The PlayStation Store identifies the supported product as the PS4 Version. Its listed release date is October 26, 2018, and Rockstar Games is the publisher. A PS5 therefore does not need a separate PS5 disc or a separately identified native PS5 download to launch the game.

Using a digital PS4 purchase
- Sign in to the PS5 with the same PlayStation Network account that owns the digital game.
- Open Game Library, select Your Collection, and search for Red Dead Redemption 2.
- Choose the PS4 product, select Download, and allow the installation to finish before launching Story Mode or Red Dead Online.
If the game is not shown, check that the console is using the purchasing account rather than a different family or guest account. A digital entitlement is account-based; changing consoles does not by itself invalidate it.
Using a PS4 disc
A PS4 disc can be used in a standard PS5 with a disc drive. Insert the disc, let the console install the compatible game data, and keep the disc available for the console’s ownership check when you start the game. The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, so a physical copy cannot be converted into a playable license on that model.
What the PlayStation listing warns about
The store page states that, although the game is playable on PS5, some features available on PS4 may be absent. How Red Dead Redemption 2 works on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Series X and Series S run the Xbox One release under Xbox backward compatibility. The Xbox product listing includes Red Dead Redemption 2: Story Mode and Red Dead Online, along with content associated with the Special and Ultimate Editions where that edition is purchased.
Installing a digital Xbox copy
- Sign in to the Xbox console with the Microsoft account that owns the digital game.
- Open My games & apps, then Full library and Owned games.

Installing from an Xbox disc

Do you have to buy Red Dead Redemption 2 again?
No, provided you already own the digital license on the same platform account. Downloading the PS4 product to a PS5 or the Xbox One product to a Series console is a compatibility use of that existing entitlement, not a second purchase.

The newer consoles may provide practical system-level benefits such as faster storage access compared with older hardware, but those benefits are not the same as a publisher-announced graphics overhaul.
