How to install it on Steam Deck
Installation uses the normal Steam purchase and library flow. The game remains a Windows title; Proton is selected as the runtime when Steam launches it.
- Open Gaming Mode and go to Library.
- Find Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, install it, and wait for Steam to finish downloading the Windows files.

Playing on a Linux desktop
On a desktop distribution, install the Linux version of the Steam client, add the game to your library, and let Steam use Proton for the Windows release. The same compatibility-layer principle applies as on SteamOS, but the result can vary with your distribution, graphics driver, Proton build, desktop session, and hardware.

- In the game’s Properties, open Compatibility and enable a specific Steam Play tool when you need to choose one manually.
- Try Proton Stable first, then test another installed Proton version if launch behavior changes after an update or if the first choice does not start correctly.

Unlike a fixed Steam Deck image, a Linux desktop may receive driver and desktop-environment updates on a different schedule. Which Proton version should you use?
Use Proton Stable as the first choice because it is the runtime listed in SteamDB’s current configuration data. Stable is a sensible baseline when you want the configuration most directly associated with the title’s recorded SteamOS check.
There is no requirement in the available compatibility record to use a particular numbered Proton release. If behavior differs between updates, test another Proton version already offered by Steam and change only one variable at a time. A version change can help when a launch regression affects your setup, but it can also alter controller or display behavior, so keep the working selection noted in the game’s Compatibility settings.

- The game stops launching after an update: try another available Proton version, then retest.

When buttons do not map correctly

Text-entry screens
SteamDB warns that the on-screen keyboard may need to be invoked manually. On Deck, bring up the keyboard when the game or a launcher requests text instead of waiting for it to appear automatically. A physical keyboard on a desktop normally avoids this specific issue, but the underlying requirement is the same: the game may not open the virtual keyboard on its own.

The original game does not support the Steam Deck’s native display resolution. SteamDB therefore notes the possibility of degraded performance related to the non-native resolution. This is a compatibility limitation of the title’s display support, not evidence that the Deck’s hardware is unable to run it.
If the picture is stretched, cropped, surrounded by unused space, or otherwise does not fit, work through the game’s display and aspect-ratio options before changing several system settings at once. On an external monitor, compare the game’s selected resolution with the display’s current mode. A dock can make a mismatched output mode more visible, but a dock is not required for the game to run.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
The game will not start
- Confirm that Steam is using Proton for the Windows release.
- Set the game to Proton Stable and try again.
- If launch behavior changed after an update, test another Proton version available in the Compatibility menu.
- Check the current SteamDB compatibility record and relevant Steam Community bug-fix topics before making multiple simultaneous changes.
The game starts but the controller is unusable
- Open Steam Input for the game.
- Test the default layout, then select a community configuration if the mapping remains wrong.
- On desktop Linux, reconnect or select the controller before restarting the game so Steam detects the intended device.
The screen does not fit or looks wrong
- Review the game’s resolution and aspect-ratio settings.
- Check the Deck or desktop output mode, especially when using an external display.
- Change one option at a time and relaunch if necessary.
- Remember that the game’s lack of support for the Deck’s native resolution is a documented limitation, so a perfect native-resolution result is not guaranteed.
A warning or text-entry prompt appears
Use the on-screen keyboard manually when requested, and treat compatibility warnings as guidance to verify the current SteamDB record and Steam Community discussions. The warning alone does not override SteamDB’s current Playable and SteamOS Compatible classification.
