Yes—most PS5 games bought on a physical disc can be installed and played without an internet connection when the console has a working disc drive and the game’s playable content is on the disc. Insert the disc, let the PS5 copy the game data, and start it from Games home. Keep the disc in the drive whenever you play.
There are two important exceptions to plan for: a detachable Disc Drive must be paired with a compatible console online the first time, and some games depend on downloads or online servers even though they are sold on disc. What “offline” means for a PS5 disc game
For this question, offline means the PS5 is not connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet during ordinary play. A disc-based game can usually be installed from the disc itself, then launched without contacting PlayStation Network. The disc acts as both the installation source and the license check: the console verifies that the disc is present when you start the game.

Hardware you need before disconnecting
PS5 with an integrated disc drive
A PS5 model with a built-in Blu-ray drive is ready for ordinary disc use after system setup. Insert a compatible PS5 game disc, allow installation to finish, and launch it from Games home. The disc must remain inserted for subsequent sessions.
PS5 Digital Edition with a detachable drive
A PS5 Digital Edition does not read physical game discs by itself. Compatible slim PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro consoles can gain that capability with Sony’s detachable Disc Drive, but Sony states that an internet connection is required to pair the drive with the console during setup. Complete that one-time pairing while online. Once the drive has been paired, playing supported discs does not normally require a continuous connection.
PS5 Digital Edition without a drive
Without an attached, paired drive, this hardware cannot install or play a physical PS5 game. A disc will not substitute for the missing drive; you need a digital download instead.
How to install a PS5 disc game with no internet
- Finish console preparation first. Complete the PS5’s initial setup and any system software update that the console requires while an internet connection is available. This avoids discovering a setup or firmware requirement after you have gone offline.
- Confirm the drive is usable. For a detachable drive, perform the online pairing before disconnecting. For an integrated drive, make sure the console recognizes discs normally.
- Insert the game disc. Place the disc label-side up in a horizontal console or according to the orientation marked on a vertical stand. The PS5 should begin copying game data automatically.
- Wait for installation. Sony’s documented workflow is to insert the disc, allow game data to install, and wait for the notification that the game is ready to play. Installation speed depends on the disc and console storage; no internet download is implied by this step.
- Open Games home and launch the title. Select the installed game tile. Leave the disc in the drive; removing it normally prevents the license check needed to start the game later.
- Test the specific title offline. Disconnect the network after installation and start the game again. Check the modes you actually intend to use, because a single-player campaign may work while a separate multiplayer or service-based mode does not.
What works without a connection
- The base game data that is playable from the disc.
- Offline single-player campaigns and local modes that the publisher included on the disc.
- Previously installed system software and game features that do not contact a server.
- Disc-based PS4 games on a PS5 model with a Blu-ray drive, subject to PS5 backward-compatibility support for that title.
Progress is normally stored in local save data. Cloud synchronization is unavailable while offline, so a save made on one console will not automatically appear on another until the console reconnects and synchronizes.
What does not work offline
- Online multiplayer: Competitive and cooperative modes that require PlayStation Network or a game server cannot authenticate players without the required service.
- Server-dependent games: A title whose core operation is always online will not become playable merely because it has a disc. The same applies to individual always-online modes inside an otherwise playable game.
- Updates and patches: You receive the version installed from the disc. Bug fixes, performance patches, compatibility updates, and later balancing changes cannot be downloaded while disconnected.
- Downloadable content: Expansions, bonus missions, language packs, and other DLC that is delivered digitally are unavailable unless they were already downloaded and installed.
- Cloud features: Cloud saves and other server-hosted features require a connection.
- Unfinished disc releases: If the publisher requires a substantial download or puts essential content on a server, the disc alone may not be enough.
Do PS5 discs contain the whole game?
There is no universal answer. Some discs contain a complete playable build; others contain a base build that is later supplemented by a patch, optional data, or online services. The practical rule is to treat the disc as the source of the base version, not as a guarantee that every feature advertised for the title is available offline.
Before buying a game specifically for offline use, look for the publisher’s stated internet, download, and account requirements on the packaging or official product information. Pay attention to wording such as “internet required,” “download required,” or a mode described as online-only. A disc edition can still need an account for some features even when its offline campaign works.

Digital ownership therefore has a different preparation step. Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play feature can let eligible downloaded purchases run offline after the console has been configured, but it does not turn a server-dependent game into an offline game. Games obtained through a subscription remain tied to an active PlayStation Plus subscription.

PS4 discs and PS5 Digital Edition limits
A PS5 with a Blu-ray drive also supports PS4 Blu-ray game discs for compatible titles. Insert the PS4 disc, install the game, and leave that disc inserted when playing. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 game disc; PS4 games on that hardware must be downloaded digitally.
This distinction applies to movies and other Blu-ray media as well: a drive-equipped console can read physical media that the drive-less Digital Edition cannot.

Prepare a console for a long offline period
- Perform initial system setup and any required firmware update before leaving the network.
- Pair a detachable Disc Drive while online if your console uses one.
- Install each disc game completely and launch it once before disconnecting.
- Open the game’s menus while online and install any updates or purchased DLC you know you will need. Treat those additions as optional offline preparation, not as part of the disc itself.
- Check that local save data is present. If you rely on cloud saves, synchronize before disconnecting.
- Keep the original disc with the console; the installation does not remove the disc check.
- Leave enough internal storage for the installation. An M.2 NVMe SSD can provide secondary storage for installed games when it meets Sony’s current compatibility and heatsink requirements.
Common offline problems and fixes
The game icon appears, but the game will not start
Confirm that the correct disc is inserted and that it is readable. A damaged or dirty disc can interrupt installation or license verification. If the console has a detachable drive, verify that the drive was paired before the network was disconnected. Reinsert the disc and restart the PS5 after installation has completed.
The console asks for a download
Determine whether the prompt is for an optional update or for essential game content. An update can be postponed, leaving you with the disc version, but essential content or an always-online requirement cannot be bypassed legitimately. Check the publisher’s requirements for that edition rather than assuming every prompt is optional.
Single-player works but another mode is unavailable
This is expected when the campaign is stored locally and the other mode relies on matchmaking, authentication, or a live service. Reconnect only when you need that mode; offline access to the campaign does not imply offline access to the entire title.

A digital game is locked while offline
Reconnect and verify that the game finished downloading, that the purchasing account is signed in, and that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the intended PS5. Subscription games also require the relevant PlayStation Plus entitlement to remain active.
Choosing hardware and games for offline use
Adding a drive to a Digital Edition
If you already own a compatible slim PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro and want to use physical games, the appropriate hardware category is Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive. Plan for the required online pairing during setup; after that step, ordinary supported disc use can be offline.
Buying physical games
Physical PS5 game discs are the direct fit for an offline library, but evaluate each title separately. Confirm that the edition includes playable content on the disc and identify any online, account, or download requirement before purchase. Do not rely on a community percentage or a blanket claim that all discs are offline-ready; Sony does not publish one official title-by-title offline list.

Installed disc games occupy console storage just like digital games. If your library is large, consider a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD, checking Sony’s latest supported specifications and heatsink rules before buying. Extra storage helps hold installations; it does not supply patches, DLC, or server access when the console is offline.
The practical verdict
A disc-equipped PS5 is the most reliable choice for playing supported single-player games without internet: install from the disc, keep the disc inserted, and accept that you are using the unpatched base version. A detachable drive adds a one-time online pairing requirement, while a drive-less Digital Edition cannot use physical games. For every title, verify whether essential downloads or online services are part of the game before counting on it during an outage or offline trip.
