Yes. You can play Nintendo Switch Sports with friends offline on one console: choose Play Locally and use compatible Joy-Con controllers for the sport you want to play. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online play, not identified by Nintendo as a requirement for Play Locally. If friends have separate consoles, Nintendo also supports local-network play, but that setup needs a wired router and Ethernet connections.
Choose the kind of multiplayer you mean
| How you play | Where players are | Network or membership |
|---|---|---|
| Play Locally | Together on one console | Nintendo’s FAQ does not list an online membership requirement for this mode. |
| LAN Play | On separate consoles connected to the same local network | Wired router and Ethernet connections; this is not same-console play. |
| Play with Friends online | At separate locations over the internet | An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. |
Play together offline on one console
Start Play Locally
Launch the game and choose Play Locally. Connect the controllers needed for your selected sport and number of players. Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, and Joy-Con used with the Leg Strap among supported configurations, depending on the sport. Pro Controllers are not compatible. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ for its controller and play-mode guidance.

Use a supported display and controller setup
Nintendo says the game does not support Handheld Mode and recommends TV Mode for the best play experience. Controller needs vary by sport, so do not assume every game supports the same number of players or the same Joy-Con arrangement. Nintendo’s cited FAQ does not provide a complete sport-by-sport local player-limit table.
Use LAN Play for friends on separate consoles
Nintendo documents LAN Play for up to four consoles, with up to two players per console and eight players total. Each console needs a copy of the game, a display, and a wired connection to the same router. The available sports depend on how many players have joined. Nintendo’s LAN Play instructions describe creating a room on one console and having the others join it.

What the LAN setup needs
- A copy of Nintendo Switch Sports on each console, physical or downloaded.
- Ethernet cables connecting the consoles to the same wired router.
- A USB LAN adapter if a console’s dock does not have a built-in LAN port.
- A network switch if the router does not have enough LAN ports.
Nintendo names the licensed HORI Dual USB PlayStand as an example accessory for connecting a USB LAN adapter when setting up LAN with a Switch Lite. That is a specific LAN configuration, not a requirement for ordinary Play Locally play.

Nintendo states: “An active Nintendo Switch Online membership is required to play Nintendo Switch Sports online.” This applies to playing online with friends, not to the offline, same-console Play Locally mode. Nintendo also says voice chat in Play with Friends uses the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app and requires membership; Nintendo Accounts belonging to children under 13 cannot use that voice chat. See the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ for these online-play details.
