A Windows PC or Mac can stream a PS5 game with Sony’s PS Remote Play app, and some PlayStation Studios titles have separate native PC versions. A PS4 cannot run a PS5-native game locally; it can only act as a Remote Play endpoint for a PS5 in supported configurations. PlayStation Portal is also a streaming endpoint: ordinary Remote Play requires a PS5, while its separate cloud-streaming mode requires PlayStation Plus Premium and an eligible PS5 title.
The key distinction is native execution versus streaming. Native execution means the device runs its own version of the game. Streaming means the game runs on a PS5 or in the cloud and your device receives video and sends controller input.

The short answer by platform
| Platform | What you can do | What you cannot do | What you need |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows PC or Mac | Run a separately released native PC version, or stream a PS5 copy with PS Remote Play. | Buying the console edition does not automatically grant the PC edition, and saves do not currently transfer between the console and PC versions. | For Remote Play: a PS5, the PS Remote Play app and a compatible controller. A native port requires a separate purchase. |
| PS4 | Use the PS4 as a Remote Play endpoint for a PS5 where the supported configuration allows it. | Run a PS5-native exclusive directly from PS4 hardware, disc or local storage. | A PS5 that supplies the game and a compatible Remote Play setup. |
| PlayStation Portal | Stream compatible games installed on your PS5. Premium members can also cloud-stream eligible PS5 games. | Run games natively on the Portal, connect it to a PS4 console, or currently cloud-stream PS4 and PS3 games. | For Remote Play: a PS5 and broadband. For cloud streaming: PlayStation Plus Premium and an eligible title, with availability varying by region. |
So, if you want to play without purchasing a PS5, the practical route is a native PC release or, for supported titles, Portal cloud streaming with PlayStation Plus Premium. PS Remote Play on a computer, PS4 or Portal does not remove the need for a PS5 because the console is doing the rendering.
What “PS5 exclusive” means in practice
“Exclusive” describes where a particular version is available, not a permanent promise that the game will never appear elsewhere. Sony sometimes releases a separate PC version of a PlayStation Studios game. That PC release is a different product from the PS5 version: owning the console edition does not provide a free PC license, and Sony says saves cannot currently be transferred between the PC and console versions.
#1 Best Overall
- Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
- Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
- Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
- Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
- Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console
A native PC release is therefore the only option in this comparison that makes the computer itself run the game. It does not depend on your PS5 being switched on, and it is not limited by the quality of a connection to your home console. The trade-off is that you must buy the PC version separately and meet its own hardware and software requirements.
Remote Play is fundamentally different. The PS5 launches and runs the game, encodes the picture as a stream, and sends that stream to the receiving device. Your PC, Mac, PS4 or Portal sends button presses back. The receiving device is not emulating PS5 hardware and is not installing a PS5 game locally.
Playing PS5 exclusives on a Windows PC or Mac
Option 1: Buy a native PC version
Check whether the specific game has an official PC release. If it does, purchase that edition rather than assuming your PlayStation purchase carries over. The PC version and PS5 version may have different system requirements, graphics settings, release timing and online-account arrangements. Most importantly for a continuing playthrough, your PS5 save is not currently transferable to the PC version according to Sony’s published guidance.
This route works without a PS5 once the PC version is available. It is the closest match to “playing a PS5 exclusive on PC” because the computer performs the game’s processing instead of receiving a video feed.
Option 2: Stream your PS5 with PS Remote Play
Use this when the game has no PC port, or when you already own the PS5 edition and want to play that installation on a laptop or desktop.
- Prepare the PS5. On the console, open Settings > System > Remote Play and enable Remote Play. If you want to wake the console while it is in Rest Mode, enable the Rest Mode options that keep the PS5 connected to the internet and allow it to be turned on through the network.
- Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app for Windows or macOS, then sign in with the PlayStation Network account used on the PS5.
- Connect a compatible controller to the computer. The app carries the game picture and sound, but it does not turn a keyboard and mouse into a universal substitute for a console controller; game control support depends on the title and setup.
- Choose the PS5 in the app. The console must be powered on or reachable in Rest Mode, signed in and connected to the internet. The app searches for the console and begins the session when it finds it.
- Use the strongest available network path. Sony states that 5 Mbps is the minimum broadband speed for Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. A wired connection to the PS5 and a reliable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection for the computer generally reduce congestion, although actual results depend on latency, interference and other traffic.
Remote Play does not create a second license. You still need the game installed or available on the PS5 and an account entitled to play it. If somebody else is using the console, changing games or signing out, the Remote Play session is affected because the PS5 is the host.

What happens to saves on PC Remote Play?
Because Remote Play is controlling the PS5 version, the session uses the PS5’s installation and save data. This is different from buying a native PC port: you are not creating a separate PC save and do not need a cross-save feature between editions. The save remains on the PlayStation environment that is running the game.

Can a PS4 play PS5 exclusives?
Local installation: no
A PS4 cannot run a game built for PS5 hardware as a local PS4 application. A PS5 disc cannot be used as a PS4 game disc, and downloading a PS5-only digital entitlement does not turn it into a compatible PS4 build. The PS4’s older CPU, graphics hardware and operating environment are not executing the PS5 version.
Remote Play from a PS5: sometimes, as an endpoint
In supported configurations, a PS4 can be part of a Remote Play setup in which the PS5 runs the game and the PS4 receives the stream. The game therefore remains a PS5 session even though you are viewing it on a television connected to the PS4. Availability depends on the consoles’ software, account state, network and Sony’s supported Remote Play behavior at the time you try it.
This arrangement is useful if the PS4 is in another room, but it does not provide the independence of a native PS4 release. The PS5 must own or have access to the game, remain reachable, and supply the processing power for the entire session.
Can PlayStation Portal play PS5 games by itself?
Normal Portal use: Remote Play from a PS5
PlayStation Portal is designed as a dedicated PS5 streaming device. It does not install or execute PS5 games locally. For its ordinary Remote Play mode, pair it with a PS5, select a compatible game installed on that console and play over your network. The PS5 remains the source of the game, save data and rendering.
Portal is not compatible with PS4 consoles for Remote Play. If your only console is a PS4, Portal does not provide a way to stream that PS4 library. Portal also cannot be used as a standalone handheld for PS5 games when it has no supported streaming source.

Cloud streaming: the separate Premium path
Sony launched Portal cloud streaming for PlayStation Plus Premium members on November 5, 2025. This is different from Remote Play: an eligible game runs in Sony’s cloud infrastructure rather than on your own PS5. Premium members can stream select digital PS5 games from their own library and selected catalog games, but eligibility varies by title and region. Sony’s launch announcement described thousands of PS5 games as supported at launch.
Cloud streaming still has boundaries:
- A PlayStation Plus Premium membership is required.
- Only selected PS5 games are eligible; owning a PS5 game does not guarantee that its cloud version is available.
- Availability can differ by country, account region and title.
- PS4 and PS3 games are not currently available for cloud streaming on Portal.
- A broadband connection is required. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 15 Mbps as the recommended speed for a better Remote Play experience; wireless congestion and latency can still affect play even when a speed test exceeds those figures.
Cloud streaming is the Portal scenario that can let you play an eligible PS5 title without using your own PS5 as the source. It is not the same as downloading the game to Portal, and it does not make every PS5 exclusive available on demand.

| Question | Native PC version | Remote Play | Portal cloud streaming |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where does the game run? | On the PC. | On your PS5. | In the cloud. |
| Is a PS5 required? | No, once a native PC edition is available. | Yes. | Not as the streaming source, but Premium and title eligibility are required. |
| Is a separate purchase required? | Yes; the PC and console editions are separate products. | You need access to the PS5 game. | You need Premium and either an eligible digital game in your library or access through the eligible catalog. |
| Which saves are used? | The PC version’s saves; Sony says console and PC saves cannot currently be transferred. | The PS5’s saves. | Cloud-service account and game data, subject to the service’s support for that title. |
| What limits play quality? | PC hardware, drivers and the game’s PC optimization. | PS5 availability, home-network quality and internet latency. | Internet quality, service availability, region and title eligibility. |
Choosing the right method
Choose a native PC release when:
- You do not own a PS5 and the game has an official PC edition.
- You want the lowest dependence on network latency.
- You accept buying a separate version and starting with the PC edition’s save system.
Choose Remote Play when:
- You already own the game on PS5 and want to play it on a laptop, Mac, PS4 or Portal.
- You want to continue using the PS5 version and its local save data.
- You can keep the PS5 connected and maintain at least Sony’s stated 5 Mbps minimum, with 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience.
Choose Portal cloud streaming when:
- You have PlayStation Plus Premium.
- The specific PS5 game is listed as eligible in your region.
- You want to use Portal without relying on your own PS5 as the host.
Common problems and fixes
“The game I own on PS5 is not available on PC”
Check for an official native PC edition. If none exists, the supported PC route is Remote Play from your PS5; purchasing the console version alone does not create a PC license.
“Portal cannot find my PS4”
This is expected behavior, not a pairing fault. Portal supports Remote Play with a PS5, not a PS4. To use Portal’s normal mode, the game must be supplied by a PS5.
“Remote Play connects but feels delayed or drops quality”
- Verify that both ends have a stable connection rather than relying only on a peak download-speed result.
- Use Ethernet for the PS5 where possible and move the receiving device to a less congested Wi-Fi band.
- Pause large downloads, video streams and cloud backups on the same network.
- Compare your connection with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation, remembering that latency and packet loss matter as much as headline speed.
“I cannot find a game in Portal cloud streaming”
Confirm that the account has PlayStation Plus Premium, then check the game’s current cloud eligibility for your region. A PS5 title may be absent because it is not in the supported catalog, is not included in your digital library, or is unavailable in your country. PS4 and PS3 titles are not currently supported for Portal cloud streaming.
Bottom line
PC, PS4 and Portal offer three different kinds of access to PS5 exclusives. A PC can run a separate native port or stream from your PS5. A PS4 can only display a PS5 game through a supported Remote Play setup. Portal is a PS5 streaming accessory for normal use, with a newer Premium cloud-streaming option for selected PS5 games. Before buying anything, identify whether your chosen game has a native PC release, whether you have access to a PS5, and whether the title is eligible for Portal cloud streaming in your region.
