Compatibility works in the opposite direction: a PlayStation 5 runs the overwhelming majority of PS4 games, while PS5 game versions require PS5 hardware. If you own a PS4 game, you may be able to obtain its PS5 version through a title-specific upgrade, but that upgraded version is played on a PS5—not on your PS4.
What “PS4 game” and “PS5 game” actually mean
Many cross-generation releases are sold as two separate software editions. The PS4 edition is built to run on PS4; the PS5 edition is built for PS5 and may include higher resolution, faster loading, improved effects, or other features. Owning one edition does not turn the other console into compatible hardware.

When Sony offers an upgrade, it grants access to a PS5 edition (or lets you buy that edition at a reduced price). It does not convert the PS4 console into a PS5 and does not make the PS5 edition launchable on PS4. You must install and play the upgraded version on a PS5.

No. There is no software setting, disc swap, download, or upgrade entitlement that allows a PS4 to execute a PS5 game version. A PS4 can continue running the PS4 edition you purchased, provided that edition is supported and installed, but it cannot run the PS5 build of the same title.

The reverse relationship is the useful one to remember: PS5 backward compatibility covers the “overwhelming majority” of more than 4,000 PS4 games, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current PlayStation Support guidance. That statement describes PS5 playing older PS4 software; it does not establish PS4 compatibility with PS5 software.
How PS4-to-PS5 upgrades work
Upgrade eligibility is decided separately for each game. Depending on the title, the offer may be free, require payment, or have been available only for a limited period. Do not assume that buying a PS4 copy automatically includes a permanent, no-cost PS5 license.
| What you own | Possible result | Conditions to check |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 game disc | An eligible offer can provide a digital PS5 version | PS5 with a disc drive; disc and account from the same country/region; disc remains inserted; offer may cost money or expire |
| Digital PS4 game | An eligible offer can provide a digital PS5 version | Sign in to the purchasing account on PS5, open the game hub, and review the current offer; PlayStation Plus benefit games are excluded unless the listing says otherwise |
| PS4 game with no upgrade | The PS4 edition may still run on PS5 | The title must be on the compatible-games list; some functions can differ and exceptions exist |
| PS5 game version | Runs on PS5 | A PS4 console cannot run this edition |
Upgrading a physical PS4 disc
Hardware and region requirements
A disc-based upgrade requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 disc, so it cannot validate a physical-disc upgrade. Sony also requires the disc to be from the same country or region as the PlayStation account used for the upgrade. Importing a disc from another market can therefore prevent the offer from appearing or being redeemed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInstallation and play steps
- Sign in on the PS5 with the PlayStation account that will own the upgrade.
- Insert the eligible PS4 disc and connect the console to the internet.
- Open the game’s page or hub in PlayStation Store and review the displayed PS5 upgrade offer.
- Accept the offer and complete any required payment, then download the PS5 version.
- Start the PS5 version with the PS4 disc inserted. The disc is the license check, so it must remain in the drive every time you play.
The disc does not become a standalone digital license. If you sell, lend, or lose it, you may no longer be able to launch the upgraded PS5 version.
Upgrading a digital PS4 game
Finding the offer
- On PS5, sign in with the same PlayStation account that bought or redeemed the digital PS4 game.
- Use Search or open PlayStation Store, then select the game’s PS5 game hub.
- Look for an upgrade option and read its price, eligibility language, and any expiry date before confirming.
- Download the PS5 edition after accepting the offer. If both editions are installed, select the PS5 version from the game menu or library rather than assuming the console chose correctly.
Games obtained as a PlayStation Plus benefit generally do not qualify for a PS5 upgrade unless the specific listing explicitly says they do. A game purchased outright and a game claimed through a subscription can therefore have different upgrade rights even when the software title is identical.
Why an upgrade may be free, paid, or unavailable
Publishers set the commercial terms for each cross-generation release. An offer can be free at launch, discounted, sold as a paid upgrade, or withdrawn after a stated period. Some editions, bundles, regions, and subscription entitlements are treated differently. The only reliable answer for a particular game is the current PS5 Store listing or game hub shown for your account and region.

- No offer: You keep using the PS4 edition; if it is compatible, that edition may still run on PS5 through backward compatibility.
What happens to your saves and progress?
Save migration is not guaranteed. Sony’s 2020 PlayStation Blog FAQ states that “the ability to transfer game saves between a PS4 version and a PS5 version of the same game is a developer decision, and will vary title by title for cross-generational games.” A game may support automatic cloud transfer, a manual in-game import, one-way migration, or no transfer at all.

Before deleting the PS4 edition or starting the PS5 version, check the game’s current support instructions. Confirm which account stores the save, whether a PlayStation Plus cloud subscription is required for cloud storage, and whether transferring a save prevents you from continuing in the PS4 edition. These behaviors are title-specific rather than guaranteed by the console upgrade program.
Playing PS4 games on PS5 without upgrading
You do not need a PS5 edition to play every PS4 game on PS5. Sony says the PS5 is backward compatible with the overwhelming majority of the PS4 catalog, which contains more than 4,000 games. A compatible PS4 disc can be used in a PS5 with a disc drive; a digital PS4 purchase appears in the library when you sign in to the purchasing account.
There are exceptions. Sony’s compatibility information marks certain titles “Playable on: PS4 only.” It also warns that some PS4 functions may not be available on PS5 and that some games can show errors or unexpected behavior. Check the individual game before buying add-ons or downloadable content for use on PS5.
Backward compatibility is different from an upgrade. You may be running the original PS4 build on PS5, with its original features and limitations, rather than a separately optimized PS5 release.

- Identify your copy. Is it a physical PS4 disc, a digital PS4 purchase, or a PlayStation Plus benefit?
- Check the exact edition. Deluxe, special, bundle, and regional editions can have different entitlements.
- Check the current PS5 hub. Read whether the upgrade is free, paid, restricted, or no longer available.
- Confirm your console hardware. A physical-disc path needs a PS5 with a disc drive; a PS5 Digital Edition cannot use PS4 discs.
- Verify region matching. For a disc upgrade, the disc’s country/region must match the PlayStation account.
- Plan your save transfer. Find the game developer’s instructions before switching versions.
- Choose the edition deliberately. If both PS4 and PS5 versions are installed on PS5, select the intended version in the game hub or library.
Common problems and fixes
The upgrade option does not appear
Confirm that you are signed in to the purchasing account, that the title actually has an active offer, and that the game is not a PlayStation Plus benefit excluded by the publisher. For a disc, verify that the disc region matches the account and that the disc is inserted in a PS5 with a working drive.

The PS5 version will not start after installation
For a disc entitlement, reinsert the original PS4 disc; the downloaded PS5 files do not replace the disc license. Also verify that you are launching the PS5 version associated with the entitlement, not an unrelated edition or a different regional release.
My PS4 disc works nowhere on my PS5 Digital Edition
This is expected. The Digital Edition has no disc drive and cannot read or authenticate physical PS4 media. You need a digital entitlement or a PS5 model with a disc drive.
My progress is missing
Do not assume that installing the PS5 edition imports the PS4 save. Check the developer’s instructions for that title, then use its supported cloud, USB, or in-game migration process if available. Save behavior varies by game.

The PS4 version behaves differently on PS5
Review Sony’s compatibility notes. Some PS4 functions are unavailable on PS5, and Sony warns that certain games can have errors or unexpected behavior. If the title is labeled “PS4 only,” it is not supported for play on PS5.
What to verify before buying a PS5 for an upgrade
Start with the specific game rather than the console advertisement. Open its current PlayStation Store entry in your region and record the edition, upgrade price, offer end date, and save-transfer policy. If you own a physical copy, choose a PS5 with a disc drive and keep the disc available for every session. If you own only digital games, confirm that your account owns them directly and that none are subscription benefits excluded from the offer.
Also decide whether you need the PS5 edition at all. If the PS4 edition is compatible and its performance meets your needs, you may be able to play it on PS5 without paying for an upgrade. If you specifically want the PS5 edition, treat the upgrade as a separate entitlement whose terms can change by title and region.
The bottom line on PS5 games and PS4
A PS4 cannot play PS5 games. PS5 software requires a PS5 console. Your existing PS4 game may qualify for a free or paid PS5 upgrade, but that offer is title-specific and the resulting version is played on PS5. Physical upgrades require a disc-drive PS5, a matching account and disc region, and the original disc inserted for every play session. Digital upgrades are checked through the PS5 game hub, while PlayStation Plus benefit games are excluded unless expressly included. Save transfers must be verified with the game’s developer, and PS5 backward compatibility applies to most—but not every—PS4 game.
