Can you play Stage Fright solo or with online friends? What Ghost Town Games has confirmed

If you mean the upcoming Stage Fright from Ghost Town Games, online play with a friend is announced: it is designed as a two-player co-op adventure that can be played locally or online. A solo campaign or solo mode has not been confirmed in the available announcements, so it is too early to say that you can play the full game alone.

Online co-op is intended to imitate the local experience with a split-screen view, letting each player see what the other is doing. Crossplay, the exact invitation process, and whether players need separate copies or systems have not been announced.

First, make sure you mean the right Stage Fright

The answer below concerns Ghost Town Games’ upcoming co-op adventure, not the older Stage Fright by Broan Games. Steam lists those as separate games. Ghost Town Games’ announcement describes its title as a two-player mystery adventure built around escape-room-like puzzles, obstacles and physical objects that players must interpret together. You can identify the upcoming game through the developer’s Steam Community announcement: Ghost Town Games’ Stage Fright announcement.

This distinction matters because the same title has been used for a released single-player rhythm-horror game. Information about that older game’s solo format does not establish anything about Ghost Town Games’ project.

Can you play Ghost Town Games’ Stage Fright solo?

Solo play is not announced or confirmed by the sources currently available. The developer describes Stage Fright as a “two-player co-op” adventure, and the public material explains how two people can play together locally or online. It does not explicitly promise a solo campaign, a single-player mode, an AI partner or a way to complete the story alone.

That is different from saying solo play is impossible. The game is still unreleased, and the cited announcements do not settle whether a lone player will be supported. Until Ghost Town Games publishes a feature list or launch documentation that addresses solo play, the accurate answer is: the two-player experience is confirmed; solo play remains unconfirmed.

Can you play with an online friend?

Yes. Online two-player co-op is part of the announced design. The official Steam Community post says the adventure can be played “locally or online,” while PC Gamer’s October 9, 2026 interview with the developers also reports both local and online play. The online mode is not described as a separate competitive mode; it is the same cooperative premise in which two players work through the mystery together.

Online play is planned as split-screen. Co-director Oliver De-Vine explained:

“Even though our game is both local and online, we are trying to make the experience of online as similar to the local experience as possible. So the game is splitscreen online as well, because it does depend on being able to see what the other player is doing and communicate about what they’re seeing in the environment.”

That design means an online partner should be visible on your screen rather than hidden from view as in a conventional shared-world game. You are expected to watch each other’s actions and discuss clues, objects and routes while solving problems.

The two announced ways to play

Play option What is announced How the experience is described Details not yet stated
Local co-op Two players Both players are physically together and cooperate in the same adventure. Required controllers, local hardware arrangement and whether one or two copies are needed are not stated in the cited sources (c001, c002).
Online co-op Two players Players join remotely, with split-screen retained so each can see the other’s actions. Crossplay, invitations, account requirements, separate-copy requirements and voice-chat support are not stated in the cited sources (c001, c002).

The practical difference is where the second player is located, not the number of players: the announced format is two-player co-op in either case. The developers have not announced a larger party size.

What the two-player design means in practice

The “two-player” description is more specific than simply saying the game has multiplayer. It indicates that the central adventure is designed around a pair, with both participants contributing to progress. Nothing in the announcements indicates four-player support, drop-in public matchmaking or a competitive mode. If you are arranging a session for three or more friends, do not assume the game will rotate players or support a larger group.

It also does not tell you how the game handles an absent partner. There is no confirmed AI substitute, guest slot, pause-and-resume rule or way to hand one character to a second person later. Those details can affect whether a pair can finish a long mystery in one sitting, but Ghost Town Games has not published them yet.

Why split-screen online matters in this game

The developers present communication as a core mechanic rather than an optional social extra. Puzzles use what each person can see and do, and physical objects are intended to prompt players to compare observations. One player may notice an environmental detail while the other is interacting with a different object, so seeing both perspectives helps the pair coordinate.

Phil Duncan, a games designer on the project, described the target feeling this way:

“The ideal situation is that you’re sat next to someone and you’re nudging them and you point at the same thing. So it’s as close as we can get to that online.”

For an online session, a clear way to communicate will therefore be useful. The available statements support recommending a voice or text method as practical preparation, but they do not establish that a microphone is mandatory or that the game includes built-in voice chat. Do not treat split-screen as proof of any particular headset, console accessory or chat feature.

What has not been confirmed about online setup

Many normal co-op details are still open. The announcements confirm the mode, but not the procedure a player will follow after launch. In particular, the cited material does not say:

  • whether an online friend joins through a lobby, an invitation, a platform friends list or an in-game code;
  • whether both players must own the game;
  • whether each player needs a separate device;
  • whether Steam and Nintendo Switch players can play together;
  • whether crossplay will work between different console or PC platforms;
  • whether online play requires a subscription or account beyond the platform’s normal requirements;
  • whether the game provides built-in voice chat, text chat or another communication tool; or
  • whether a remote-play feature can substitute for a second copy or device.

These are not small wording differences: they determine the cost and technical steps for a real session. Until Ghost Town Games gives those details, avoid assuming that a friend on another platform can join or that one purchase covers both participants.

Cost and equipment questions remain open

No price, edition structure or accessory requirement is included in the announcements. There is no confirmed physical edition, deluxe package, bundled controller or mandatory headset to budget for. A controller or microphone may be convenient depending on the platform and how you communicate, but presenting one as required would go beyond what has been documented.

The same caution applies to ownership. A local pair might ultimately share a system, while an online pair might need two systems and two licenses, but the developers have not said which arrangement the finished game will require. Check the final store listing and platform policies rather than buying an extra copy or subscription based only on assumptions about standard co-op games.

A sensible plan for playing with a friend

You cannot follow an official invitation tutorial yet, because no such procedure is included in the cited announcements. You can, however, prepare without turning guesses into requirements:

  1. Identify the game. Check that the store page names Ghost Town Games and the upcoming co-op adventure, not Broan Games’ older single-player title.
  2. Choose a platform you both expect to use. PC Gamer lists Steam and Nintendo Switch among the planned platforms. That is a platform listing, not confirmation that every version launches simultaneously or supports crossplay.
  3. Decide between local and online play. Local co-op is intended for two people in the same place; online co-op is intended for two remote players and keeps the split-screen view.
  4. Arrange a communication method. Because the puzzles depend on discussing what each player sees, plan a clear voice or text channel. The developers have not said which communication features are built into the game.
  5. Wait for the official setup instructions. Confirm lobby, invitation, account, ownership and cross-platform rules from Ghost Town Games or the relevant store page when those details are published.

This approach lets you plan the kind of session the developers describe without promising a feature that has not been documented.

Platforms and release timing

Stage Fright is not currently confirmed as an available game in the material cited here. Ghost Town Games’ September 9, 2026 Steam Community announcement gives a Spring 2027 release window. A PC Gamer interview published October 9, 2026 describes the timing as Early 2027 and lists Steam and Nintendo Switch.

Those descriptions are planned windows, not a fixed launch date. “Spring” and “early” cover a period rather than a specific day, and release plans can change. The sources do not provide a final date, final edition list or confirmed cross-platform multiplayer policy.

How to interpret the answer if you want to play alone

If your purchase decision depends on single-player support, do not assume that the two-player label guarantees a solo route. Ask three separate questions when an updated official page appears:

  • Does the campaign have a solo mode?
  • If so, does it remove, replace or automate the second player?
  • Can the entire story and puzzle sequence be completed alone, or are some activities restricted to two players?

None of those questions is answered by the current announcements. The safest pre-release expectation is that the central experience is built for two people, while solo completion remains an open question.

Bottom line on local, online and solo play

For the upcoming Ghost Town Games title, two-player co-op is the confirmed format. You can play with a friend beside you locally or with a friend online, and online co-op is planned with split-screen so both players can see the other’s actions. Solo play has not been announced, so it should be treated as unconfirmed rather than promised or ruled out. Crossplay and the exact online setup are also unresolved. The current release planning points to Spring 2027 in the developer announcement and Early 2027 in PC Gamer’s October 2026 report, with Steam and Nintendo Switch listed as planned platforms.
