Why SpongeBob and Patrick do not mean two-player co-op
The publisher’s description says to “Combine SpongeBob and Patrick’s unique platforming skills.” That is a character-switching mechanic, not simultaneous multiplayer.
In a single-player game, two protagonists can serve several design purposes:
- You may switch control between SpongeBob and Patrick as the situation requires.
- Each character can contribute a different movement or traversal ability.
- Puzzles and platforming can be built around changing characters during one person’s play session.
- The story can feature both heroes without giving another person control of one of them.
That distinction matters when reading store pages. A listing can describe two playable characters while still specifying one player. The player-count field determines whether another person can join; the number of heroes in the story does not.

If you buy the game for yourself, expect to use SpongeBob and Patrick as complementary tools during one adventure. The exact button layout can vary by platform and may be explained in the game’s controls menu, but the structure described by the official materials is clear.

- Continue through the story and boss encounters. The ghostly adventure includes locations such as Neptune’s Palace and Mount Bikini.
At no point does this process create a second local profile or hand control of Patrick to another person. If a friend takes the controller, that is simply a handoff between turns, not a multiplayer mode.
Switch display modes do not change the player count
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop and handheld modes for the Switch version. These options describe where the console can display the game, not how many people can play it.
- TV mode: You can play on a television, but the listing still specifies one local player.
- Tabletop mode: Setting the Switch on its stand does not add a second player slot.
- Handheld mode: Portable play remains a one-player experience.
Switch 2 compatibility is listed by Nintendo in both the US and Australian materials. Compatibility with the newer console changes the hardware on which you can run the game; it does not change the local multiplayer specification.

These regional dates should not be merged into one universal date. If you are checking a store in another country, use that storefront’s date and availability information.
Can a second controller create a workaround?
No supported workaround is identified. The official Nintendo and Xbox capability fields do not provide a local co-op mode, and they do not describe a controller-based way to add another player.
Buying an extra Joy-Con, gamepad or Xbox controller therefore does not solve the couch-multiplayer requirement. A second controller may be useful for other games on the same console, but there is no stated setting in Titans of the Tide that assigns one controller to SpongeBob and another to Patrick.

What kind of game you are actually getting
Titans of the Tide is presented as a solo platform adventure set in a ghostly story involving the Flying Dutchman and King Neptune. Its appeal is exploration, character-based platforming and boss encounters rather than cooperative play.
The official description highlights:
- A supernatural storyline involving the Flying Dutchman and King Neptune.
- Switchable SpongeBob and Patrick gameplay.
- Patrick’s grappling and burrowing skills.
- Platforming locations including Neptune’s Palace and Mount Bikini.
- Boss encounters that are approached by one player.
If you enjoy platform adventures and are happy to alternate between characters yourself, the one-player format fits that design. If your main reason for buying is to play beside another person on one console, the advertised feature set does not meet that requirement.

Buy it for a solo session
Choose the game if you want to control SpongeBob and Patrick yourself, explore the story, use their different abilities and take on the bosses alone. The Switch version supports several display configurations, and the game is also listed for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Look for a different game if two people must play together
When local multiplayer is essential, check the store page for an explicit label such as “local co-op,” “multiplayer,” or a player count greater than one before purchasing. Do not infer couch co-op from artwork showing multiple characters or from a description that says you can switch between heroes.

Use a handoff only as a social option
Two people can still share the experience informally by taking turns with one controller, watching the other person play or passing the controller after a level. That is a human-made way to share a single-player game, not a feature that lets both people act at once.
Common mistaken assumptions
“There are two heroes, so each person gets one.”
The listings separate character availability from player count. SpongeBob and Patrick are both part of one player’s toolkit.
“Local 1 only applies to handheld mode.”
Nintendo Australia’s “Local 1” label is the local-player specification for the game. Nintendo’s US listing likewise says “Single system (1)” while listing TV, tabletop and handheld modes.
“Switch 2 support might add co-op.”
Switch 2 compatibility identifies supported hardware. It does not announce an additional player mode.
“A second controller should unlock a hidden mode.”
No official listing identifies such a mode or workaround. Treat the game as single-player unless a future, official update explicitly changes the published capabilities.
Bottom line for prospective players
SpongeBob SquarePants: Titans of the Tide cannot currently be played as local multiplayer. Nintendo specifies one player on one system, and Xbox specifies single player. SpongeBob and Patrick are switchable characters controlled by that one player, while Switch display modes and Switch 2 compatibility do not increase the count. Buy it as a solo platform adventure—or choose a title whose official listing explicitly supports local multiplayer if playing together is the priority.
