PlayStation releases selected first-party games on PC as separate Windows products, usually sold through Steam or Epic Games. Xbox first-party games are more often released for Windows PC at the same time as Xbox, with some supporting Xbox Play Anywhere, Game Pass, cloud gaming, or backward-compatibility programs.
You do not automatically receive a PC copy because you own a PlayStation game on PS4 or PS5. With Xbox, a digital game carrying the Play Anywhere badge is the important exception: one purchase works on Xbox and Windows PC, and your saves, add-ons, and achievements follow you.

What “first-party” means here
A first-party game is published by the platform holder or one of its owned studios. In this case, that means games from PlayStation Studios on the Sony side and games published through Xbox on the Microsoft side. “First-party” does not mean every game is available on every device. Each platform uses a different release policy, and availability can change by title, region, storefront, and date.

How PlayStation first-party games work on PC
PlayStation has a title-by-title PC catalog
Sony’s PC strategy is selective rather than universal. It publishes individual ports, so you must check the specific game instead of assuming that every PlayStation Studios release has a Windows version. The current catalog includes The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Helldivers 2, Ghost of Tsushima, God of War Ragnarök, Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Returnal, Stellar Blade, and Until Dawn, among other titles.
A game can arrive on PC long after its console launch, and another PlayStation release may still have no announced PC version. Release timing is therefore a property of the individual game, not a guarantee attached to the PlayStation Studios name.
Where you buy the PC version
Sony lists Steam and Epic Games as PC retailers for its ports. The store listing is the authoritative place to check the current edition, release date, language support, downloadable content, and hardware requirements. A listing may offer a standard edition, a complete edition, or a remastered edition, so match the product name carefully with the version you intend to play.
A PlayStation console purchase normally does not unlock PC
Sony treats the console and PC editions as different products. Buying a PS4 or PS5 copy does not normally provide the Windows version, and buying the PC version does not provide the console edition. If you own the game on PlayStation and want to play it on PC, plan on purchasing the PC release separately when one exists.

PlayStation saves do not currently move from console to PC
Sony says saves cannot currently transfer between PS4 or PS5 versions and the PC versions. You should expect to begin a separate save on your computer, even when the PC port contains the same campaign and content. This matters most for long games: finishing a title on console does not create a ready-to-use PC save file.
Do you need a PS5?
Not for a game that has an officially released PC port. You can buy and play that Windows version without owning a PlayStation console. You would still need a PlayStation console for titles that remain console-only, for playing a game before its PC release, or for continuing an existing console save that cannot be transferred.
How Xbox first-party games work on PC
Windows releases are usually part of the launch plan
Xbox more often treats Windows PC as a launch platform alongside Xbox consoles. Xbox’s 2025 Developer_Direct showcased DOOM: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Ninja Gaiden 4 for Xbox and PC, with Play Anywhere support for the showcased games. The exact availability of future releases still depends on the individual title and region.

Xbox games can be distributed through the Xbox app and Windows Store, and some also appear on Steam. Check the store page before buying because the purchase account, included features, and cross-device rights depend on the storefront and whether the Play Anywhere badge is present.

Play Anywhere is the clearest one-purchase rule
Xbox Play Anywhere applies to eligible digital games marked with the Play Anywhere badge. Xbox’s official description says: “Games that are XBOX Play Anywhere play on XBOX console, PC and supported gaming handhelds at no additional cost.” The longer rule is that a digital Play Anywhere game bought through the Xbox Store or Windows Store is playable on an Xbox console, a Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC, and supported gaming handhelds without buying a second copy.
For an eligible title, the entitlement is more than a second download. Saves, add-ons, and achievements carry across the supported Xbox and PC versions when you use the same Microsoft account. That makes Play Anywhere the closest equivalent to a unified console-and-PC library.
Not every Xbox PC purchase has the same entitlement
Do not infer Play Anywhere rights solely from a game being published by Xbox. Look for the badge on the current digital listing. A game sold on Steam may have its own Steam license and account requirements, while an Xbox Store or Windows Store purchase may be the one connected to Play Anywhere. If cross-buy and cross-save are important, verify those labels before checkout rather than relying on the publisher name.
Game Pass and cloud gaming are additional routes
Some Xbox first-party games can be accessed through Game Pass on PC or streamed through Xbox cloud gaming, subject to the plan, device, network, and regional availability in effect when you play. A subscription is access to the catalog under its terms; it is not automatically the same as owning a permanent PC license. Games can leave a catalog, and cloud features can vary by country and supported device.

Older Xbox games are beginning to reach PC through backward compatibility
On July 22, 2026, Xbox announced an early-release backward-compatibility program for PC. The initial release covered four original Xbox games in supported regions. Xbox said eligible digital console licenses carry over, and the games are included with Game Pass. This is a separate pathway from a modern Windows port: it uses a backward-compatibility program and is limited to the games, regions, and release stage Xbox identifies.
Xbox executive Jason Ronald summarized the broader goal with the statement, “Your library is more than just a collection of games.” In practical terms, that means checking whether a particular classic game is included in the current PC backward-compatibility list rather than assuming the entire original Xbox catalog works on Windows.
PlayStation and Xbox PC access compared
| Question | PlayStation first-party | Xbox first-party |
|---|---|---|
| PC strategy | Individual PC ports released title by title | Windows releases plus Play Anywhere, Game Pass, cloud, and backward-compatibility programs |
| Buying rule | PC and console editions are separate products | Eligible digital Play Anywhere games are one purchase across Xbox and Windows PC |
| Saves | No current PS4/PS5-to-PC transfer, according to Sony | Play Anywhere carries saves, add-ons, and achievements across supported devices |
| Stores and apps | Steam and Epic Games are listed PC retailers | Xbox app and Windows Store; some titles also appear on Steam |
| Input | Mouse and keyboard plus controllers; wired DualSense support is documented | Mouse and keyboard or controller, depending on the title |
How to decide what to buy
If you already own the PlayStation version
- Search for the exact game title in the current Steam and Epic Games listings.
- Confirm that the listing is an official PC edition and check whether it is a different edition or remaster.
- Budget for a separate purchase; your PS4 or PS5 license normally does not unlock it.
- Plan to start a new PC save because console saves cannot currently be transferred.
- Read the developer’s system requirements and check features such as ultrawide support, frame-rate targets, and required online services on the PC listing.
If you already own the Xbox version
- Open the game’s Xbox or Windows Store listing while signed into the Microsoft account that owns it.
- Look specifically for the Xbox Play Anywhere badge.
- If the badge is present and the purchase is digital through the Xbox Store or Windows Store, install the Windows version without buying it again.
- Sign into the same account on PC so your eligible save, add-ons, and achievements can synchronize.
- If there is no badge, check whether the game is available through PC Game Pass, cloud gaming, or a separate PC storefront license.
If you are choosing between a console and a gaming PC
A PC gives you access to PlayStation’s released ports and a large portion of Xbox’s current catalog, but it does not guarantee every PlayStation game or every Xbox classic. Choose a console when you need immediate access to a console-only PlayStation release, want to play before a possible PC port, or prefer a fixed hardware target. Choose PC when you value adjustable graphics settings, mouse-and-keyboard input, upgradeable hardware, and the Xbox Windows ecosystem.

Controllers, keyboard and mouse support
A controller is optional for many PC games. PlayStation documents mouse-and-keyboard support on PC and wired DualSense support. Wireless operation and advanced DualSense features can vary by title, operating system, connection method, and whether the game implements those features. A DualSense controller can therefore be useful for games that support its feature set, but it is not a universal requirement for playing PlayStation ports.

Common problems and how to avoid them
“I bought the console version, so why is the PC version locked?”
That is expected for PlayStation releases because Sony sells the editions separately. For Xbox, verify the Play Anywhere badge and the store where you made the purchase. A standard console license or a purchase on a different storefront may not include a Windows entitlement.
“My save is missing on PC.”
PlayStation saves do not currently transfer from PS4 or PS5 to PC. On Xbox, confirm that the title supports Play Anywhere, that you are using the same Microsoft account, and that the PC has completed synchronization. A Steam version may use a different account and save system from an Xbox Store version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“The game is listed for PC, but I cannot install it.”
Check the Windows version requirement, available storage, graphics hardware, and region. Availability, release timing, subscription inclusion, and cloud support can change. Use the current store listing and the developer’s system requirements rather than an older announcement.
“My controller works, but special features do not.”
Basic input compatibility does not guarantee advanced features. For DualSense, try a wired connection first because Sony documents wired PC support, then check the game’s own feature notes for wireless operation, haptics, adaptive triggers, or other enhancements.
“Can I assume an older Xbox game works on PC?”
No. The July 2026 backward-compatibility announcement covered four original Xbox games in supported regions at early release. Confirm that the exact game appears in the current PC backward-compatibility program and that your digital license or subscription qualifies.
What to verify before every purchase
- The exact PC edition and release status.
- The storefront and account that will own the license.
- Whether an Xbox title displays the Play Anywhere badge.
- Whether your region supports the listed game, subscription, cloud feature, or backward-compatibility release.
- Windows version, processor, memory, graphics, storage, and network requirements.
- Save-transfer rules and whether cross-progression is explicitly supported.
- Controller requirements and whether advanced features work wired, wirelessly, or only in certain games.
The short version is straightforward: PlayStation games reach PC through individual ports that you usually buy separately, while Xbox is built around simultaneous Windows releases and cross-device services. Check the title-level listing every time, because the platform label alone does not determine your purchase rights, save compatibility, or release date.
