Pokémon TCG Pocket is free to start and can be played without spending money. Every player can open two booster packs each day at no cost, collect digital cards, build decks and use the battle features. The official game listing describes it as “Free-to-start; optional in-game purchases available,” and Pokémon Support’s Gameplay FAQ, updated July 30, 2026, says: “The game is free to start. There are optional in-app purchases.”
Spending money changes the pace and breadth of progression rather than basic access. Poké Gold can shorten certain timers or cover specific activities, while the optional Premium Pass adds benefits for a monthly fee. Neither is required to open the daily free packs or play ordinary battles.

What “free to play” means in Pokémon TCG Pocket
Pokémon TCG Pocket uses a free-to-start model. You download the mobile app without paying an entry fee, and the core collecting-and-battling loop remains available if you never buy Poké Gold or subscribe to the Premium Pass.
The free experience is paced rather than unlimited. Your main guaranteed source of new cards is the daily booster-pack allowance, supplemented by missions, events and other in-app rewards. Paid options mainly let you do more sooner, reduce waiting or receive additional benefits. The official information does not promise that a non-paying player will complete every expansion by a particular date.

The app is not a rules-identical replacement for the physical Pokémon Trading Card Game. Pokémon Support notes that Pocket has its own rules, so free access to Pocket should be understood as access to this mobile game’s collecting and battle systems.
What free players receive
Two booster-pack openings every day
The official Pokémon TCG Pocket site states: “In this game, you will be able to open two booster packs every day at no cost.” These are digital packs containing cards, including nostalgic artwork and cards made specifically for Pocket. The two-pack allowance is the central free collecting loop; you do not need to buy Poké Gold to claim it.
Daily access does not mean you can open an unlimited number of packs whenever you choose. Additional openings are governed by the app’s timers and available rewards. A player who checks in consistently receives more free opportunities over time than a player who rarely opens the app.

The daily reset occurs at 6:00 a.m. UTC
Pokémon Support’s Gameplay FAQ, updated July 30, 2026, says: “The date changes at 6:00 a.m. (UTC).” Use that UTC point—not midnight in your local time—as the reliable boundary for daily activities. Depending on your time zone, a new day may arrive in the morning, afternoon or evening.
Daily missions can be claimed once per day, and rewards with a stated availability period can expire when that period ends. If you are planning a routine around the free packs or event rewards, check the in-game timer instead of assuming that your local calendar day controls it.

Missions, events and other in-app rewards
Free progression is not limited to the two daily packs. Missions and events can provide rewards that help you collect cards or continue playing. The exact reward mix and availability can change by activity, so treat event rewards as opportunities rather than a guaranteed permanent income stream.
Claim time-limited rewards before their availability period closes. Missing a claim window can mean losing that particular reward; the daily reset does not necessarily restore an expired event item.

Pack points do not expire. However, points earned from one expansion can be exchanged only for cards in that same expansion. That restriction makes it important to decide which expansion you want to target before redeeming points, especially if you are saving toward a particular card.
What paying can change
Poké Gold
Poké Gold is an optional in-game currency. Pokémon Support lists uses that include shortening the waiting time to open packs, shortening Wonder Pick waits, restoring an expired Wonder Pick and participating in some solo event battles when event stamina is insufficient.
Those uses provide convenience or extra opportunities. They do not establish a requirement to buy Poké Gold for ordinary access. A player who never purchases it can continue using the free pack cycle, missions, events and other rewards, while accepting the normal timers and any limits attached to free activities.

Premium Pass
The Premium Pass is a separate optional subscription. Pokémon Support’s Purchase and Premium Pass FAQ, updated May 12, 2026, defines it as “a paid service that allows you to receive several in-game benefits for a set monthly fee.” A plan lasts one month.

The cited official FAQ does not state a guaranteed collection-completion date for subscribers, nor does it establish that every Premium Pass benefit increases the daily free-pack allowance. Its practical value is the additional package of benefits and the possibility of progressing more quickly or conveniently, not basic eligibility to play.
The 14-day trial and automatic renewal
A first-time subscriber can use a 14-day no-cost Premium Pass trial once per Apple Account or once per Google Account. When the trial ends, automatic billing begins unless you cancel automatic renewal at least 24 hours before the trial ends.
Deleting or uninstalling the app does not cancel the subscription. If you start the trial only to test the benefits, manage the subscription through the Apple or Google account that started it and confirm the renewal status before the 24-hour cutoff. The trial is an account-level first-use offer, not a new free trial every time you reinstall the app.
Free play versus Premium Pass

How to play entirely free
- Install the app on a supported device. Create or use the account required by the app, then complete the opening tutorial and any introductory activities.
- Check the pack timer every day. The official free allowance is two booster-pack openings per day. Use the in-game timer and remember that the date changes at 6:00 a.m. UTC.
- Complete available missions. Missions are part of the free progression path. Claim their rewards before any stated availability period expires.
- Watch event rules and stamina. Events may have their own entry conditions, timers or stamina limits. If a solo event says stamina is insufficient, Poké Gold is one listed way to participate, but you can continue with activities that do not require that purchase.
- Use Wonder Pick on its normal schedule. Wonder Pick waits are one of the timers that Poké Gold can shorten. Free players can let the timer run rather than paying to accelerate it, subject to the feature’s availability rules.
- Save pack points deliberately. Points do not expire, but they are locked to the expansion in which they were earned. Redeem them for that expansion’s cards when you have a clear target.
- Build and test decks with what you collect. Pocket’s battle system is available to free players, and its rules are specific to the app rather than identical to the tabletop game.
Can you build decks and battle without buying cards?
Yes. Free players can collect cards, assemble decks and use the app’s battle features. The practical limitation is card access: a non-paying account receives new cards according to the daily packs, missions, events and other rewards it earns, so your deck choices may grow more slowly than those of someone using paid accelerators.

Do not assume that a strategy, deck list or rules explanation from the physical Pokémon TCG transfers perfectly to Pocket. Pokémon Support explicitly distinguishes Pocket’s rules from the physical game. Learn the app’s own card interactions, battle flow and deck restrictions as you play.
What happens if you never buy Poké Gold?
Nothing prevents you from continuing to play. You keep the free daily pack opportunities and can use missions, events and other rewards. The trade-off is waiting: you cannot use Poké Gold to shorten pack or Wonder Pick timers, restore an expired Wonder Pick or cover a solo event battle when event stamina is insufficient.
That trade-off is best understood as slower access, not a paywall on the basic game. Whether the slower pace is acceptable depends on how quickly you want a particular card, how often you check in and how much you value optional event activity.

- Android: Android 7.0 or later, with Vulkan support, 64-bit support and at least 3 GB of RAM.
Meeting those specifications does not guarantee that the app will work on every device. Hardware variations, operating-system builds and compatibility issues can still affect installation or performance. If the app is unstable, verify the operating-system version and device capabilities before assuming that spending money will fix the problem.

Common free-to-play pitfalls
Confusing local midnight with the game day
The reset is 6:00 a.m. UTC. A missed pack or mission may simply be waiting for that reset rather than being broken. Convert the UTC time to your own time zone and use the in-game countdown as the final check.
Letting time-limited rewards expire
Daily missions can be claimed once per day, and unclaimed rewards may expire when their availability period ends. Open the mission and event screens regularly and claim completed rewards instead of assuming they will be stored indefinitely.
Spending pack points in the wrong expansion
Pack points do not expire, but they cannot be moved between expansions. Saving points is useful only if you remember which expansion generated them and intend to redeem them there.
Starting a trial without a cancellation plan
The 14-day Premium Pass trial converts to paid renewal unless automatic renewal is canceled at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Set a reminder when you start, check the Apple or Google subscription settings, and do not rely on uninstalling the app.
How long does a free collection take?
No authoritative source cited for Pocket publishes a guaranteed number of days for a non-paying player to complete a collection or an expansion. Any exact timeline would depend on the cards you pull, the missions and events available during that period, your check-in frequency and the app’s future reward structure.
You can therefore make a reliable plan around the daily two-pack allowance and known timers, but not around a promised completion date. A claim that free players will finish every expansion by a fixed deadline goes beyond the official evidence.
A sensible routine for a non-paying player
- Check in after the 6:00 a.m. UTC reset has passed in your time zone.
- Open both free booster packs before the next cycle.
- Review missions and claim anything that is ready or close to expiring.
- Check event deadlines and Wonder Pick timers rather than paying automatically to accelerate them.
- Keep pack points organized by expansion and spend them on a deliberate target.
- Use battles to learn Pocket’s rules and refine decks from the cards you actually own.
This routine does not maximize speed; it maximizes the value of the free systems while avoiding accidental subscription charges and wasted, expired rewards.
