Yes. No Man’s Sky supports solo play without an internet connection. You can explore planets, survive hazards, gather resources, craft, build and advance a solo save offline, assuming the game is installed and your platform allows it to launch without a connection. Internet access is required for features built around other players or shared services, including online multiplayer, cross-platform sessions, multiplayer missions and community-wide participation.
The boundary is not identical to the in-game multiplayer switch. Turning multiplayer off limits player interaction, but it does not necessarily disconnect every online service. A genuinely offline session means the game has no network connection available to those services.

What you can do offline
The core survival-and-exploration loop is suitable for a private, disconnected session. You can investigate planets, mine materials, manage hazards, manufacture equipment, construct bases and continue progressing through a solo save. These activities do not inherently require another Traveller to be present.

Hello Games’ strongest recent confirmation comes from its The Swarm 6.43 patch notes, dated June 1, 2026. The notes describe fixes for problems that occurred when the Swarm expedition was “started offline” and when it was played offline. That wording is direct evidence that the game recognizes and supports an offline play state, including an expedition scenario.

What offline does not mean
Offline does not mean that every feature is stored locally or that every event objective is guaranteed to work without a connection. Systems designed to exchange information with the wider player community can be unavailable, incomplete or unable to submit progress while disconnected. The reviewed official material does not provide a single, current, all-platform chart covering every service.
Basic prerequisites
You need a complete installation and a platform account or entitlement that permits the game to start. Requirements for installation, first launch, authentication and offline launcher mode vary by platform and were not comprehensively specified in the official material cited here. If your platform or launcher asks for an online check, complete that requirement before attempting a disconnected session; do not assume that one platform’s policy applies to another.
Features that require an internet connection
These features depend on communication with other players or with Hello Games’ shared services. They are separate from the local solo systems described above.
Meeting other Travellers
Seeing other players in the same universe, joining their sessions or inviting them to yours requires connectivity. With no network connection, the game cannot establish those player-to-player links.

Online multiplayer missions
Missions designed for cooperative play are an online feature. You can still undertake the ordinary solo activities available in your save, but a mission that requires another player or an online session cannot be completed in its intended multiplayer form while disconnected.
Cross-platform play
Hello Games’ update material describes cross-platform play as part of the connected experience. Cross-platform sessions therefore need internet access, and the relevant platform accounts and services must also be available.
Shared discoveries
The game has a discovery system in which findings are shared with other players. Offline, you should treat that shared database as unavailable or potentially stale rather than as a guaranteed local feature. The official sources reviewed do not establish whether discoveries made while disconnected are queued for upload, exactly when they would be transmitted after reconnection, or how a naming conflict would be resolved. Do not rely on automatic synchronization unless a current, platform-specific source confirms it.

Community-wide expedition participation
Expeditions use milestones and shared participation. Community progress and other networked elements require a connection to exchange information with the wider player base. An expedition can have an offline-compatible portion, but that does not prove that every milestone, reward condition or community objective can be completed offline.

Multiplayer off is different from being offline
The multiplayer setting controls whether other players can interact with your session. A device can remain connected to the internet while multiplayer is disabled, allowing the game to use other online services even though no Travellers appear. Conversely, a device with no connection cannot use online services regardless of how the multiplayer setting is configured.
| Situation | Other players | Online services | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connected with multiplayer enabled | Available, subject to platform and account conditions | Available | Online multiplayer, cross-platform interaction and shared systems can operate. |
| Connected with multiplayer disabled | Blocked by the setting | May still be available | This is a private session, not necessarily a fully disconnected one. |
| No network connection | Unavailable | Unavailable | Solo exploration and local progression can continue; shared services cannot be contacted. |
This distinction matters when troubleshooting. If you want privacy but still want online services, disable multiplayer while remaining connected. If you want to test a true offline session, disconnect the platform from the network as well.
Can Expeditions be played offline?
There is official evidence for an offline expedition case, but it is narrower than a blanket guarantee. In the June 1, 2026 The Swarm 6.43 notes, Hello Games wrote: “Fixed an issue that could lead to incorrect colours displaying for the Purge/Restore/Sabotage milestones if the Swarm expedition was started offline.” The same notes say: “Fixed an issue that prevented interaction with the Prismatic Core if playing the Swarm expedition offline.”
Those fixes would make no sense unless the developers recognized offline expedition play as a supported scenario. They also show why event-by-event caution is necessary: the notes address particular bugs, not every possible milestone or reward.

What to check before starting an expedition offline
- Confirm that the expedition is still within its availability window. Expeditions are time-limited.
- Read the event’s milestone descriptions for objectives that mention other players, shared progress or community participation.
- Start with a connected session if your platform requires an entitlement or event data check, then test the game’s offline behavior before committing to a long run.
- Keep expectations conservative about rewards and discovery submission. The cited sources do not promise that all event data will upload later.
Hello Games’ description of Expedition Thirteen, Adrift, called it an opportunity to experience “for the first time, being truly alone in No Man’s Sky.” That is promotional language about that expedition’s solitary theme, not a technical promise that every expedition or every objective works without a network connection.
Nintendo Switch 2 requirements
Nintendo’s listing for the Switch 2 edition specifies one local player and one to four online players. It says internet is required for online play and that a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play and cloud saves.
| Switch 2 listing item | Requirement or specification | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Local play | 1 local player | Supports a solo local session; the listing does not say that internet is required for this local mode. |
| Online play | 1–4 online players | Internet connection required. |
| Online membership | Paid Nintendo Switch Online membership | Required by Nintendo for online play. |
| Cloud saves | Paid Nintendo Switch Online membership | Applies to Nintendo’s cloud-save service, not the game’s local save on the console. |
Keep these requirements specific to Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing. They should not be generalized to PC, PlayStation, Xbox or another Nintendo model without a matching platform statement.

- Install and update the game while connected. Make sure the title, its current patch and any content needed for the save or expedition are present before disconnecting.
- Verify that your save opens normally. Start the game while connected and confirm that your intended save is visible. If a platform or launcher has an offline mode, enable it according to that platform’s own instructions.
- Disconnect the network. Turn off the console or PC’s network connection, or otherwise place the platform in its approved offline mode. Do not confuse this with merely disabling multiplayer inside the game.
- Launch the game again. If the platform refuses to start, record the exact message. That indicates a platform, launcher or entitlement rule, not proof that the game’s core solo systems require internet everywhere.
- Load or create a solo save. Test a short trip: land, gather a resource, craft an item and save. These actions exercise local progression without depending on another player.
- Test only the online-dependent features you expect to lose. Other Travellers, cross-platform sessions, multiplayer missions and shared community services should be treated as unavailable while disconnected.
- Reconnect before relying on shared results. Do not assume that discoveries or expedition milestones made offline have been uploaded until the game or a current platform-specific support page explicitly confirms their status.
What happens when you reconnect?
Reconnection restores access to services that need a network, but the available official material does not define a universal synchronization sequence. In particular, it does not say whether every offline discovery is cached, whether all expedition progress is submitted automatically, or how conflicts are handled when another player has used the same name.
For that reason, treat offline progress as local until you can verify the result after reconnecting. Make a local save before switching network states, then check the relevant expedition milestone or discovery screen rather than assuming that a successful reconnection has retroactively completed every online action.
Choosing the right mode
| Your priority | Best approach | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Private exploration with no network access | Disconnect the platform and play a solo save. | No other Travellers, multiplayer missions, cross-platform sessions or shared services. |
| Privacy while retaining online services | Stay connected and turn multiplayer off. | This blocks player interaction but is not a complete offline state. |
| Cooperative missions or cross-platform play | Stay connected and use the platform’s required online account or subscription. | Availability and subscription rules depend on the platform. |
| Community expedition participation | Play while connected unless the specific event confirms that an objective works offline. | Offline support may cover particular milestones without covering all community rewards. |
Common offline problems and sensible checks
The game will not launch without a connection
Check whether the platform or launcher requires an initial entitlement check, an offline-mode setting or a completed installation. These policies differ by platform, so a launch failure does not establish a universal internet requirement for No Man’s Sky.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →An expedition objective behaves differently offline
Compare the objective with the event’s description. The Swarm patch confirms fixes for specific offline milestones, not every objective. A community-dependent condition may remain unavailable until the game can contact the relevant service.
Your discovery is not visible to other players
That is expected while disconnected. After reconnecting, verify whether it appears in the shared system; the cited official material does not guarantee automatic upload or specify its timing.
You can play alone but cannot join a friend
Confirm that the network is active, multiplayer is enabled, the required platform service is signed in and the other player is using a compatible version and platform connection. A private or fully offline session cannot establish a multiplayer join.
Bottom line
You do not need internet for the central solo experience of No Man’s Sky. You do need connectivity for interaction with other players, online multiplayer missions, cross-platform play and shared community services. Expeditions deserve a narrower answer: Hello Games has documented offline expedition play and fixed offline-specific bugs, but that is not a promise that every event milestone or reward works disconnected. On Switch 2, Nintendo separately requires internet and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for online play and cloud saves; do not apply that policy to other platforms without evidence.
