Can You Play PlayStation Plus Monthly Games Offline? License and Access Rules

Yes. A PlayStation Plus Monthly Game that you claimed and completely downloaded can generally be played without an internet connection while your PlayStation Plus membership remains active. On PS5, turn on Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, activate the console as your account’s primary PS4. If the subscription expires, games obtained at no cost through Monthly Games are locked until the membership is active again.

What “offline” means for a PlayStation Plus Monthly Game

PlayStation Plus Monthly Games are subscription benefits, not permanent purchases. Sony describes them as games available to download and play at no extra cost during an active PlayStation Plus membership. New Monthly Games are added each calendar month.

To use one without an internet connection, you must complete the online parts first: claim the game while subscribed, download it to the console, and configure that console for offline use. Once those conditions are met, the installed game can generally launch and run offline for its offline-capable content.

Offline access does not convert the title into a purchase. The console still relies on the subscription license being valid. If your membership ends, Sony removes access to Monthly Games obtained at no cost, even if the game remains installed on the drive.

How to prepare a Monthly Game before going offline

  1. Claim the game while your membership is active. Add the current Monthly Game to your PlayStation Plus library before disconnecting the console. Merely seeing the game listed is not enough; it needs to be added to your account.
  2. Download the complete game. Start the download on the PS5 or PS4 and wait until installation finishes. A partial download, an uninstalled add-on, or a title that is only available through streaming will not provide a reliable offline setup.
  3. Enable the console’s offline authorization. On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and enable it. On PS4, activate that console as your account’s primary PS4.
  4. Test before leaving the internet. Disconnect the console or pause its network connection and start the installed game. Testing first gives you time to correct a license, activation, or incomplete-download problem.
  5. Keep the membership active. Offline play works while the PlayStation Plus subscription is active. A downloaded Monthly Game does not remain playable after the subscription ends.

Launching the game once while online is a useful practical check, but it does not replace claiming the title or enabling the appropriate console setting. The important state is that the game is in your library, fully installed, and authorized for offline use.

PS5: Console Sharing and Offline Play

What the setting does

With Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, anyone using that PS5 can play your games and media even when the console is offline. Sony also allows some PlayStation Plus benefits to be used by other users on that console. This is the PS5 mechanism that lets a downloaded Monthly Game continue to start without a network connection.

One PS5 at a time

Only one PS5 can have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled for your account at a time. If you enable it on a different PS5, the previous console no longer has that offline-sharing authorization. This matters when you move between a home console and a second console: the setting follows the account’s selected PS5 rather than applying to every PS5 you use.

What other users can and cannot assume

Other profiles using the authorized PS5 may be able to play the shared downloaded Monthly Game offline, but the subscription itself still belongs to the subscribing account. Benefits that require an online connection or a separate entitlement do not become available merely because Console Sharing is enabled.

PS4: primary-console activation

The PS4 equivalent

On PS4, the equivalent authorization is activating one console as your account’s primary PS4. Sony lists downloaded Monthly Games among the benefits shareable on one PS4 activated as primary. After activation, users on that console can use the downloaded game offline while the subscribing account’s membership remains active.

Changing consoles

A PlayStation account can have only the designated primary PS4 for this sharing arrangement. If you activate another PS4, the previous system no longer provides the same primary-console sharing status. Before traveling with a different PS4, activate the intended console and verify the game while you still have an internet connection.

PS4 and PS5 are separate settings

Primary PS4 activation and PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play are platform-specific controls. Setting up one does not automatically authorize every other PS4 or PS5 associated with your account. Configure the platform you will actually use offline.

What happens when PlayStation Plus expires?

Sony states that when a PlayStation Plus subscription ends, you lose access to Plus benefits including Monthly Games, online storage, and online multiplayer. For Monthly Games downloaded at no cost through the subscription, expiration is a license loss rather than a deletion event: the files may remain installed, but the console can no longer launch them under the expired entitlement.

Renewing or reactivating the membership restores the subscription benefit for Monthly Games that you previously claimed. Until the membership is active again, expect a lock or an instruction to subscribe when you select the game.

This rule is different from a game bought with a discount offered to Plus members. A discounted purchase is a normal purchase entitlement and remains yours after Plus expires. The fact that a game is installed, or that you paid something for it during a promotion, does not by itself determine the license; whether it was acquired at no cost as a Monthly Game or purchased is what matters.

Monthly Games versus the Game Catalog

PlayStation Plus has more than one type of game benefit, and the offline rules are not identical.

Case What you must have Offline result Main limitation
Monthly Game claimed at no cost Claimed title, complete download, active Plus membership, and the PS5 or PS4 offline authorization Generally playable offline while the membership is active Access ends when the subscription expires
Game Catalog title downloaded through Extra or Premium The corresponding plan, a download, and the console’s offline authorization Can work offline while the title remains included and the plan is active Sony can remove catalog titles; access depends on both tier and catalog availability
Classic Catalog title The required plan and a valid catalog entitlement Offline behavior follows the title and plan entitlement after download Catalog membership can change, so downloading does not make the title permanent
Cloud-streamed game A supported plan, an internet connection, and sufficient bandwidth Not playable offline Streaming requires at least 5 Mbps; 1080p streaming requires 15 Mbps
Online multiplayer in an installed game A network connection and, where required, an active Plus membership The offline portions may work, but multiplayer does not Network access is required for the online session

The key distinction is entitlement type. Monthly Games that you claim stay associated with your library as a Plus benefit, while catalog games are conditional on the title continuing to be offered in the catalog for your plan.

Features that still require the internet

Online multiplayer

An installed Monthly Game can have an offline campaign or local mode, but online multiplayer needs a network connection. PlayStation Plus is normally required for online multiplayer, so disconnecting the console removes both the network path and the ability to authenticate the online session.

Cloud streaming

Cloud streaming sends the game from a remote service instead of running the complete game locally. It therefore cannot be used offline. Sony lists a minimum broadband requirement of 5 Mbps, with 15 Mbps required for 1080p streaming. Those figures are service requirements, not a way to prepare a streamed title for travel; you must download and install a supported game for offline play.

Cloud saves and other network services

Online storage is a PlayStation Plus benefit and is unavailable while the console is disconnected. You can continue using local save data, but synchronization with cloud storage, downloading updates, browsing the store, and checking current service information all require a connection. If a game needs an online account, server, or live event, that part will not function offline even when the base installation launches.

Why a downloaded Monthly Game shows a padlock

A padlock usually means the console cannot currently validate the entitlement or the required console authorization. Work through these checks in order:

  • Confirm the subscription. Check that the PlayStation Plus membership is active on the account that claimed the game. An expired membership is the most direct explanation for a previously working Monthly Game becoming locked.
  • Confirm the game was claimed. A download started from a trial, catalog listing, or another account is not necessarily the same as adding the Monthly Game to your own library.
  • Check the PS5 setting or PS4 activation. On PS5, verify Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. On PS4, verify that the console is still activated as the primary PS4 for the subscribing account.
  • Reconnect briefly and check PlayStation service status. A temporary service or account problem can make a valid license appear unavailable. After the service is reachable, restart the console and test again.
  • Restore licenses. Use the console’s built-in Restore Licenses option in the account or settings area, then restart the game. This refreshes the console’s record of your digital entitlements; it does not extend an expired membership.
  • Check the installation. Make sure the main game is fully installed and that any required content is present. An icon can remain visible while the playable data is incomplete.

If the lock remains after the membership, activation, service status, and license checks are all correct, contact PlayStation Support with the account and console details. Do not delete the game first unless support instructs you to; reinstalling cannot fix an expired entitlement.

Sharing a Monthly Game with another console or person

Sharing is limited by Sony’s console authorization model, not by how many times the game has been downloaded. On PS5, one account can enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on one PS5. On PS4, one console can be activated as the primary PS4. These settings let other users on the authorized console access eligible downloaded games.

They do not grant the game to every console where you sign in, and they do not remove the requirement for the subscribing account’s membership to remain active. A second PS5 or PS4 that is not authorized may require the purchasing account to be online for license verification, and a game obtained through another plan or account follows that account’s entitlement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When changing households or consoles, decide which single PS5 or primary PS4 should support offline users, enable the setting there, download the game, and test it before disconnecting. Switching the authorization later can change which console has offline-sharing access.

Travel and outage checklist

  • Claim every Monthly Game you intend to use before the monthly offer changes.
  • Download and install the full title, not only a launcher or streaming shortcut.
  • Install required updates while online when the game offers them; offline play cannot fetch a missing patch.
  • Enable PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play, or activate the intended PS4 as primary.
  • Start the game once, then test with the console disconnected.
  • Keep the PlayStation Plus membership active for the entire period you need the Monthly Game.
  • Store local saves on the console; cloud-save synchronization will wait until the connection returns.
  • For multiplayer, arrange a network connection; offline mode covers only the game’s offline features.

Quick decision guide

Your situation Can you play offline? What to do
Claimed Monthly Game, fully downloaded, active membership Generally yes Use the authorized PS5 or primary PS4 and launch the installed copy
Game installed, but membership expired No Reactivate PlayStation Plus; the no-cost Monthly Game license is unavailable while expired
Game is in Extra or Premium Catalog Only while the plan and catalog listing remain valid Check the plan tier and whether Sony still offers the title
Game is cloud-streamed No Download an eligible version or remain online for streaming
Offline campaign works, multiplayer does not Expected Reconnect to the internet and meet the game’s online and Plus requirements
Padlock appears unexpectedly Not until the license is fixed Check membership, claim status, console authorization, service status, and restore licenses

The practical answer

Downloaded PlayStation Plus Monthly Games are designed to work offline, but only as an active subscription benefit. Claim the title before disconnecting, finish the download, authorize the PS5 or PS4 for offline use, and keep Plus active. Treat catalog games, streaming, multiplayer, cloud storage, and expired memberships as separate cases: each has additional conditions that a local offline installation cannot bypass.
