1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYes—Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible Nintendo Switch games, including compatible Pokémon titles. Compatibility is checked one game at a time, however. Nintendo warns that some Switch software may be unsupported or only partly functional because Switch 2 hardware differs. Before buying a used cartridge, paying for a digital copy, or moving your library, look up the exact Pokémon title and edition in Nintendo’s current Switch-game compatibility checker.
What “compatible” means on Switch 2
Switch 2 supports Nintendo Switch software in both physical and digital form when Nintendo lists that software as compatible. That does not mean every Switch game automatically works. Nintendo evaluates titles individually and can classify a game as fully supported, partly functional, or unsupported. The result can also change as Nintendo completes testing or releases updates.

For a Pokémon game, compatibility is therefore a property of the specific release you own—not of the Pokémon brand as a whole. The physical cartridge, digital edition, required accessories, online functions and available updates can all matter. A game that launches may still have a feature limitation, so “it starts” is not the same as “every mode works exactly as it did on Switch.”

How to check a Pokémon game before you buy or migrate it
Use Nintendo’s official compatibility search as the final authority. Check before spending money because a retailer’s “Nintendo Switch” label does not by itself establish Switch 2 support.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Identify the exact title. Record the complete name, including subtitles such as Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!.
- Identify the edition you will use. Note whether you have a physical Nintendo Switch cartridge or a digital copy. If a product has multiple releases, search the precise edition shown on its box or eShop listing.
- Search Nintendo’s Switch-game compatibility checker. Enter the title and read the result and any notes. Nintendo says some games can have partial functionality or remain unsupported.
- Look for a Switch 2 update or upgrade listing. Nintendo says some Switch games receive free updates, while others can offer paid upgrades that add content or improve performance. Treat this as a separate question from basic compatibility.
- Verify online requirements. A title can be compatible for offline play while requiring a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online battles, trades or other network features. Check the game’s specific requirements rather than assuming every Pokémon mode has the same access rules.
Nintendo’s checker is the right place to repeat this process immediately before purchase or migration. Nintendo notes that support information may change as testing and software updates continue.
Pokémon compatibility status: what is documented and what is not
Nintendo has published an explicit cross-system statement for the Let’s Go games. The official material does not provide a complete, dated list in this article’s evidence for every Pokémon release, so other titles should not be described as fully compatible without checking their current entries.
| Pokémon release | What is established | What you should verify |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! | Nintendo explicitly documents play between Switch 2 and Switch copies, including local battles and trades. Pokémon HOME transfers are supported on both systems. | Check the live compatibility entry and the current online requirements before purchase. |
| Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! | Nintendo explicitly documents play between Switch 2 and Switch copies, including local battles and trades. Pokémon HOME transfers are supported on both systems. | Check the live compatibility entry and the current online requirements before purchase. |
| Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet | A definitive status is not established by the cited material here. | Search the exact game in Nintendo’s current checker; do not infer support from another Pokémon title. |
| Pokémon Legends: Arceus | A definitive status is not established by the cited material here. | Search the exact game in Nintendo’s current checker. |
| Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl | A definitive status is not established by the cited material here. | Search the exact game in Nintendo’s current checker. |
| Any other Nintendo Switch Pokémon game | Compatibility is title-specific and may include limitations. | Check physical or digital edition, notes about partial functionality, updates or upgrades, and online requirements. |
Will a Pokémon cartridge work in Switch 2?
A physical Nintendo Switch cartridge can be used in Switch 2 when Nintendo lists that particular game as compatible. Insert the cartridge into the Switch 2 system and launch it normally, then follow any update prompt that appears. The important qualification is the compatibility result: the fact that a cartridge fits or is recognized does not override a Nintendo warning about unsupported or partial functionality.

Keep the original cartridge available if you move between systems. Cartridge ownership is tied to having the cartridge, whereas a digital purchase is associated with the Nintendo Account that bought it. If the checker identifies an accessory or feature requirement, read that note before assuming every mode will work with the hardware you have.
How digital Pokémon games carry over
Nintendo says existing Nintendo Accounts, eShop access, virtual game cards and Nintendo Switch Online benefits carry across linked Switch 2 and Switch consoles, subject to the game’s compatibility. In practical terms, sign in with the Nintendo Account that owns the digital game, make the software available on the linked system through Nintendo’s virtual-game-card system, and then apply any required update.
Account access does not turn an incompatible title into a compatible one. It restores your entitlement and access to Nintendo’s digital ecosystem; the individual game still has to pass the compatibility check. If two people use different accounts, confirm which account purchased the game before attempting to load it on Switch 2.

Pokémon HOME, local trading and online play
Let’s Go local communication
Nintendo specifically states that players with Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee! can battle or trade with another player who has either copy of the game. Local communication can take place between nearby Switch 2 and Switch consoles, so both players do not need the same generation of hardware for that documented use case.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Online features
For the same Let’s Go example, Nintendo says online communication requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership. The membership requirement applies to online communication, not to the local nearby-console connection. Check the game’s current listing for any additional network conditions.
Pokémon HOME transfers
Nintendo states that Pokémon can transfer to and from Pokémon HOME on both Switch 2 and Switch for the documented Let’s Go support. HOME transfer support is a separate feature from game launch compatibility, so verify it for any other Pokémon title rather than assuming the same behavior.

Do Pokémon games need a paid Switch 2 upgrade?
Not automatically. Nintendo describes two kinds of post-launch support for Switch games: free updates and paid Switch 2 upgrades. A free update can add content or improve performance, while a paid upgrade can provide additional Switch 2 enhancements. The existence, price and contents of an upgrade are title-specific.
Do not buy an upgrade merely because you see one advertised. First establish that the base game is compatible, then read what the upgrade changes and whether the features matter to you. Conversely, do not assume that a game needs a paid upgrade simply because it runs on newer hardware. Nintendo’s compatibility entry is the place to determine whether an upgrade is offered and what is required.
The available official material does not establish a complete Pokémon-specific upgrade list. That means no reliable blanket rule can be given for Scarlet, Violet, Legends: Arceus or the other titles without checking their live entries.

What partial compatibility can mean
Nintendo’s warning about partial functionality matters when a game contains features that depend on hardware behavior, accessories or software services. A partially compatible title may launch and allow its main adventure while limiting a particular mode or peripheral-dependent feature. The exact limitation must come from the title’s compatibility notes; do not substitute a general assumption.
- Read every note attached to the game’s checker result, not just the headline status.
- Check whether an update is required before first launch.
- Confirm any stated accessory requirement before discarding or selling your original Switch equipment.
- Test the specific feature you care about—such as local trading or online communication—rather than testing only whether the game reaches its title screen.
A practical decision guide
| Your situation | Best next action |
|---|---|
| You already own a cartridge | Search the exact title, insert the cartridge only after reading the result, and install any required update. |
| You own the digital version | Use the purchasing Nintendo Account on the linked Switch 2, make the virtual game card available, then check the title’s compatibility notes. |
| You are buying a Pokémon game for Switch 2 | Check Nintendo’s live listing first; do not rely solely on a retailer description or another game’s result. |
| You need trading or battling with someone on Switch | Verify local and online rules for that exact game. The documented cross-generation example is the two Let’s Go games. |
| You want improved graphics or performance | Look for a listed free update or paid Switch 2 upgrade and compare its stated changes with your needs. |
Buying Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! as a known cross-system example
Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! for Nintendo Switch is a reasonable physical-software reference point because Nintendo explicitly documents cross-system battles and trades, local communication between nearby Switch 2 and Switch consoles, online communication with Nintendo Switch Online, and Pokémon HOME transfers on both systems. Marketplace stock and pricing vary, so confirm the seller’s edition and condition and still check Nintendo’s current compatibility entry before ordering.
That documented example should not be generalized to every Pokémon game. For any other title, run the five-step check above and preserve the exact result for the edition you plan to use.
Bottom line for Switch owners
Switch 2 is backward-compatible with compatible physical cartridges and digital Nintendo Switch software, and Nintendo’s account, eShop, virtual game-card and Nintendo Switch Online systems carry across linked consoles. Pokémon support is not universal by default: verify each title, edition, feature and upgrade in Nintendo’s live compatibility checker. The Let’s Go games have explicit Nintendo documentation for cross-generation local play, online communication requirements and Pokémon HOME transfers; the status of other Pokémon releases should be treated as unconfirmed here until their current checker entries are consulted.
