As of October 18, 2026, the exact original Game Boy versions of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are officially playable on a Nintendo 3DS only when those Virtual Console releases were already purchased and remain associated with the system or account. Nintendo has not announced the originals for Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics. Switch and Switch 2 do offer Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen, but those are Game Boy Advance remakes released as separate digital games, not the original Game Boy code.
The short answer by platform
Your best choice depends on whether “Red and Blue” means the original games exactly, or the same adventure rebuilt for newer hardware.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Route | Are the original Red and Blue available? | What you can legally do now | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console | Yes, if already purchased | New purchases ended with the 3DS eShop closure. Nintendo continues to support redownloads of owned software for the foreseeable future. | The closest official way to play the original games portably |
| Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics | No announcement | Nintendo’s current FAQ lists other Pokémon software but does not announce the original Red or Blue. | Players willing to wait for a future catalog announcement |
| Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 with FireRed and LeafGreen | No; these are remakes | Standalone digital releases launched February 28, 2026. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. | Modern hardware, updated remake features and local wireless play |
| Original Game Boy hardware and cartridge | Yes | You need an authentic cartridge and functioning compatible hardware. Availability and condition depend on the used market. | Collectors and players who want the original hardware experience |
There is no currently announced first-party download that puts the original Game Boy binaries on Switch or Switch 2. A listing for a Switch Pokémon game therefore does not, by itself, mean it is Red or Blue.
Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console: the official original-game route
What Nintendo actually released
Nintendo lists Pokémon Red Version and Pokémon Blue Version as Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console software. The listing also identifies the games as compatible with Poké Transporter. That is a reference to the original Virtual Console releases, not to the later FireRed and LeafGreen remakes.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The 3DS version preserves the Game Boy-era presentation and rules. If your priority is the exact maps, text, battle behavior and technical quirks of the 1996–1999 releases, this is the official portable edition to look for.
Why you cannot simply buy them today
Nintendo stopped accepting new purchases in the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops on March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. That means a new owner cannot open the 3DS eShop and purchase Red or Blue for the first time.
Nintendo’s discontinuation guidance says previously purchased games and downloadable content can still be redownloaded, and software updates can still be received, for the foreseeable future. “For the foreseeable future” is not a permanent guarantee, so a 3DS that already has the legitimate purchase is valuable to preserve rather than reset or replace casually.
How to redownload an owned copy
- Use the same Nintendo 3DS system and Nintendo account or system ownership record that held the original purchase.
- Connect the 3DS to the internet and open Nintendo eShop.
- Open the eShop menu and choose the redownloadable-software or redownload section; menu wording can vary by region and system software.
- Find Pokémon Red Version or Pokémon Blue Version, select the download command and let the software install to the system or its SD card.
- Return to the HOME Menu and launch the game. If it is missing from the redownload list, check that you are using the purchasing system/account and that the software was not merely advertised by a previous seller.
A marketplace description that says “3DS with Pokémon Red and Blue” is not proof that the games are legally included. The license is associated with the original system or account record, so ask the seller to demonstrate the software in the HOME Menu and, where possible, in the eShop redownload list before paying.

What happened to 3DS online features
Nintendo ended online play and other online communication functionality for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software on April 8, 2024. That shutdown is separate from the ability to redownload software. Do not buy a 3DS expecting current online battles, online trading or other network services for Red and Blue. Nintendo’s listing of Poké Transporter compatibility also should not be treated as a promise that every transfer service is available indefinitely; check the current status of the specific service on your system.
Switch and Switch 2: why the originals are not there
Nintendo Classics has no Red and Blue announcement
Nintendo’s current support FAQ discusses the Pokémon games presently offered through Nintendo Classics and says, “We have nothing to announce regarding any other potential titles.” As of October 18, 2026, that means the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are not announced for the Switch or Switch 2 Game Boy catalog.
This is a status statement, not a promise that the games will never arrive. Nintendo can change a subscription catalog later, but a rumor, an old trailer or the presence of another Pokémon title is not evidence of a current Red and Blue release. Until Nintendo publishes a product listing, treat the originals as unavailable on Switch and Switch 2.

FireRed and LeafGreen on Switch: a modern alternative, not the originals
Release and purchase model
Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen launched as digital-only releases for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 on February 28, 2026. Nintendo says they are standalone software and are not planned for release as part of the Game Boy Advance Nintendo Classics collection.
You can purchase and play them without Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo also states that online play is not supported, while local wireless trading and battling are supported. That combination makes them suitable for two nearby Switch systems, but not for internet matchmaking or internet-based trading.
How the remakes differ from Game Boy Red and Blue
FireRed and LeafGreen rebuild the Kanto adventure using the Game Boy Advance-era engine and content. They retain the broad story, region and original Pokémon focus, but they are not the same ROM, presentation or feature set as the Game Boy releases. Graphics, audio, menus, battle systems, item behavior and connectivity reflect the remakes rather than the 1990s cartridges.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesChoose FireRed or LeafGreen when you want the Kanto journey on current hardware, local wireless functions and a presentation designed for the Game Boy Advance generation. Choose the 3DS Virtual Console edition or an original cartridge when fidelity to the Game Boy versions matters more than modern conveniences.

Playing the originals on Game Boy hardware
An authentic Pokémon Red or Blue cartridge and a working original Game Boy-family system remain a direct way to play the original software. This route avoids account and eShop issues, but it depends on finding a genuine cartridge in usable condition and compatible hardware. Used-market inventory, prices and cartridge condition change constantly, so inspect the item rather than assuming a photograph or seller title proves authenticity.
- Confirm that the cartridge label and board are consistent with an original Nintendo release rather than a reproduction.
- Ask whether the cartridge has been tested in compatible hardware and whether it retains saves.
- Check that the handheld, screen, controls, cartridge slot and power accessories work together.
- Remember that a cartridge-only purchase does not include a 3DS Virtual Console license or a Switch download.
This is the most faithful hardware experience, but it is the least convenient option for someone who wants a new digital purchase, modern display output or wireless features.
Compare the choices on the four decisions that matter
| Decision | 3DS Virtual Console Red/Blue | Switch/Switch 2 FireRed/LeafGreen | Original Game Boy cartridge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fidelity to Game Boy code | Exact original Virtual Console releases | Remakes using the Game Boy Advance-era software and features | Original cartridge software |
| Can a new player buy it digitally today? | No; only redownload an existing purchase | Yes, as standalone digital software | No digital purchase; requires physical used hardware and cartridge |
| Portability | Portable 3DS system | Portable or docked Switch/Switch 2 | Portable Game Boy-family system |
| Connectivity documented by Nintendo | Do not assume current online services after the 3DS network shutdown | Local wireless trading and battling; online play is not supported | Original hardware features depend on the specific system and accessories |
| Ownership risk | Depends on the original 3DS/account purchase record and continued redownload support | Purchased through the current Switch eShop as standalone software | Depends on cartridge authenticity and physical condition |
How to buy a used 3DS without paying for a promise
Verify the software before purchase
- Request a photo or video showing both Red and Blue on the HOME Menu, not merely a seller’s written description.
- Ask the seller to open the eShop redownload area and show the titles associated with that system or account.
- Clarify whether the console will remain with the purchasing account and whether it has been factory-reset. A reset or account change can affect access to digitally owned software.
- Confirm the exact titles: “Pokémon Red Version” and “Pokémon Blue Version” Virtual Console, not a reproduction cartridge, save file, theme or a different Pokémon game.
Inspect the hardware
Test both screens, the touch screen, buttons, circle pad, shoulder buttons, cartridge slot, wireless switch, charger and SD card. A working game license is not useful if the console cannot reliably boot or save. Keep the system and its account details secure after purchase, and do not assume Nintendo will reopen purchases because a listing is scarce.

Calling FireRed and LeafGreen “the original games”
They are remakes. Their shared Kanto setting can make store descriptions sound interchangeable with Red and Blue, but the underlying software and feature sets are different.

Assuming every 3DS listing includes a legal digital copy
The 3DS eShop closure means sellers cannot create a new Red or Blue purchase for you. Only an existing legitimate ownership record supports a redownload.
Expecting internet trading on a Switch
Nintendo documents local wireless trading and battling for the Switch and Switch 2 FireRed/LeafGreen releases and says online play is not supported. Plan for nearby-console multiplayer only.
Treating a future catalog as confirmed
Nintendo has not announced original Red and Blue for Switch or Switch 2 Nintendo Classics. Check Nintendo’s current product and support pages when availability changes; do not rely on rumors or an unrelated Pokémon release.

Which option should you choose?
Choose a 3DS Virtual Console copy if exact authenticity is the priority
This is the practical official route for the original games in a portable format, provided the purchase already belongs to the 3DS system or account. It is the strongest choice for preserving the Game Boy-era experience without buying aging cartridge hardware.
Choose Switch or Switch 2 if convenience and remake features matter more
FireRed and LeafGreen give you a current-console Kanto adventure, digital installation and local wireless features. Buy them knowing that they are remakes and that Nintendo Switch Online is unnecessary.
Choose original hardware if collecting and historical fidelity are the goal
An authentic cartridge on compatible Game Boy hardware gives you the physical original, but it requires careful buying and maintenance. Condition and authenticity are your responsibility.
Wait if you specifically want original Red and Blue on Switch
There is no announced Switch or Switch 2 release for the originals as of October 18, 2026. Waiting is reasonable if you do not want a 3DS or physical cartridge, but no release date or purchase option has been promised.
