Can You Play PAX Demos on Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Other Handhelds?

Usually, yes—but there is no universal “PAX demo” compatibility guarantee. A public Steam demo is generally the simplest option on Steam Deck, while a standard Windows build usually launches more directly on a ROG Ally or another Windows handheld. The deciding factors are the specific demo build, its launcher and account requirements, controller support, anti-cheat, online checks, and the handheld’s available performance.

Why PAX demos do not have one compatibility answer

A PAX demo is not a standardized platform release. Developers can submit a separate demo app or event build, and Steamworks documentation treats demos as distinct app builds and store pages. A particular PAX version may be publicly downloadable from Steam, distributed as a non-Steam executable, kept private, or supplied only on computers at the booth.

That distribution choice determines what you can test at home. A public Steam demo can be installed like any other game. A downloadable Windows executable may need to be added manually to Steam on a Deck. A booth-only build cannot be installed unless the developer later releases it.

Even when the underlying game supports a handheld, the event build may use a different launcher, middleware package, graphics preset, controller map, or network service. Treat the exact PAX build—not the game’s marketing platform list—as the thing you must verify.

Steam Deck: Proton makes many Windows demos possible, not automatic

Steam Deck runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system. Windows games are commonly run through Proton, which Valve describes as “a Windows compatibility layer.” Proton can run many Windows games without requiring developers to create a separate Linux port, but it cannot correct every issue in a custom demo.

What the Deck compatibility labels mean

Label What it tells you What it does not guarantee for a PAX demo
Verified Valve’s review found the title meets its checks for input, display, seamlessness and system support, including Proton and required middleware. A separate event build, launcher, account flow or anti-cheat configuration may still fail.
Playable The game runs, but may require manual settings, an on-screen keyboard, a community layout or other adjustments. That the PAX build will expose the same menus or use the same controls.
Unsupported Valve’s review found a significant compatibility problem for Deck. That every version is impossible; a developer could release a different build, but you should not rely on it without testing.
Unknown Valve has not completed its review. It is not an indication that the demo works, and it is not an indication that it fails.

A rating applies to the specific Steam app Valve reviewed. If the PAX demo is a separate app ID or a private executable, the game’s full-release rating is useful background rather than proof.

Installing a public Steam demo

  1. Open the game’s official event page or Steam store page and confirm that the downloadable item is the PAX or event demo, not only the full game’s store listing.
  2. On the Deck, select Install and let Steam download the demo to internal storage or a suitably fast microSD card.
  3. Before the event, launch it in the same power profile and display resolution you expect to use. Check the compatibility label, controller prompts, launcher behavior and any notes about online accounts or anti-cheat.
  4. Play long enough to reach the menus and a representative section. A demo that opens successfully can still fail when it changes scenes, connects to a service or loads a shader-heavy area.

Adding a non-Steam PAX executable

Valve’s Steam Deck FAQ confirms: “Yes, you can run non-Steam games through Proton.” The process is more experimental because Steam does not provide a store-page compatibility review for an arbitrary executable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Switch to Desktop Mode from the Deck’s power menu.
  2. Obtain the demo from the developer’s official download location and place its files in a folder you can access from both Desktop Mode and Game Mode. Avoid running unknown executables from unofficial mirrors.
  3. Open the Steam desktop client, choose Add a Game, then Add a Non-Steam Game. Browse to the demo’s launcher or executable and add it.
  4. In your Steam Library, open the new entry’s Properties, select Compatibility, enable the option to force a compatibility tool, and try an installed Proton version. If one version fails, test another rather than changing several settings at once.
  5. Return to Game Mode, launch the shortcut, and verify that the game sees the Deck’s controls. Some launchers require a touchscreen tap, an on-screen keyboard or a different controller layout before the game itself accepts input.

Title-specific fixes may involve a launch option, a missing runtime, a different Proton build or a launcher workaround. Because a non-Steam app has no Valve review, record which change solved the problem and keep a backup of the original settings.

ROG Ally and other Windows handhelds

ROG Ally devices run Windows 11. ASUS positions the handheld as compatible with Steam, the EA App, Epic Games and Xbox Game Pass, so a conventional Windows PAX build normally avoids the Linux-to-Windows translation layer required on Deck. You still need to meet the demo’s hardware and software requirements, and a launcher or account service can remain a blocker.

Installing and testing a Windows demo

  1. Identify whether the developer provides a Windows installer, a portable folder or a launcher-specific download. Use the official event or game page for the exact build.
  2. Install it to internal storage or a fast, sufficiently spacious card. Keep Windows, the device firmware and the relevant graphics driver current before testing.
  3. Set the handheld to the power mode you can actually use. A demo that runs only at a high-wattage setting may drain the battery quickly or perform differently away from a charger.
  4. Use the device’s built-in controls first. If the demo expects an Xbox-style controller, switch from touch or mouse emulation and confirm that every menu action has a button mapping.
  5. Launch the demo offline once if possible, then online with the required account. This reveals whether an activation, entitlement, always-online check or service login is mandatory.

Windows removes one compatibility layer; it does not make a demo immune to bad scaling, unreadable text, a mouse-only launcher, missing controller bindings, aggressive anti-cheat or a GPU requirement above the handheld’s capability.

What to check before depending on a handheld

Distribution and ownership

Demo format Typical setup Main risk
Public Steam demo Install from Steam and follow the Deck compatibility information. The event build may differ from the reviewed app or require an account service.
Downloadable non-Steam build Add the executable to Steam on Deck, or run it directly in Windows. No Valve compatibility review; launcher and runtime problems are common.
Booth-only executable Playable only on the event’s supplied computer unless the developer later releases it. You cannot legitimately install it at home merely because you know the game’s name.

Controls and interface

  • Confirm that the title supports a gamepad throughout menus, tutorials and pause screens, not only during gameplay.
  • Read text at the handheld’s native resolution and screen size. Small launcher prompts, subtitles or tooltips can make an otherwise functional demo impractical.
  • Test sleep and resume. A demo that loses input focus or requires a restart after waking is a poor choice for a short booth session.

Performance and storage

Compare the demo’s stated CPU, GPU, RAM and storage requirements with the handheld’s actual power mode, not just its model name. Event builds sometimes use high-resolution assets or default settings intended for a desktop. Watch for sustained frame pacing, shader-compilation stutter, fan noise and battery drain during a full run. Leave additional storage for shader caches, updates and the launcher itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Network, accounts and anti-cheat

An offline-capable game can still have an online launcher. Test account sign-in, entitlement checks and any always-online requirement before travel. Anti-cheat software may support Windows but not Proton, or it may be configured differently in a short-lived demo app. If a demo fails at authentication or anti-cheat initialization, changing graphics settings will not solve the underlying problem.

Decision guide: which handheld is the safer choice?

Choose Steam Deck when

  • The demo is a public Steam app with a favorable Deck label and no unusual launcher or anti-cheat dependency.
  • You are willing to test Proton and, for non-Steam builds, troubleshoot manually.
  • You value SteamOS sleep/resume and a console-style interface over maximum Windows launcher compatibility.

Choose a Windows handheld when

  • The developer supplies only a standard Windows executable or requires a launcher that has no reliable Proton support.
  • The demo depends on Game Pass, a Windows-only account flow or middleware known to work on Windows.
  • You can provide the power, storage and controller configuration the build expects.

Bring a fallback when

  • The demo is booth-only, marked Unknown, or distributed through an untested launcher.
  • The event is important enough that a single compatibility failure would ruin your plan.
  • You can use a Windows laptop, a second handheld, or a remote-play/cloud option that already has the title installed.

No authoritative source publishes a percentage of PAX demos that work on handheld PCs. Compatibility is too dependent on each developer’s build and distribution method for a meaningful universal success rate.

Troubleshooting common failures

The demo will not start on Steam Deck

  • Confirm that you added the actual game executable, not only an installer that exits after installation.
  • Try another Proton version from the shortcut’s Compatibility settings.
  • Check whether the launcher requires a network login or a Windows component unavailable under Proton.
  • Verify that the demo files are complete and that the executable has not been blocked by a permissions or path issue.

The game starts but controls do not work

  • Enable a standard gamepad layout and restart the demo after the controller is active.
  • Use the touchscreen or on-screen keyboard for a launcher that expects mouse input, then check in-game bindings.
  • Disconnect extra Bluetooth devices that may have become the first controller.

The picture is cropped or text is unreadable

  • Set the game to the handheld’s native aspect ratio and try borderless or windowed mode.
  • Lower resolution only after confirming that the interface scales correctly; some demos render text at a fixed size.
  • Increase in-game UI or subtitle size where available and test at the exact viewing distance you will use.

Performance deteriorates after a few minutes

  • Check whether the device switched power modes or reached a thermal limit.
  • Lower demanding settings such as shadows, effects and resolution, then retest a repeatable scene.
  • Keep the device plugged in for a sustained demonstration, while recognizing that a booth or travel setup may not provide that option.

A practical pre-event checklist

  1. Find the official game or event page and classify the build as a Steam app, non-Steam download or booth-only executable.
  2. On Deck, read the compatibility label and every warning about launchers, anti-cheat, accounts and online access.
  3. Install at least several days early, update the device, and test controls, text size, frame pacing and sleep/resume.
  4. For a non-Steam build, add it from Desktop Mode, select a Proton version and document any working settings.
  5. On a Windows handheld, install the Windows build, compare its requirements with the available power mode and test the required launcher.
  6. Pack a charger and, when the demo is important or booth-only, keep a laptop, second handheld or other fallback ready.
