No—not currently. Squadron 42 is still in development, is not available to download, and RSI has not confirmed VR support for its single-player campaign. Star Citizen’s experimental VR notes apply to that separate product and do not establish that a Squadron 42 headset mode, supported runtime, or setup procedure exists.
The current answer: Squadron 42 has no confirmed VR mode
RSI’s support article, updated February 4, 2026, states: “Squadron 42 is currently in development and is not available for download.” You can read the statement in the official RSI download support article.

That availability issue comes before compatibility. Because the campaign is not publicly downloadable, there is no released build in which players can enable VR, test a headset, select a motion-control mode, or follow an official installation guide. RSI has also not published a Squadron 42 VR compatibility list, headset recommendation, runtime requirement, or campaign-specific performance specification.
Therefore, the accurate answer to “Can you play Squadron 42 in VR?” is no, not at this time. That is different from saying VR will never be supported. It means only that RSI has not made the campaign available or confirmed a supported VR implementation in the official material currently available.

Why Star Citizen’s experimental VR notes do not confirm Squadron 42 support
Confusion usually comes from patch information for Star Citizen. RSI’s Alpha 4.10.2 patch notes describe experimental VR updates, including VR zoom for interaction zoom, ship precision targeting, and first-person-shooter weapon scopes.
Those notes are scoped to Star Citizen. They do not say that the Squadron 42 campaign supports VR, and they do not provide a Squadron 42 launch option or setup sequence. Shared technology, developers, or game-universe connections are not proof that a feature is present in both products.
| Question | What the official information establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Which product is covered by the VR patch notes? | Star Citizen Alpha 4.10.2, with experimental VR interactions. | That Squadron 42 has the same feature. |
| Is Squadron 42 downloadable? | No. RSI says it remains in development and is not available for download. | That players can test campaign VR in a public build. |
| Is there a supported Squadron 42 headset list? | No official list is identified in the available RSI material. | That any particular headset or runtime is guaranteed to work. |
| Is there a campaign setup guide? | No confirmed procedure is published. | That Star Citizen VR instructions can be transferred to Squadron 42. |
RSI’s published PC requirements are not VR requirements
RSI publishes baseline PC requirements for its games, including Squadron 42. The official game and launcher requirements page lists the following minimum platform information:

| Component | Published baseline | How to interpret it for VR |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 or Windows 11 | These are the supported Windows versions listed by RSI; they are not a guarantee that a headset runtime will work. |
| Graphics card | DirectX 11.1-compatible graphics card with 4 GB of graphics memory | This is a general game baseline, not a measured VR target. VR often imposes additional rendering and frame-time demands, but RSI has not published a Squadron 42 VR threshold. |
| Processor | Quad-core CPU supporting AVX, AVX2, and FMA3 | The instruction-set requirements apply to the game baseline. No campaign-specific VR CPU requirement is stated. |
| System memory | 16 GB or more RAM | This is the listed system-memory requirement, not a recommendation for a particular headset or refresh rate. |
| Storage | 150 GB or larger SSD | The capacity and SSD guidance describe the game installation baseline. They do not indicate that a VR build is available. |
| Other operating systems | Linux and macOS are not currently supported | Changing operating systems would not create Squadron 42 VR support. |
Meeting every row in this table would only put a Windows PC within RSI’s published general baseline. It would not make an unreleased campaign downloadable, add a VR menu, or validate a headset/runtime combination. Do not treat the 4 GB graphics-memory figure, 16 GB RAM figure, or 150 GB SSD figure as recommended VR performance targets; RSI presents them as general requirements and does not attach VR testing conditions to them.
Why there is no Squadron 42 VR setup procedure to follow
The campaign is not available to install
A normal VR setup requires a released application, a supported operating system, a headset connection, a runtime, and in-game settings that initialize stereoscopic rendering and tracking. Squadron 42 currently fails the first requirement: RSI says the game is not available for download. Any guide that gives you a Squadron 42 launcher switch or a campaign VR menu today would be presenting an unverified workaround as official support.
No headset or runtime has been certified for the campaign
RSI has not published a Squadron 42 compatibility list in the cited material. That means there is no official basis for naming a headset model, tracking system, OpenXR or other runtime configuration, controller mapping, resolution setting, or refresh-rate target as supported. A headset that functions with Star Citizen’s experimental VR features cannot automatically be assumed to function with Squadron 42.

Experimental Star Citizen controls are not a transferable checklist
The Star Citizen notes mention specific experimental interactions: zooming while interacting, precision targeting from ships, and weapon-scope use in first-person gameplay. They do not describe campaign missions, Squadron 42 menus, cinematic presentation, save-game behavior, or single-player input mapping. Copying those controls into a hypothetical Squadron 42 setup would be speculation rather than a documented procedure.
If an attached headset is causing RSI software problems
There is one practical headset-related instruction from RSI, but it is a troubleshooting measure—not a method for enabling Squadron 42 VR. RSI’s unsupported applications, peripherals and overlays article warns that VR or AR systems connected while not in use can cause conflicts with RSI software.
If you are troubleshooting an RSI launcher or another supported RSI application while a headset is connected, use this limited sequence:

- Close the RSI application and any associated launcher windows.
- Detach the VR or AR device from the computer when you are not actively using it.
- Restart the computer so the previously loaded peripheral software and device state are cleared.
- Start the RSI application again without the headset attached and test whether the original problem remains.
- If the application now works, reconnect the peripheral only when you have a documented, supported VR feature to test.
This sequence can help isolate a peripheral conflict. It does not download Squadron 42, add campaign VR, or prove that a headset is compatible with the future game.

When RSI eventually announces campaign availability or VR support, verify each item separately rather than relying on forum claims or Star Citizen patch notes.
- Confirm that the campaign is downloadable. Start with RSI’s download support page. A change from “not available for download” would establish availability, but it would not by itself establish VR.
- Find an announcement that names Squadron 42. Look for release notes or an official statement that explicitly identifies the campaign, not only Star Citizen. Product names and scopes matter.
- Check for a supported-device list. A useful compatibility notice should identify headset families, tracking requirements, supported runtime versions, controller input, and any regional or edition limitations. Without those details, compatibility remains unconfirmed.
- Read the campaign’s own requirements. Compare the published GPU, CPU, RAM, storage, operating-system, resolution, and refresh-rate requirements with your PC. Do not substitute the general game baseline for a future VR specification.
- Follow the official setup path exactly. Use only the launcher options, in-game menus, and runtime instructions RSI documents for Squadron 42. Do not assume that an experimental Star Citizen command or configuration file applies.
- Check the Development Hub and patch notes for scope. RSI’s Development Hub can show project updates, while patch notes identify which product and build a feature belongs to. A mention of “VR” is not enough unless Squadron 42 is named.
A genuine announcement should answer three practical questions: can the campaign be installed, which hardware and runtime are supported, and what exact steps enable the feature? Until all three are answered by RSI, a third-party setup guide cannot turn an unconfirmed feature into a supported one.

Common assumptions that lead to bad advice
“The games share an engine, so the same headset must work.”
Shared technology does not establish identical features, input systems, performance, or release status. The official VR notes identify Star Citizen, not Squadron 42. Treating engine similarity as certification can lead to wasted purchases and difficult troubleshooting.
“The published PC requirements are enough for VR.”
The requirements page gives a general DirectX 11.1 GPU baseline, a quad-core AVX/AVX2/FMA3 processor, at least 16 GB of RAM, and a 150 GB SSD on Windows 10 or 11. It does not measure headset frame times, stereoscopic resolution, motion reprojection, or a particular refresh rate. Those VR variables require campaign-specific testing or specifications that have not been published.
“Connecting a headset now will reveal whether the campaign supports it.”
There is no downloadable campaign build to test. Moreover, RSI warns that an unused VR/AR peripheral can conflict with its software. Connecting hardware in the hope of discovering hidden support can create a troubleshooting problem without producing compatibility evidence.
“A community workaround is equivalent to official support.”
Unofficial launch arguments, injectors, compatibility layers, or configuration edits may change how a program starts, but they do not establish that RSI supports the result. They can also complicate diagnosis when official support eventually arrives. For a game that is not yet downloadable, claims of a working Squadron 42 VR setup should be treated as unverified.
What you should do now
- Do not buy a headset specifically for Squadron 42 on the assumption that campaign VR is available.
- Use RSI’s published PC requirements only as a general Windows game baseline, not as a VR performance promise.
- Keep Star Citizen experimental VR information separate from Squadron 42 campaign compatibility.
- If an RSI application behaves oddly with a connected headset, detach the VR/AR device, restart, and retest as RSI advises.
- Wait for an RSI announcement that explicitly covers Squadron 42, identifies supported hardware and runtime software, and provides campaign setup instructions.
Until those conditions are met, there is no supported Squadron 42 VR configuration to install or tune. The most reliable answer remains that the campaign is still in development and VR support has not been confirmed.
