A separate gamepad is optional. Android 9 and later can use on-screen touch controls in the PS Remote Play app. That removes the controller requirement, but it does not remove the need for a PS4 or PS5 host console.

The direct answer
Sony’s official PS Remote Play documentation requires a PS4 or PS5 console to stream PlayStation games to another device. The console runs the game, handles the game data and sends the video to Android. Your phone or tablet does not install or execute the PS4 version locally.
Therefore, the conditions produce two different answers:

A PS5 may serve as the host for compatible games, but it is still a required PlayStation console. A phone, USB accessory, faster router or controller grip cannot substitute for that host.
What Remote Play actually does
Remote Play is a streaming connection between a PlayStation console and another screen. The PS4 or PS5 renders the game, while the Android app receives the video and sends your touch or controller input back to the console. Your experience depends on the console being powered on or available through its approved rest-mode settings, your account, and the network path between both devices.
This architecture explains why Android cannot be a standalone PS4 under Sony’s method. The app is a client, not an emulator or an Android port of PS4 software. Sony’s requirements page does not describe a way to download PS4 games directly to Android and run them without a console.

The bandwidth figures are Sony’s published guidance, not a guarantee. A connection that meets the number can still feel poor if it has high latency, congestion, unstable Wi-Fi or restrictive mobile-data conditions.

Android versions and controller choices
Touch controls: Android 9 and later
Sony lists on-screen controls for Android smartphones and tablets running Android 9 or newer. Once connected, the app overlays virtual buttons and sticks on the display. This is the only supported way in this setup to play without carrying a separate controller.
Touch input is practical for menu navigation, turn-based games and slower genres. It is less comfortable for games that require two analog sticks, rapid shoulder-button combinations, precise aiming or long sessions. The display can become crowded, and your fingers can obscure the action. Those are usability limits rather than a missing feature.
DUALSHOCK 4: Android 10 and later
Sony lists Bluetooth support for a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller on Android 10 or later. Pairing capability can still differ by phone or tablet. Sony advises checking the device manufacturer for controller-driver compatibility before assuming every button and vibration feature will work.

DualSense: Android 12 and later
DualSense support is listed for Android 12 or later. As with DUALSHOCK 4, the Android version threshold does not guarantee identical behavior on every model. Manufacturer drivers, Bluetooth implementation and the app version can affect pairing and input features.

Do you need any controller at all?
No. If the Android device meets the Android 9 threshold and the title accepts Remote Play input, you can select the touch-control layout in the app. A physical controller is an ergonomic option, not a technical prerequisite. Buying a controller can improve comfort, but it will not solve the fundamental problem of having no PS4 or PS5 console.
How to set up Remote Play when you have a console
The exact wording of system menus can change with PS4 and PS5 system software, but the process follows this sequence.
- Prepare the console. Install the latest available system software and sign in to the PlayStation account you intend to use on Android.
- Enable Remote Play. On the console, open the Remote Play connection setting and enable it. On a PS4 this is found under Settings and Remote Play Connection Settings; PS5 uses its Remote Play settings area. Menu labels may vary slightly by software version.
- Allow rest-mode access if needed. If you want to wake the console remotely, open Power Save settings and enable the functions that keep the console connected to the internet and allow it to be turned on from the network. Otherwise, the console generally needs to be running before the app can connect.
- Install the Android app. Download the official PS Remote Play app from the Android app store, then open it.
- Sign in. Use the same PlayStation account associated with the host console. An account mismatch is a common reason for the app not finding the expected system.
- Choose the console. Select PS4 or PS5 in the app and follow the pairing prompts. The app searches over the network and may ask for a code shown on the console when automatic discovery fails.
- Choose input. Accept the touch-control overlay to play without a gamepad. If you own a compatible controller, pair it through Android Bluetooth before or after connecting to Remote Play.
- Launch the game. Start a title that is installed and available on the console. The Android screen now mirrors the console session rather than running a local Android version.
Keep the console connected to broadband and avoid shutting it down if you rely on rest-mode wake-up. The phone and console do not have to use the same Wi-Fi network for every use case, but both sides need a working internet route and the console’s settings must permit remote access.
Internet speed, data use and responsiveness
Sony specifies 5 Mbps as the minimum internet speed for Remote Play and recommends 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are download-oriented service guidelines; they do not describe a guaranteed frame rate, resolution or latency.

- Home Wi-Fi: Place the Android device where signal strength is stable. Congested 2.4 GHz networks, distance from the access point and simultaneous video uploads can cause stutter or delayed controls.
- Console connection: A wired Ethernet connection from the console to the router can remove one wireless hop, although it cannot fix a slow or congested internet service.
- Mobile data: Remote Play can consume a substantial portion of a cellular allowance. Monitor your plan and stop the session if the connection begins switching between towers or throttling.
- Latency: A speed test may show enough bandwidth while the game still feels sluggish. Round-trip delay, packet loss and jitter affect aiming and timing more than the headline Mbps number.
If the image drops quality, first reduce competing traffic on the network and move closer to the access point. Reconnecting the app can clear a transient session problem, but no network tweak can turn Remote Play into offline, local Android play.

Having a console and a fast connection does not make every PlayStation title eligible. Sony excludes games that require a PlayStation VR headset or additional peripherals beyond the controllers it lists. It also excludes games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership rather than run from the console in a normal Remote Play session.
Check the individual game’s control and accessory requirements before planning a touch-only session. A title may launch but remain impractical if it expects a steering wheel, camera, VR hardware or another device that Android cannot provide. Remote Play limitations can also apply to specific in-game modes even when the main game is playable.

What if you have no PS4 or PS5?
Under the Sony method documented above, there is no supported console-free path. The Android app cannot authenticate a nonexistent host, and Sony does not present native PS4 execution on Android as an alternative in its Remote Play requirements.
Cloud-streaming services, unofficial emulators and modified Android packages are separate subjects with different licensing, hardware, security and compatibility concerns. They should not be confused with Sony’s Remote Play feature, and the cited requirements do not establish that any of them will provide a particular PS4 game.
If your only missing item is a controller, use touch controls on Android 9 or newer. If the missing item is the console, a controller purchase, phone upgrade or network upgrade does not satisfy the requirement; you would need access to a compatible PlayStation console before Remote Play can begin.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The app cannot find the console
- Confirm that the phone is signed in to the same PlayStation account as the console.
- Check that Remote Play is enabled on the console and that it is powered on or configured for permitted rest-mode access.
- Verify that both devices have internet access, then restart the app and retry pairing.
- If automatic discovery fails, use the console’s displayed pairing code when the app offers manual registration.
The picture is blurry or keeps freezing
- Compare your connection with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation.
- Pause large downloads, uploads and video streams on the same network.
- Move the Android device closer to the router or test a less congested Wi-Fi band.
- Try a wired console connection and check whether mobile-data throttling is involved.
Touch buttons do not appear or feel unusable
- Confirm that the device runs Android 9 or later and that the Remote Play app is current.
- Open the in-session controls menu and enable the on-screen layout.
- Rotate the device or adjust the overlay so sticks and buttons do not cover the most important view.
- For games that demand precise simultaneous inputs, consider a compatible controller; touch controls remain available but may not be comfortable.
A controller pairs but buttons do not work correctly
Check the Android threshold—10 or later for DUALSHOCK 4 and 12 or later for DualSense—and consult the phone manufacturer’s compatibility information. Bluetooth pairing alone does not guarantee full driver support.

- Do you have access to a PS4 or PS5? If not, Sony Remote Play cannot provide the game.
- Is your Android device on Android 9 or newer? That is Sony’s threshold for touch controls.
- Is your connection at least 5 Mbps? Treat 15 Mbps as the preferred target, not a performance guarantee.
- Does the game avoid VR and unlisted-peripheral requirements? Excluded hardware can make a title incompatible.
- Are you comfortable with touch input? It replaces a controller technically, but not always ergonomically.
The practical verdict is simple: Android can be the screen and controller interface for a PS4 or PS5 session, and touch controls can replace a separate gamepad. Android cannot replace the PlayStation console that runs the game, so playing PS4 games through Sony’s supported method with neither a console nor a controller is not possible.
