No—not the PS5 console version. A Steam Deck cannot install and execute PS5 software directly. Sony’s Remote Play streams a game from an actual PS5 and requires a network connection. You can play a separate Windows/Steam PC version locally on a Steam Deck, including offline after installation, but only when that particular game, launcher, and copy-protection system support offline use.
The key distinction: PS5 version versus PC version
“PS5 game” can mean two different products. The first is the console build installed on a PlayStation 5. The second is a separate Windows release sold through a PC storefront. They may have the same title, characters, and story, but they are different software builds designed for different operating systems and hardware.

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer can run many Windows PC games, and Valve says, “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton.” That statement applies to a PC executable, not to the PS5 console build. A PS5 game disc, digital PS5 download, or PS5 installation file is not something Steam Deck can simply open.
The practical test is therefore the store listing for the exact title: does it have a Windows/Steam release that is compatible with Steam Deck? If yes, that PC version may be playable locally. If the title exists only as a PS5 console release, the Deck has no supported local installation path for it.

Why Remote Play does not meet the no-PS5, no-internet requirement
Remote Play uses the PS5 as the gaming computer
Remote Play does not convert a Steam Deck into a PS5. The PS5 runs the game, renders each frame, and sends the video and audio stream to the other device. The Steam Deck sends controller input back. Remove the PS5 and there is no console running the PS5 software for the Deck to display.
Sony Interactive Entertainment states on its PS Remote Play information that “A PS4 or PS5 console is required to stream your games to another devices.” The wording is explicit: a console is a prerequisite, not an optional accessory. A DualSense controller, a dock, or a faster storage card cannot replace that console.
Remote Play requires network connectivity
Sony’s published requirement is at least 5 Mbps of internet bandwidth for both upload and download, with at least 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience. Those figures describe a networked streaming service, not an offline mode. The connection must carry the game stream in one direction and your input in the other.

Even when the Deck and PS5 are in the same house, they still need to communicate over a local network. Same-home Wi-Fi can reduce the distance and often lowers latency compared with a remote connection, but it remains streaming. Turning off Wi-Fi, removing the network cable, or taking the Deck somewhere without the PS5 breaks the session.

What Steam Deck can play offline
A separate PC release can run locally
If a game has a Windows/Steam edition, the Deck can download that PC build and execute it on the Deck’s own processor and graphics hardware. Once installed, it does not need a PS5 because the Deck is doing the rendering itself. Proton translates the Windows game’s calls for SteamOS, and the result depends on the specific title, its launcher, and its compatibility settings.
Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ says, “Once a game is installed on disk, you can play while Steam Deck is offline unless the game requires an internet connection.” The exception is important. Installation alone does not guarantee offline play: a launcher may require a sign-in, digital-rights management may perform a live check, or the game may be designed around an online service.
Offline play is title-specific
There is no universal rule that every PlayStation-branded game has a working Deck version, and there is no universal rule that every PC port works without a connection. Check the current Steam listing and the game’s Deck Verified status for the exact release you intend to use. Compatibility can change when a game, Proton, SteamOS, or its launcher is updated.
Comparison: what runs where
| Question | PS5 console build through Remote Play | Separate Windows/Steam build on Steam Deck |
|---|---|---|
| Where is the game executed? | On a PS5 console | On the Steam Deck through SteamOS and, when needed, Proton |
| Is a PS5 required? | Yes; Sony identifies a PS4 or PS5 console as required for streaming | No, provided the title has a compatible PC release |
| Is a network required? | Yes; Sony lists 5 Mbps upload and download as a minimum and 15 Mbps as recommended | Not necessarily after installation; the game, launcher, or DRM can still require an internet connection |
| Which software is installed? | The PS5 console version remains on the PS5 | The PC version is installed on the Deck’s internal drive or a microSD card |
| Does a PS5 purchase automatically provide the PC build? | Not established by the cited Sony and Valve requirements; do not assume cross-buy | You need access to the PC edition separately, according to the store’s licensing terms |
| How predictable is compatibility? | Remote Play compatibility follows the PS5 game, but streaming quality follows the network | Results vary by Proton support, Deck Verified status, launcher behavior, and updates |

- Identify the exact release. In the store listing, confirm that you are buying a Windows/Steam version rather than assuming a PS5 purchase includes it. Look for the game’s current Steam Deck compatibility information.
- Install while online. Download the complete game to the Deck. If it uses a separate launcher, allow that launcher to install and complete its first sign-in while you still have a connection.
- Complete the first launch. Start the game from Steam and pass any account, shader, runtime, or license setup. A game that has never completed its first launch may fail when the Deck is offline.
- Check the launcher and DRM conditions. Read the title’s current requirements for sign-in or online activation. Valve’s offline statement includes an explicit exception for games that require an internet connection.
- Test Steam’s offline mode before departure. Disconnect Wi-Fi deliberately, switch Steam to offline mode, and start the game from the normal library entry. Test the menu, a save, and a complete return to the title screen.
- Keep the installation local. If the game is on a removable card, leave that card inserted and avoid moving or renaming its library folder. A missing drive looks like an uninstalled title.
- Update before you leave. Install the game, SteamOS, Proton version, and launcher updates that you have decided to use. Do not assume you can download a required fix after going offline.
This test is more reliable than an online status icon. A game can appear installed yet still depend on a first-run web check or a launcher session that expires.
How to judge whether a particular title is a good Deck candidate
Start with the PC port
Search for the title’s PC release, not just its PlayStation page. If no Windows/Steam edition exists, a Deck cannot run that console build locally. If a PC edition does exist, read its current Steam Deck status and recent user reports for launchers, controls, and updates. Those details are title-specific and cannot be inferred from the fact that another game in the same series works.
Interpret Deck Verified carefully
Deck Verified status is a useful starting point, not a promise of offline operation or identical PS5 performance. It does not remove a game’s own online requirement, and a title can change behavior after an update. Treat the status as a compatibility signal, then perform the offline test described above.

Remote Play performance is dominated by network delay, bandwidth, and stability because the PS5 is sending a live stream. Native PC play is dominated by the Deck’s hardware, the game’s graphics settings, and Proton behavior. A game may stream smoothly but have no compatible PC port, or have a PC port that works offline but needs settings adjustments to run well.

Accessories: useful, but not substitutes
MicroSD card
A microSD card provides additional local storage for installed PC games. That can make offline travel practical when the internal drive is full. It does not contain a PS5 runtime, does not turn a console build into a PC build, and does not remove an online activation requirement. The card must contain the compatible PC installation you intend to launch.
DualSense controller
A DualSense can improve control comfort for a Remote Play setup or for a compatible PC game. In a Remote Play setup, it remains only an input device: the PS5 and network are still required. In native PC play, controller support depends on the game and its PC input configuration.
Dock and display accessories
A dock can connect the Deck to a larger display and peripherals, but it does not add PS5 compatibility or make Remote Play offline. Valve’s guidance says docking does not improve performance. It is a convenience accessory, not a substitute for processing hardware or connectivity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhich situation applies to you?
You do not own a PS5 and have no internet
Remote Play is ruled out twice: it needs the console and a network. Your workable option is an installed, compatible PC edition that has already passed an offline test. If the game has no PC release, there is no supported way to run its PS5 version on the Deck.
Best Value
You own a PS5 but will have no network
You still cannot use Remote Play during that trip. The Deck and PS5 must communicate, even if they are normally in the same home. Install a PC version locally instead, or play the title directly on the PS5.
You own a PS5 and have a reliable connection
Remote Play becomes an option, subject to Sony’s bandwidth guidance and the quality of your network. The Deck is displaying a stream from the PS5 rather than running the PS5 software. A wired connection for the console or a strong local wireless network can help latency, but no accessory removes the underlying requirements.
The title has both console and PC editions
Choose based on the experience you need. The PC edition is the route to local, potentially offline play; the PS5 edition is available on the Deck only as a streamed session through Remote Play. Verify licensing separately instead of assuming that buying one platform’s edition grants the other.
Recommended Free Tools
Troubleshooting offline PC play
The game is installed but will not start offline
- Reconnect briefly and complete the game’s first launch or launcher sign-in.
- Confirm Steam is in offline mode and that the game is listed as installed on the selected storage device.
- Check whether the title’s launcher or DRM requires a live check; Valve’s offline guidance excludes games with that requirement.
- Run the same offline test again after any game, Proton, SteamOS, or launcher update.
The game starts but controls do not work
- Use the game’s Steam Input profile or choose a controller layout intended for the PC edition.
- If using a DualSense, pair it before launching and check whether the game is reading it as a controller or keyboard input.
- Do not use a Remote Play control setup as proof that the native PC build supports identical input features.
The Deck says the game is missing
- Make sure the microSD card is inserted and mounted before opening Steam.
- Confirm the library location still points to the folder containing the PC installation.
- Do not remove the card or change library locations immediately before going offline; allow Steam to finish any move or verification while connected.
Bottom line
A Steam Deck cannot play the PS5 console version without a PS5, and it cannot use Sony Remote Play without network connectivity. The no-console, no-internet path is a different product: install a compatible PC version locally, complete its first-run and licensing checks online, and verify that it launches in Steam’s offline mode. Storage accessories and controllers can make that setup easier, but they do not change which version is running or remove the requirements imposed by Remote Play and the game’s own DRM.
