Yes. The version to buy for a current system is Resident Evil HD Remaster, Capcom’s high-definition revision of the 2002 Nintendo GameCube remake. It is available on Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, with the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One editions potentially playable on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles through regional backward-compatibility support. The 1996 PlayStation original and the 2002 remake are different releases, so check the edition name before paying.
What people mean by “Resident Evil 1”
The title has three important versions. The first is Resident Evil for PlayStation, released in 1996. The second is a ground-up remake for Nintendo GameCube in 2002. The third is Resident Evil HD Remaster, released for modern platforms in 2014 and 2015. The HD release is not a remaster of the 1996 graphics; it is a remaster of the 2002 remake.

| Release | What it is | Why you might choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Resident Evil (1996) | The original PlayStation game | You want the historical version, original presentation and collector experience |
| Resident Evil remake (2002) | A remake rebuilt from the ground up for Nintendo GameCube | You want the remake in its original GameCube form |
| Resident Evil HD Remaster (2014/2015) | A high-definition revision of the 2002 remake | You want the most practical modern purchase with upgraded video, audio and controls |
Capcom’s 2015 release material describes the lineage directly: the series began in 1996, was remade from the ground up in 2002, and then received the HD version. That distinction matters when a store page simply says “Resident Evil.” A listing for the HD Remaster gives you the remake’s mansion, characters and story framework with modern presentation; it does not recreate the original PlayStation edition.

Is Resident Evil HD Remaster the remake?
It is the remastered version of the remake. The 2002 GameCube project rebuilt the 1996 game rather than merely increasing its resolution. It revised the environments, character models, lighting, sound and presentation while retaining the survival-horror structure and fixed-camera style. The later HD release takes that 2002 work and prepares it for high-definition displays and current digital storefronts.
Therefore, “remake” and “HD Remaster” are both accurate descriptions, but they refer to different steps. Calling the HD version a remaster of the 1996 PlayStation game is imprecise. If you are comparing the original and the HD release, you are comparing the 1996 game with the 2002 remake lineage, not two graphics settings for one build.
What the HD Remaster changes
The HD release keeps the remake’s single-player survival-horror design and fixed-camera presentation. Its improvements are focused on image quality, sound and input options rather than turning it into a modern third-person action game.
- Higher-resolution environments and characters: the remake’s backgrounds and models are presented for HD displays.
- 16:9 widescreen support: you can use a widescreen presentation instead of the original 4:3 framing.
- Remastered audio: the release supports 5.1 surround output where your equipment and system configuration provide it.
- Two control schemes: you can select the original-style controls or an alternative analog movement scheme.
- Fixed cameras remain: camera angles are still authored scenes rather than a freely controlled camera behind the character.
Those choices make the HD Remaster easier to use on a television, monitor or handheld while preserving the deliberate camera cuts and exploration that define this version of the game. Players expecting the camera and movement of later entries should know that the remaster does not replace the fixed-camera design.

PC version: requirements and setup
The Windows release is the clearest route if you want a current computer and a digital purchase. Steam lists Windows 10 as the minimum operating system and Windows 10 or Windows 11 as recommended. The minimum memory requirement is 2 GB of RAM, required storage is 20 GB, and DirectX 9.0c is the minimum DirectX version listed.
| PC specification | Steam listing information |
|---|---|
| Operating system minimum | Windows 10 |
| Operating system recommended | Windows 10 or Windows 11 |
| Memory minimum | 2 GB RAM |
| Storage | 20 GB |
| Graphics API minimum | DirectX 9.0c |
| Input | Keyboard and mouse supported; an XInput-compatible controller is recommended by Steam |
Before you install
- Confirm that the store page is for Resident Evil / biohazard HD REMASTER, not another numbered entry or a soundtrack package.
- Check that your Windows installation meets the listed operating-system requirement and that at least 20 GB is free on the target drive.
- Decide whether you will play with keyboard and mouse or a gamepad. If you choose a controller, an XInput-compatible model follows Steam’s recommendation.
- After installation, choose between the original control scheme and the alternative analog scheme offered by the game.
The requirements are modest by current PC standards, but storage and operating-system checks still prevent avoidable installation failures. If a controller is detected inconsistently, confirm that it presents itself as an XInput device before changing in-game settings.
PlayStation: PS4, PS5 and older systems
Capcom documents HD Remaster releases for PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The researched platform record does not identify a native PlayStation 5 SKU. On a PS5, use the local PlayStation Store to search for the PS4 edition and read its compatibility label before purchasing or downloading. Store availability and licensing can differ by country, so a result visible in one region is not proof that the same edition is sold in another.

- Open the PlayStation Store on the PS5 you intend to use.
- Search for the exact title Resident Evil HD Remaster and inspect the platform information.
- Confirm that the product is the PS4 edition and that the store identifies it as playable on your PS5 through backward compatibility.
- Check the edition description and purchase ownership before completing the transaction, especially if several entries share similar artwork.
If the store does not show the PS4 edition as available or compatible in your region, do not assume that a PS5-native version exists. The documented release list names PS4, not PS5.

Xbox: Xbox One, Series X and Series S
Capcom documents Xbox 360 and Xbox One releases. It does not list a native Xbox Series edition in the platform information used here. Owners of Xbox Series X or Series S should therefore verify the Xbox One edition in the Microsoft Store on their console. Look for the store’s current backward-compatibility or playable-on-this-console designation rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “Xbox” label.
How to check on Xbox Series
- Open the Microsoft Store on the Xbox Series console.
- Search for the HD Remaster and open the product page that identifies the Xbox One edition.
- Read the compatibility panel to confirm that the edition runs on your Series X or Series S in your region.
- Check whether the page is selling a digital license, a disc-based Xbox One copy or an add-on, then select the format your console supports.
As with PlayStation, regional storefront rules can change what appears in search results. A backward-compatible Xbox One listing is different from a separately developed Series X|S release.
Nintendo Switch edition
Capcom’s official Switch manual and FAQ identify a Nintendo Switch edition with the same HD Remaster content family. That makes Switch the straightforward console choice if you want this remake on a current Nintendo system without locating a 2002 GameCube disc.
When buying used or from a marketplace, confirm that the item is the Switch edition. A GameCube disc cannot be inserted into a Switch, and a code or cartridge from another platform will not transfer automatically. The Switch version preserves the remake-based content and the HD-era presentation described above.

Original PlayStation and GameCube copies
The 1996 PlayStation release and the 2002 GameCube remake are now mainly collector and used-game purchases. They can be worthwhile when the original hardware experience is the goal, but they require more checking than a current digital edition.
- Disc condition: inspect the disc for scratches, read errors and signs of resurfacing.
- Region: verify that the disc’s regional format matches your console and television setup.
- Hardware: confirm that you own a compatible PlayStation or GameCube, or a replacement system that explicitly supports the disc.
- Edition identity: make sure the listing says 1996 PlayStation original or 2002 GameCube remake, depending on what you want.
- Completeness: collectors may care about the case, manual and original artwork, while players who only want to play should prioritize a tested disc.
Buying an original copy is not a shortcut to the HD features. The 1996 disc does not gain widescreen, remastered audio or the alternate analog scheme, and the GameCube disc is the unremastered 2002 release.

| Experience the 1996 game as released | Used original PlayStation copy | It is the original version rather than the remake lineage |
| Collect the 2002 remake | Used GameCube copy | It is the ground-up remake before the HD revision |
For most readers asking whether they can play “Resident Evil 1” today, the HD Remaster is the least complicated answer. It combines the 2002 remake with high-resolution presentation, widescreen support, remastered sound and two control choices. Choose an original disc only when the historical release, collecting or original hardware is itself the point.

Assuming “remake” means modern free-camera gameplay
The 2002 remake and its HD revision retain fixed-camera survival horror. The remaster improves display and input options, but it does not change the fundamental camera system into a freely controlled third-person view.
Assuming PS5 or Xbox Series has a native edition
Capcom’s documented platform list names PS4 and Xbox One, not PS5 or Xbox Series. Verify the local store’s compatibility notice before treating a previous-generation listing as playable on your console.
Buying a physical copy without checking region
Used PS1 and GameCube games can be region-specific. Confirm the disc format, console compatibility and condition before ordering, particularly when the seller uses a generic “Resident Evil 1” description.

Choosing a PC controller that the game does not recognize cleanly
Keyboard and mouse are supported, and Steam recommends an XInput-compatible controller. If a pad is not detected as expected, check its input mode and connection before assuming that the game lacks controller support.
What Capcom’s sales figure tells you
In a press release dated 24 April 2015, Capcom reported worldwide HD Remastered sales above one million units. That figure confirms substantial uptake for the remastered remake, but it is a historical sales report, not a current player count or a guarantee that every platform store still lists the game.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each reader question
- Can I play the original Resident Evil on PS5? You can play the documented PS4 HD Remaster on PS5 only if your regional PlayStation Store confirms backward compatibility. The original 1996 PlayStation release is a separate product.

- Is Resident Evil HD Remaster the remake? It is the HD remaster of the 2002 remake, which itself rebuilt the 1996 game.
- Does Resident Evil 1 work on PC? Yes. Steam lists the Windows HD Remaster with Windows 10 minimum, 2 GB RAM, 20 GB storage and DirectX 9.0c minimum.
- Is Resident Evil 1 on Xbox Series or Switch? Switch has an edition identified by Capcom. Xbox Series players should verify that the Xbox One edition is marked compatible in their local Microsoft Store.
