Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical cartridges and digital games released for the original Nintendo Switch. Compatibility is not universal, however. Nintendo maintains a title-by-title list that identifies games that are fully compatible, partly compatible or unsupported. A compatible game can run without an upgrade; optional free updates and paid upgrade packs add Switch 2-specific improvements to selected titles.
What “compatible” means on Switch 2
Nintendo’s official wording is that “Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” The important word is compatible. Switch 2 is not a promise that every game in the original console’s library works exactly as it did before. Individual titles can have limitations, require an update, or be unsupported.

Before buying a console, cartridge or upgrade, check Nintendo’s current compatibility listing for the specific game. Nintendo separates software into compatible, partially compatible and unsupported categories. The list can change as system software and game updates are released, so a general statement about the library should never replace a title-specific check.
Do physical Switch cartridges work on Switch 2?
Compatible physical Nintendo Switch game cards can be inserted into Switch 2 and played. You keep the cartridge as the license for that game, just as you did on the original system. The cartridge does not automatically turn the game into a Switch 2 Edition; it provides access to the original Switch software, with any applicable update or upgrade handled separately.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
What to check before relying on a cartridge
- Look up the exact game in Nintendo’s compatibility list, especially if it uses unusual controllers, instruments, cameras or other accessories.
- Confirm whether the game is listed as fully compatible, partially compatible or unsupported.
- Check whether a free update or paid upgrade pack is available if you want improved graphics, features or modes.
- Keep the card available whenever you play if the physical release is your license; installing data does not generally replace the need for the game card.
A physical copy therefore remains useful after upgrading consoles, but compatibility and enhanced features are separate questions. A game may boot normally while still lacking a particular peripheral function or Switch 2 enhancement.
What happens to digital Switch games?
Compatible digital purchases are supported on Switch 2 as well. Use the Nintendo Account associated with the original purchase when setting up the new console and follow the system’s account and software-transfer instructions. Nintendo’s compatibility statement covers the game license and software; the exact prompts for moving users, save data and redownloading software depend on the setup flow and the title.
Do not assume that a digital purchase includes every Switch 2 improvement. The original game and an optional upgrade pack are treated as separate products unless you buy a Switch 2 Edition bundle. Check the game’s eShop entry and Nintendo’s compatibility information before paying for anything again.

Do you have to rebuy the game?
No, not when you already own a compatible original Switch game. Your existing physical or digital copy provides the base game on Switch 2. You may still choose to pay for an upgrade pack if the publisher offers one and you want its additional content. Buying a Switch 2 Edition is another route, but that edition includes the original game and its upgrade pack rather than requiring two unrelated game purchases.
Compatibility categories and their practical effects
| Nintendo’s status | What it means for you | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible | The original Switch game can be played on Switch 2. | Use your physical card or digital purchase; install any offered update if desired. |
| Partially compatible | The game runs with a documented limitation, such as an accessory or feature that does not work as on the original system. | Read the title-specific note before buying hardware or an upgrade. |
| Unsupported | Nintendo does not support playing that title on Switch 2. | Keep an original Switch available if you need to play it. |
Because the status is title-specific, avoid relying on a friend’s experience with a different game. Two games from the same series can have different compatibility notes.
Free updates, paid upgrade packs and Switch 2 Editions
A compatible original game is the starting point. Some publishers provide a free update that improves the Switch 2 experience. Other selected games offer a paid upgrade pack. Nintendo says an upgrade pack can add visual improvements, new features or additional game modes, and those additions can only be played on Switch 2.
How the three purchase paths differ
| Option | What you receive | Extra payment | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Switch game | The base Switch software you already own on cartridge or digitally. | None if you already own it. | Runs on Switch 2 only when Nintendo lists it as compatible. |
| Free update | Publisher-provided improvements to the base game. | No charge for an eligible title. | Enhances the game on Switch 2; availability varies by title. |
| Paid upgrade pack | Additional graphics, features or modes for a selected game. | Yes, unless included through an eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack benefit. | Upgrade-pack content can only be played on Switch 2. |
| Switch 2 Edition | A bundle containing the original Switch game and its upgrade pack. | Edition price or upgrade price, depending on what you already own. | Includes the base game plus the title’s defined Switch 2 enhancements. |
Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle that “includes the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack.” If you already own the physical or digital original, Nintendo says you can purchase the upgrade pack through Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store or participating retailers. Selected upgrade packs can also be included at no additional charge with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. Eligibility is title-specific, so verify the individual game’s listing.

What an upgrade pack does not mean
- It is not required simply to start every compatible game.
- It does not guarantee the same additions in every title; content varies by game.
- It does not make an unsupported title compatible.
- It does not make upgrade-pack features playable on the original Switch; Nintendo says those additions require Switch 2.
Which games are not compatible?
Nintendo’s public compatibility page is the authority for unsupported and partially compatible titles. A universal list in an article would become incomplete as Nintendo adds notes or publishers patch games. Search by the exact game name, edition and region where applicable, then read every warning rather than stopping at a simple “works” label.
Common reasons to read the notes carefully
- A game may depend on original Joy-Con hardware, a special controller or another accessory.
- A feature may work only with a particular setup even though the main game launches.
- An upgrade pack may require a separate purchase and may not be part of the original digital license.
- A system or game update may be needed before the title behaves as documented.
If Nintendo marks a game as partially compatible, decide whether the missing function matters to how you play. “Starts successfully” and “has every feature” are not equivalent outcomes.
Can you use original Switch accessories?
Accessory compatibility is selective. Nintendo says some original Switch accessories continue to work with Switch 2, but it does not promise that every controller or peripheral will. This matters most for games whose controls depend on a specific accessory.
| Accessory question | Confirmed position | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Original Switch accessories | Select accessories work with Switch 2. | Check the individual accessory and game before assuming support. |
| Joy-Con 2 with original Switch | Joy-Con 2 cannot be used with the original Switch. | They are not a universal replacement for first-generation Joy-Con. |
| Switch 2 Pro Controller with original Switch | The Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Switch. | Keep an original-compatible controller for games played on the older console. |
The direction of compatibility matters: an accessory that works with Switch 2 is not necessarily usable on the original Switch. Read Nintendo’s accessory specifications and the game’s compatibility note together.

GameChat requirements and limits
GameChat is a Switch 2 feature for voice chat, video chat, screen sharing and playing together. It requires a Switch 2 system, a persistent internet connection and a Nintendo Switch Online membership after Nintendo’s open-access period ended on March 31, 2026. The open-access period ran from June 5, 2025, the console’s launch date, through March 31, 2026.
Nintendo documents GameChat groups of up to 12 friends. With a compatible USB camera, up to four participants can appear on video at the same time. Those limits describe the GameChat service, not a promise that every compatible Switch game supports twelve-player sessions or video features.
GameChat checklist
- Switch 2 console.
- Persistent internet connection.
- Current Nintendo Switch Online membership after March 31, 2026.
- Compatible USB camera if you want video; voice and other functions do not automatically imply camera support.
- A game that supports the multiplayer or sharing activity you intend to use.
Storage: why microSD Express matters
Nintendo announced Switch 2 for June 5, 2025. An Associated Press launch report stated that expandable storage requires a microSD Express memory card and that ordinary microSD cards are not compatible. Do not assume an existing card from the original Switch will work merely because its capacity is large enough.

Card capacity, regional availability and current system-software requirements should be checked when you buy. Treat the card standard as a compatibility requirement, not a performance suggestion: an ordinary microSD card is not the supported expansion format identified for Switch 2.

- Confirm that the packaging identifies the card as microSD Express.
- Check the current Switch 2 system requirements and the card’s availability in your region.
- Decide whether you need expansion for digital games, updates and upgrade-pack data.
- Keep original game cards available if you rely on physical software; storage expansion does not change cartridge ownership.
Should you buy a Switch 2 Edition?
Use the following decision path instead of assuming every game needs a new purchase.
- Identify your base copy. Record whether you own the original game physically or digitally. If you do not own it, compare the standard Switch release with the Switch 2 Edition price.
- Check Nintendo’s compatibility status. Stop if the game is unsupported. If it is partially compatible, read the limitation and decide whether it affects your play style.
- Look for a free update. Install it first when available; a free update may provide the improvement you want without a paid pack.
- Compare the upgrade contents. Verify whether the paid pack adds graphics, features, modes or another specific benefit you value.
- Check subscription eligibility. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack can include selected upgrade packs at no additional charge, but not every title qualifies.
- Confirm hardware needs. Account for compatible controllers, a USB camera for GameChat video and microSD Express storage if you plan a large digital library.
When paying for the upgrade is sensible
- You already own the base game and the pack adds a feature you will use regularly.
- You want the Switch 2 Edition bundle and do not own the original game.
- The upgrade is included through your eligible Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
When you can skip it
- You only need to play the original compatible game and are satisfied with its existing presentation.
- The listed enhancement does not affect your preferred mode or controls.
- The game is partially compatible in a way that blocks the feature you actually wanted.
Troubleshooting compatibility problems
The cartridge or digital game does not start
- Check Nintendo’s live compatibility entry for the exact title.
- Install the latest available system and game updates.
- If it is a cartridge, remove and reinsert the card and confirm you are using the intended game release.
- If it is digital, verify that Switch 2 is using the Nintendo Account that owns the purchase and follow Nintendo’s redownload or transfer prompts.
- Read the title’s notes for accessory, region or feature restrictions before concluding that the console is defective.
The game runs, but a feature is missing
Recheck whether Nintendo lists the title as partially compatible and whether the missing feature belongs to a paid upgrade pack. An original game can be playable while its Switch 2-specific additions remain unavailable until the pack is installed.
An old memory card is rejected
Switch 2 expansion uses microSD Express; ordinary microSD cards are not compatible according to the Associated Press launch report. Replace the card with a supported microSD Express model and verify current regional requirements before formatting or moving data.
An accessory will not pair
Confirm which console the accessory was designed for. Nintendo specifically states that Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller cannot be used with the original Switch, while only select original Switch accessories work with Switch 2. Then check the game’s own controller requirements.
The practical answer for existing Switch owners
Switch 2 is an upgrade path rather than a clean break from the original library. Compatible physical cartridges and digital purchases remain useful, and you do not automatically have to rebuy a game. The decisions that can add cost are title-specific: a paid upgrade pack, a Switch 2 Edition purchase when you lack the base game, a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership where relevant, compatible accessories and microSD Express storage.
Check the game first, then the upgrade contents, then the hardware requirements. That order prevents the most common mistake—paying for a Switch 2 Edition or accessory before confirming that the exact game and feature you want are supported.
