Yes. Game Boy Advance games in Nintendo Switch Online’s Nintendo Classics collection can run without Wi‑Fi after you download them and complete an online membership check. The important limit is that your Switch must reconnect to the internet at least once every seven days, and you must have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Single-player play can continue offline; online multiplayer, voice chat and other network features cannot.
What you need for offline GBA play
Offline access depends on three conditions: the correct subscription tier, an initial online setup, and a recurring membership verification. Meeting only one or two of these conditions is not enough.

1. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics is part of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The standard Nintendo Switch Online tier does not include the GBA library. Your Nintendo Account must be attached to a Switch user profile with an active Expansion Pack membership when you set up and use the service.

Nintendo describes the GBA collection as ongoing access for Expansion Pack members. That access is a membership benefit rather than a permanent purchase of each classic game. If the membership expires, the games become unavailable until the subscription is renewed.

2. The Nintendo Classics application and game downloads
You need the Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics application installed on the Switch. The application and its game content must be downloaded while the console is connected to the internet. A game that has never been downloaded or launched through the service should not be expected to work during a flight or in another place with no connection.
3. A membership check within the last seven days
Nintendo allows offline play after a successful online check, but the authorization is time-limited. The Switch must connect online to verify the active membership at least once every seven days. This is a weekly requirement, not a daily check, provided the last verification succeeded and the membership remains active.

How to prepare GBA games before going offline
Complete these steps before leaving home, boarding a plane or entering an area with unreliable service.
- Connect the Switch to the internet. Use a working Wi‑Fi connection and allow the console to complete any pending system or application updates.
- Confirm the account and subscription. Open the Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online settings on the Switch, and make sure the user profile you will use has an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. A different profile on the same console may not have the same entitlement.
- Install Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics. Download the application from the Nintendo eShop while online. Wait for the installation to finish rather than assuming that an icon appearing on the HOME Menu means all content is ready.
- Download the games you intend to play. Open the Nintendo Classics application and let its available GBA content finish downloading. If the application offers an update, install it before disconnecting.
- Launch the service while connected. Start the application and open at least one intended game. This gives the console an opportunity to confirm your membership and complete any pending service check.
- Test offline access. Temporarily disable Wi‑Fi or use Airplane Mode, then launch the application and a downloaded game. Testing at home is safer than discovering an authorization problem after takeoff.
- Record your reconnection deadline. Plan to connect the Switch to the internet again within seven days of the successful verification. The practical deadline is a rolling seven-day window, so reconnecting shortly before a trip gives you the most usable offline time.
The download step and the verification step solve different problems. Downloading places the application and content on the console; verification confirms that the account is currently entitled to use the service. Both should be completed before you lose internet access.

How the seven-day offline window works
The seven-day rule is a recurring entitlement check. After the Switch verifies your active membership online, downloaded GBA games can be opened without a live connection until that verification window expires. Nintendo does not describe this as unlimited offline ownership.
A short trip
For a journey lasting a few hours or several days, perform the check shortly before departure and keep the console offline during the trip. Single-player games can continue to run during the flight, on a train or in another location without Wi‑Fi, as long as the seven-day window has not elapsed.
A trip longer than seven days
For a long vacation, expedition or work assignment, arrange an internet connection before the seven-day window ends. A hotel network, home connection at the destination or another permitted Wi‑Fi service can be used for the required check. If you cannot reconnect within the window, the service may stop allowing the classic games to launch until the Switch verifies the membership again.
Why a daily check is not required
Nintendo’s stated interval is seven days. You do not need to connect every day merely to keep playing offline, although connecting before travel and again before the window expires reduces the chance of an unexpected interruption.
What works offline and what still needs internet
| Activity | Works without an internet connection? | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Launching a downloaded GBA Nintendo Classic | Yes | The account has an active Expansion Pack membership and passed verification within the last seven days. |
| Single-player gameplay | Yes | The game and Nintendo Classics application were downloaded before going offline. |
| Saving progress on the Switch | Yes | Progress is stored on the console while you play. |
| Online multiplayer | No | An internet connection is required for network play. |
| Voice chat and other online functions | No | These features require internet access even when the game itself can run offline. |
| Local wireless multiplayer, where a particular game supports it | Potentially | Local play is different from online play; compatibility and instructions are specific to the game. |
The key distinction is between the game engine running from data on the Switch and features that communicate with Nintendo’s servers or another player over the internet. Offline authorization permits local play; it does not turn an online feature into an offline one.

Can you play on a plane?
Usually, yes. Before boarding, connect the Switch to the internet, open the Nintendo Classics application, verify the Expansion Pack membership and confirm that the GBA games you want are downloaded. Once those steps are complete, enable Airplane Mode or otherwise disconnect from Wi‑Fi and launch a downloaded game.

A plane trip is a good example of the short-trip case: the console can remain offline throughout the flight if the seven-day verification window is still valid. You will not be able to use online multiplayer, voice chat or other network-dependent functions in the air. If the trip continues beyond seven days, you need a way to reconnect and complete another membership check.
What happens when the membership expires?
Nintendo says classic games can be accessed only by an account with an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. For GBA titles, that means the Expansion Pack tier must remain active. When the membership ends, the entitlement ends as well, even if the application and game files are still stored on the console.
Your save data
Save data remains on the Switch. Renewing the membership restores access to the service, allowing you to use the existing local save data again. Ending a subscription therefore blocks access to the classic games; it does not by itself erase the progress saved on the console.
Renewing after a long gap
If you renew after the account has been inactive, connect the Switch to the internet and open Nintendo Classics so it can recognize the renewed entitlement. Do not rely on an old seven-day check from before the membership lapse; the account must be active when access is verified.

Offline-play troubleshooting
The game will not start after disconnecting Wi‑Fi
- Reconnect the Switch to the internet.
- Confirm that the user profile launching the application is linked to the Nintendo Account with the Expansion Pack membership.
- Open the Nintendo Classics application and allow the membership check to complete.
- Verify that the game was fully downloaded rather than merely listed in the library.
- Disconnect again and test the same title.
If the check succeeds online but offline launch still fails, install any pending application or system update while connected and repeat the test before traveling.
The seven-day period has passed
Connect the Switch to the internet and launch Nintendo Classics. The console needs to verify the active membership again. Once the check succeeds, the offline window starts over; there is no need to redownload a game solely because the weekly verification expired.
The wrong subscription tier is active
Base Nintendo Switch Online does not provide the GBA Nintendo Classics collection. Check the membership details for the exact account and confirm that Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack is active. A family membership can cover eligible accounts, but the profile used on the console must be part of that membership arrangement.
The application opens but a game is missing
Reconnect to the internet and open the GBA Nintendo Classics application. Allow the library to refresh and download the title. A game that is visible in an online catalog is not necessarily stored locally for offline use until its download has completed.
You need multiplayer during the trip
Decide whether the planned session is local wireless play or online play. Online multiplayer and voice chat require internet access. Local wireless functions may work without internet when the specific game supports them, but they are not guaranteed for every title and should be tested before departure.

Choosing a setup for different travel plans
| Travel situation | Recommended preparation | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Flight or commute lasting less than seven days | Verify membership and launch the downloaded games shortly before leaving. | Online features are unavailable while disconnected. |
| Trip lasting more than seven days with occasional Wi‑Fi | Schedule a connection before the current seven-day window ends, then open Nintendo Classics to verify again. | Missing the check can interrupt access until you reconnect. |
| Trip with no internet access for the entire duration | Use the service only if the whole trip fits inside the current seven-day verification window. | A longer offline period cannot be covered by downloading alone. |
| Multiplayer-focused travel | Plan for internet access, and separately check whether the title supports local wireless play. | Offline authorization does not enable online multiplayer or voice chat. |
| Account with standard Nintendo Switch Online only | Upgrade or otherwise obtain Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack before setup. | The base tier does not include GBA Nintendo Classics. |
Common misunderstandings
“I downloaded the game, so I own it offline.”
The download is necessary but not sufficient. Access is tied to an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership and a membership verification at least once every seven days.
“The console has no Wi‑Fi, so nothing can be played.”
That is too broad. Downloaded GBA games support offline single-player play during the valid verification window. Only the features that need a network connection stop working immediately when the connection is removed.
“I need to check every day.”
Nintendo’s requirement is once every seven days, not once per day. Connecting more often is optional and can be useful before travel, but it is not the published rule.

The game access ends when the membership ends, but Nintendo says save data remains on the console and can be used again if the membership is renewed.
Pre-travel checklist
- Use the Nintendo Account that has Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
- Install Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics while the Switch is online.
- Download every GBA title you plan to play.
- Open the application online and complete the membership verification.
- Test a downloaded game with Wi‑Fi disabled.
- Note the date by which the Switch must reconnect—within seven days of the successful check.
- Expect online multiplayer, voice chat and other network features to remain unavailable offline.
- If traveling longer than seven days, identify a reliable internet connection for the next verification.
With those conditions met, Nintendo Switch Online GBA games are suitable for offline single-player play. The service is best understood as downloadable gameplay with a weekly online entitlement check, not as a permanently owned cartridge replacement.
