That model has no optical drive, so it cannot accept or read a physical PS5 or PS4 game disc. You can play games bought from the PlayStation Store, but a disc-based game requires a PS5 with disc hardware.
There is one important exception: Sony sells a detachable Disc Drive for later slim Digital Edition consoles. It is listed for the CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 model groups, while Sony’s setup documentation refers to the compatible CFI-2000/7000 grouping. Check the model number on the console before buying the accessory; it is not an upgrade for the launch 2020 Digital Edition.

| Console or setup | Physical PS5/PS4 discs | Digital games | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 Digital Edition | No | Yes | It has no optical drive. Sony’s current detachable-drive instructions do not list this launch model as compatible. |
| PS5 Digital Edition slim, CFI-2000/CFI-2100 | Yes, after adding Sony’s Disc Drive | Yes | The drive is sold separately and must be paired over the internet during setup. |

Why the original Digital Edition cannot play a disc
The launch PS5 Digital Edition was designed without an optical mechanism or a disc slot. Sony’s PlayStation FAQ states: “The PS5 Digital Edition console does not feature a disc drive.” That is a hardware limitation, not a software setting that can be enabled later.

Sony’s cited solution is its purpose-built detachable Disc Drive for specified slim model groups. Without compatible disc hardware, buy the game digitally or use a console that includes a drive.
#1 Best Overall
- From Jan. 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available for purchase on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before Jan. 2028 can continue to be played on this device.
- This product is only for PS5 Digital Edition consoles (CFI-2000 model group – slim) or PS5 Pro Consoles
- Drive will play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs, Blu-ray discs and DVDs
- Internet connection is required to pair Disc Drive and PS5 Digital Edition Console upon setup.
What digital ownership does allow
Digital PS5 games and digital PS4 purchases can be downloaded to any PS5 Digital Edition after you sign in to the account that owns them. A physical license is different: the disc itself is the entitlement check, so the console must be able to read it whenever you launch the game.
Which Digital Edition models can take Sony’s Disc Drive?
Sony’s Disc Drive product information identifies the slim CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition model groups. The installation guide describes compatibility using the CFI-2000/7000 grouping. These labels refer to model families printed on the console and its packaging, not to the name “Digital Edition” alone.
Look for the CFI model number before ordering. If your console is the original, larger launch Digital Edition, it is not listed in the current detachable-drive instructions. Do not assume that an accessory designed for a slim chassis will fit an older shell.
How to identify the right model
- Find the model number on the console’s label or original box; it begins with “CFI-”.
- Match that number to Sony’s compatibility listing for the Disc Drive, specifically the CFI-2000/CFI-2100 slim groups and the grouping used in the setup guide.
- If the number is not one of the listed groups, treat the drive as incompatible rather than relying on appearance or a retailer description.
What the detachable drive can play
When installed on a compatible slim Digital Edition, Sony’s Disc Drive adds the same broad media functions expected from a disc-equipped PS5:
| Disc type | Support | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 game discs | Yes | The drive must be installed and paired with the console. |
| Supported PS4 game discs | Yes | Compatibility is limited to PS4 titles that run on PS5; the disc is still required to launch. |
| 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray | Yes | Playback uses the installed Disc Drive. |
| Blu-ray | Yes | Playback uses the installed Disc Drive. |
| DVD | Yes | Playback uses the installed Disc Drive. |
Sony’s product page also says that discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. That is a statement about the product page’s current policy wording, not a promise that every future release, format or service will remain unchanged; check Sony’s current documentation for later products.
How to add the drive to a compatible slim Digital Edition
Use Sony’s supplied parts and follow the model-specific guide. The process is mechanical, but forcing a cover or fitting the wrong feet can damage the console.
- Power down completely. Turn off the PS5 from the control center, wait for the indicators to stop, then unplug the power cable and all other cables.
- Prepare a safe work surface. Place the slim console on a stable, clean surface. Keep the original cover and short feet; you will need them if you later remove the drive.
- Remove the slim model’s cover. Follow the guide’s release points rather than prying at random edges. The drive is designed for the slim chassis, not the launch Digital Edition.
- Remove the short feet. The accessory uses the supplied long feet so the console sits level after installation.
- Align and click in the Disc Drive. Position the drive against the console’s connector and shell guides, then press it into place until it is seated. Do not connect a generic USB optical drive; it is not Sony’s supported solution.
- Fit the replacement cover and long feet. Check that the cover is flush and that all feet are secure before reconnecting cables.
- Reconnect and start the PS5. Attach power, HDMI and network equipment, then turn on the console.
- Pair the drive online. An internet connection is required during setup so the console can pair the Disc Drive. Complete the on-screen process before inserting a game.
- Test with a supported disc. Insert a PS5, supported PS4, Blu-ray, DVD or 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray disc and wait for the console to recognize it.
Store the removed cover and short feet together with the original packaging. If you remove the accessory later, those parts restore the Digital Edition’s original configuration.

Not without compatible disc hardware. Sony reports that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games are playable on PS5, based on Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2020 figure, but that backward-compatibility statistic does not turn a physical license into a digital one. A PS4 Blu-ray disc still needs a drive.

On an original Digital Edition, use a digital purchase instead. On a compatible slim Digital Edition with the Disc Drive installed and paired, insert the PS4 disc to install and launch the supported title; keep the disc in the drive whenever the game verifies ownership.

Some PS4 games offer a PS5 version or upgrade, but the route depends on how you own the game. Sony says a physical-disc owner needs a PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive to follow a disc-based upgrade path where that offer exists. A Digital Edition without a drive cannot read the qualifying PS4 disc and cannot use it as the ownership check.
If the upgrade is available for your disc, the usual requirement remains that the disc be inserted when you play the PS5 version. The exact offer, price and eligibility are set by the publisher and can vary by title or region, so check the game’s current store listing rather than assuming every PS4 disc includes a free upgrade.
Save data is a separate question
Having the disc or buying the digital version does not guarantee that your save transfers between PS4 and PS5 versions. Sony identifies cross-generation save support as a developer decision. Check the individual game’s instructions for cloud-save, USB-transfer or in-game migration steps before deleting the PS4 installation.
Choosing between a drive-equipped PS5 and a Digital Edition
| Choose this setup | It makes sense when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Original Digital Edition | Your library is entirely digital and you do not need disc movies or used physical games. | Physical PS5 and PS4 discs cannot be used, and the current detachable-drive instructions do not cover this model. |
| Compatible slim Digital Edition plus Disc Drive | You already own the listed slim model and want physical games or optical movie playback. | You pay separately for the accessory, must install it correctly and need internet access for pairing. |
| PS5 with built-in Ultra HD Blu-ray drive | You want disc support immediately, regularly buy physical games, or need a physical-disc PS4-to-PS5 upgrade path. | The drive is built in, so you cannot later remove that hardware to create a purely digital configuration. |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing “Digital Edition” with one universal chassis: the launch and slim consoles are different. Verify the CFI model group first.
- Buying a generic USB disc drive: the PS5 does not gain game-disc support from an ordinary computer optical drive. Sony’s supported option is the detachable Disc Drive made for compatible slim consoles.
- Expecting a disc to become a digital license: copying or installing files does not remove the need for the disc-based ownership check.
- Skipping internet setup: the detachable drive must be paired online during installation. Complete that step before troubleshooting game discs.
- Discarding the original feet and cover: retain them in case you remove the drive or return the console to its original configuration.
- Assuming every PS4 title works: Sony’s more-than-99-percent figure is a broad 2020 compatibility report, not a guarantee for every individual game or accessory feature.
- Assuming every physical game has the same upgrade terms: upgrade availability and pricing are title- and publisher-dependent.
Troubleshooting after installation
The console does not recognize the drive
- Turn the PS5 off, unplug it and reseat the drive and replacement cover.
- Confirm that the CFI model is one of the compatible slim groups.
- Reconnect to the internet and complete the pairing process shown during setup.
- If the drive still does not appear, remove the disc and test again after a full restart; persistent failure points to a fit, connector or hardware problem requiring Sony support.
A PS4 disc installs but the game will not start
- Confirm that the title is supported on PS5.
- Leave the disc inserted; installation alone does not replace the ownership check.
- Check whether the game’s PS5 upgrade has separate eligibility or purchase conditions.
The PS5 upgrade is unavailable
Verify that you are using a PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive for a physical-disc upgrade path. A physical PS4 disc cannot authorize that path on a Digital Edition that has no compatible drive.
Quick Recap
What to check before buying the accessory

- Make sure you can provide an internet connection during first-time pairing.
- Decide whether you need PS5 discs, supported PS4 discs, movie discs, or all three.
- Keep the original cover and feet after installation.
