What “playing an older game” can mean
There are several distinct ways to play a game from an older generation. They are not interchangeable, and a console supporting one route does not mean it supports the others.

- Original media: inserting the original disc or cartridge.
- Existing digital license: downloading a game you already bought digitally, where the current console supports it and the license is available to your account.
- New edition: buying a current-console release, remaster, or remake separately.
- Subscription catalog: accessing a selected game while it is included in a subscription and available for your plan and region.
- Streaming: playing a game delivered over the internet rather than running the original disc on the console.
For any game you care about, confirm which of these routes actually applies before you spend money.

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?
For the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 titles, yes: Sony says they are playable on PS5. A small number may show errors or lose some functionality, and performance or features can differ from playing on a PS4. Sony recommends trying a game before purchasing add-ons. Check Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance for details.
If you own the PS4 disc
You need a PS5 model with a disc drive. A disc cannot be used on a digital-only PS5. Check the model carefully, as well as the game’s compatibility, before relying on your disc copy.
If you own the digital version
Check the game’s PlayStation Store listing and your account’s library for the PS5 you plan to use. A digital license is not the same as a disc, and the disc-drive requirement does not apply to a digital purchase.

If the game uses PS VR
Compatibility alone may not be enough: PS VR games played through PS5 backward compatibility require the supported VR headset and PS4 camera, along with the camera adapter. Sony recommends a DualShock 4 for the best PS VR experience. Check the specific game and accessory requirements on Sony’s compatibility page.
Can PS5 play PS3, PS2, or original PlayStation discs?
PS5 does not support PS3 discs. A PlayStation Plus Premium streaming option for selected PS3 games is a separate way to access some titles in select markets; streaming does not make a PS3 disc playable. Sony’s PlayStation Plus guide also describes selected original PlayStation, PS2, PSP, PS4, and PS5 games available to stream, along with downloadable original PlayStation, PSP, and PS4 titles and downloadable PS2 or PS3 remasters and remakes. These options depend on the title, plan, and market—not every older game is included. Will Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but not every title is fully supported. Nintendo says some games are unsupported or have compatibility issues, and directs players to its title-specific information. There is no single overall compatibility percentage in Nintendo’s guidance. Check the exact game in Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility overview before buying or transferring on the assumption it will work.

Both formats are within the compatibility guidance, but the game must still be supported. Confirm compatibility for the specific title and, for a physical copy, make sure you have the required game card and a console configuration that can use it.
Upgrades and accessories
Some games have Switch 2 upgrade packs or updated performance options; those are distinct from basic compatibility and may have separate requirements. Nintendo also notes that some older accessories cannot attach to or work with Joy-Con 2. Original Switch Joy-Con may pair wirelessly for supported uses, but check the accessory and game details in Nintendo’s compatibility information.
How to play older Nintendo games on Switch 2
For games from systems older than Nintendo Switch, the usual route is not inserting an original cartridge. Nintendo Switch Online offers selected classic games through its Nintendo Classics libraries. The current UK catalog page lists NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy, and GameCube libraries. Access depends on the membership tier, system, title, and availability; some libraries are associated with the Expansion Pack, and Switch 2-specific availability may differ. Check these details before buying a console or subscription
- Identify the exact game and original system. “PlayStation game” or “Nintendo game” is too broad to establish compatibility.
- Identify what you own. Note whether it is a disc, cartridge, or digital license—or whether you need a new purchase.
- Check the official compatibility entry. Look up the specific title, not just the console’s general backward-compatibility statement.
- Confirm the hardware and format requirements. For PS4 discs, choose a PS5 with a disc drive. For VR or Nintendo accessories, check the required peripherals and supported configuration.
- If direct play is unavailable, check alternatives in your country. Look for a separately sold current-generation edition, remaster, remake, subscription listing, or streaming option. Verify the current plan and title availability before subscribing.
