Can You Play Nintendo Switch Sports Tennis Online With Friends?

Yes. Nintendo Switch Sports tennis supports online matches with friends through Play with Friends. Every player joining an internet session needs an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. Without that membership, Nintendo says Play Globally is limited to a trial competition against computer-controlled opponents rather than a friend session.

You will also need a supported setup: Nintendo recommends TV Mode on a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2, plus compatible Joy-Con controllers. Handheld Mode is not supported, and Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible.

How online tennis with friends works

Online friend play is organized from Nintendo Switch Sports’ Play with Friends option. This is separate from Play Globally, which is the game’s worldwide matchmaking option. Select Play with Friends when you want to arrange a session for people you know rather than enter the global competition.

The online requirement is tied to the Nintendo Switch Online service, not merely to owning the game or having an internet connection. Nintendo’s FAQ states that an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online. If the membership is absent or inactive, the available Play Globally trial uses computer competitors; it does not turn into unrestricted online play with friends.

What each player should have ready

  • A copy of Nintendo Switch Sports and a Nintendo account set up for online use.
  • An active Nintendo Switch Online membership for internet play.
  • A Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2 connected to a TV in TV Mode.
  • Compatible Joy-Con controllers. Supported controller types vary by sport, and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is not compatible.
  • A way to communicate, if your group wants voice chat.

The console and controller requirements matter because Nintendo Switch Sports is motion-oriented. A console can be connected to the internet and still fail to provide the expected tennis controls if the controller type or play mode is unsupported.

Step-by-step: start a friend tennis session

  1. Put each console in TV Mode. Nintendo does not support Handheld Mode for Nintendo Switch Sports. Use a TV with a Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2.
  2. Attach or pair compatible Joy-Con controllers. Do not use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller for this game. If a player has several controllers available, choose the Joy-Con setup supported for the sport rather than assuming every controller works.
  3. Open Nintendo Switch Sports. Start from the title screen on each console that will participate.
  4. Choose Play with Friends. This is the menu used to arrange a private session with friends over the internet.
  5. Have the other players join the friend session. Each participant should follow the game’s on-screen joining prompts from their own console.
  6. Select tennis and begin the match. Once the group is assembled, start the tennis activity from the friend session.

The exact people shown as available to join can depend on the accounts and friend connections configured on the consoles. If a friend does not appear, check the account being used and confirm that the person is entering through Play with Friends rather than Play Globally.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?

Yes, for internet friend play. Nintendo specifies that an active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for Nintendo Switch Sports online play. Treat “active” as an account-level prerequisite: a console being online does not substitute for the membership.

What happens without the membership?

Nintendo describes Play Globally without the membership as a trial competition against computer competitors. That provides a way to sample the worldwide mode, but it is not the same as inviting a friend into an online tennis match. If the goal is a remote match against a specific person, the membership requirement must be satisfied before setting up the session.

Membership check before troubleshooting

If Play with Friends does not work, verify the membership first, then return to the game’s friend-session menu. This avoids spending time changing controllers or display settings when the account cannot access online play in the first place.

Can you voice chat during friend matches?

Yes. Nintendo says voice chat is available in Play with Friends through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app. The app is therefore part of the communication setup for a typical friend session; starting a match alone does not automatically provide an in-game voice channel through the console.

Voice-chat requirements and limits

  • A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to use the smartphone app for this purpose.
  • Accounts belonging to children under 13 cannot use voice chat.
  • Nintendo Switch 2 supports chatting through GameChat, providing an additional option on that console.

For a mixed group, decide how everyone will communicate before starting the match. Players on original Nintendo Switch hardware can use the smartphone-app route described by Nintendo, while Nintendo Switch 2 players can use GameChat. Age restrictions still apply to the relevant account.

  • Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online

What hardware and play mode does tennis require?

TV Mode, not Handheld Mode

Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode on the standard Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2. A player who launches the game while relying on the built-in handheld screen should move the console to a TV setup instead of treating the missing handheld option as an online-service problem.

Compatible Joy-Con controllers

Use compatible Joy-Con controllers for tennis. Nintendo notes that supported controller types vary by sport, so the fact that a controller works in another Switch title does not establish that it is supported here. Nintendo also specifically says Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports.

For a group session, make the controller check before inviting everyone. It is easier to correct an unsupported controller while players are still at the title screen than after the room has been arranged.

Online friend play versus LAN Play

If the players are in the same place and can connect multiple consoles to one wired local network, Nintendo documents a separate LAN Play option. LAN Play is not the same path as a remote internet friend session: it is intended for consoles connected on a local wired network.

Aspect Play with Friends over the internet LAN Play
Where players are Players can be in different locations, using their internet connections. Consoles are connected to the same wired local network.
Subscription An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play. Nintendo’s LAN instructions describe the local-network connection; the instructions do not state a Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement for LAN Play.
How to enter Choose Play with Friends from the game’s title screen and arrange the friend session. Highlight Play with Friends, hold L and R, and simultaneously click and hold the Left Stick. The menu changes to LAN Play.
Room setup Players join the arranged friend session through the online menu. The host creates a room, the other players join it, and the host starts play with the group.
Voice chat Voice chat is available through the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app; Nintendo Switch 2 also supports GameChat. The LAN instructions do not specify a separate voice-chat method. Arrange communication separately if the group needs it.
Player capacity The supplied Nintendo online FAQ does not state a universal friend-session player limit for tennis. Up to four consoles can connect, with up to two players on each console where the sport allows it.

How to enter LAN Play

  1. Connect the participating consoles to the same wired local network.
  2. On the title screen, highlight Play with Friends.
  3. Hold the L and R buttons.
  4. While holding those buttons, click and hold the Left Stick at the same time.
  5. Confirm that the menu changes to LAN Play.
  6. Have the host create a room.
  7. Have the remaining players join the room.
  8. Let the host start play with the assembled group.

The “up to four consoles” figure applies to Nintendo’s LAN instructions. The “up to two players per console” condition is qualified by the sport: it applies where that sport supports two players on one console.

Troubleshooting common setup problems

Play with Friends is unavailable or will not start

  • Confirm that the account has an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Make sure players selected Play with Friends, not the Play Globally trial route.
  • Check that each console is using a Nintendo account able to access online play.

A player cannot control tennis correctly

  • Move the console out of Handheld Mode and use TV Mode.
  • Reconnect or pair compatible Joy-Con controllers.
  • Remove Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers from the setup; Nintendo does not list them as compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports.

Voice chat is not working

  • Use the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app for Play with Friends voice chat.
  • Check that the account using voice chat is not under 13, because Nintendo excludes accounts under 13 from voice chat.
  • On Nintendo Switch 2, consider GameChat as the console’s supported chatting option.
  • Remember that voice chat is a separate communication setup from joining the tennis match.

The group is together but wants to avoid internet play

Use LAN Play rather than the remote friend route. Connect the consoles to the same wired local network and follow the L-and-R-plus-Left-Stick shortcut to reveal the LAN Play menu. The host then creates the room and starts the session after everyone joins.

A practical pre-match checklist

  • Location: Decide whether players are remote or on one local wired network.
  • Mode: Use Play with Friends for internet sessions; reveal LAN Play for the documented local-network setup.
  • Membership: For internet play, confirm an active Nintendo Switch Online membership for the participating accounts.
  • Display: Use TV Mode; Handheld Mode is unsupported.
  • Controllers: Prepare compatible Joy-Con controllers and do not rely on Pro Controllers.
  • Chat: Set up the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app, or GameChat on Nintendo Switch 2, and account for the under-13 restriction.
  • Host: For LAN Play, choose one console to create the room and start the match.

Once those conditions are met, tennis with remote friends is a supported Nintendo Switch Sports activity rather than a workaround. The key distinction is choosing the correct session type: Play with Friends for internet matches, or LAN Play when multiple consoles share the same wired local network.
