games, not as a substitute for the 1997 original.
You want to play on a Windows PC
First identify the exact edition and its source. Rockstar’s support documentation references a former GTA Classics Steam installation and lists the original game as unsupported by the Rockstar Games Launcher. That combination means you should verify that your copy is legitimately available and that your intended Windows setup can run it before paying for hardware or software.
You are collecting rather than playing
A boxed copy, disc or cartridge may be worthwhile for its historical value. Record the platform, region, condition and included manuals or packaging. Treat playability on modern consoles as a separate question from authenticity and collectibility.

The first Grand Theft Auto remains a legacy title. There is no identified official native release for PS5, Xbox Series X|S or Nintendo Switch, and Rockstar’s current launcher catalog marks the original PC game as unsupported. The modern Definitive Edition is available on those consoles but contains only GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas. To play the exact 1997 game, you need an appropriate historical PC or console release and a lawful preservation method; an original PS1 copy alone is not a modern-console solution.
