There is no official confirmation that Modern Warfare 4’s Campaign can run completely offline. Activision explicitly requires a continuous internet connection for Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ, but its current Editions FAQ does not make the same direct statement about Campaign. Plan to be online for installation, updates, account authentication and dependable access, and do not buy the game on the assumption that a disc or a completed download guarantees offline story play.
What Activision has actually confirmed
The key distinction is between an explicit online-mode requirement and an unanswered Campaign question. Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 Editions FAQ says: “This means you’ll need a continuous internet connection to play Multiplayer (including in Private Matches) and DMZ.” That sentence clearly covers those modes. It does not say that Campaign definitely works without an internet connection, nor does it say that Campaign definitely requires a permanent connection.

That leaves the offline-Campaign question unresolved in the current official documentation. A careful answer is therefore neither an unconditional yes nor an unconditional no. The safest assumption is that you will need an internet connection during setup and should expect online checks or other requirements that could affect access later.

Players often use “offline campaign” to describe several different situations. They do not have the same answer:

- Installing the game with no connection: A digital purchase cannot be downloaded without internet. A disc can provide local installation data, but it does not prove that the launch build is complete or that authentication is unnecessary.
- Launching the Campaign for the first time: The game may require an account sign-in, a license check, an update or a connection before it creates the local files needed for play. The current Activision FAQ does not specify whether that first Campaign launch can happen offline.
- Playing after installation and updates: This is the question most buyers mean, but no current official page gives a platform-specific guarantee that Campaign remains playable after the console or PC is disconnected.
- Playing online modes: This is the part Activision does address directly. Multiplayer, including Private Matches, and DMZ require a continuous connection.
Because these stages can have different checks, a successful installation is not evidence that every later launch will work without a connection.
Platform-by-platform requirements

Do you need PlayStation Plus or Game Pass for the story?
The platform subscription statements concern online multiplayer, not a separately priced Campaign subscription. The Xbox product page says Online Multiplayer requires Game Pass Essential. The PlayStation product page says Online Multiplayer requires PlayStation Plus. Those requirements matter when you enter multiplayer features; they do not establish that either subscription is required to play the story.
Activision also notes that console players may need PlayStation Plus, Game Pass Essential or Nintendo Switch Online for social features and online modes, and that a mobile phone number linked to an Activision account may be required. Those account and service rules should not be read as an offline-Campaign guarantee. The exact requirement can depend on the platform and the feature you are opening.

What a physical disc does—and does not—solve
Activision documents physical editions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. A disc can reduce the amount you must download compared with a digital purchase, but it cannot answer the authentication question. Modern games can ship with a launch build that is supplemented by patches, and a platform can still require an account sign-in or license validation.
If you need to play in a location with unreliable internet, treat the disc as an installation format rather than an offline pass. Install it while connected, download every available update, sign in to the required platform and Activision accounts, and then test the Campaign with the console disconnected. If the test fails, reconnecting is the only dependable recovery until Activision publishes a specific offline procedure.
PC requirements that affect an offline plan
The official Call of Duty PC requirements list broadband internet in all three configuration groups: minimum, recommended and ray-tracing. They also call for a 115 GB SSD and require TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot. Broadband is a published system requirement, not merely a suggestion for multiplayer.

The 115 GB figure describes required SSD capacity in the listed requirements. It does not promise that the installed folder will remain exactly that size after updates. Leave additional free space for patches, shader data and temporary installation files. If the drive is nearly full, an update can fail even when the original installation fit.

For a PC buyer, the realistic offline question is therefore two separate checks: whether the store and game launcher permit a disconnected launch after authentication, and whether the Campaign itself has all required local files. The published requirements do not answer either check directly.
Recommended setup before you lose internet access
These steps maximize your chance of being ready, but they are preparation rather than an Activision guarantee that Campaign will run offline.

- Install while connected. On a console, insert the disc or start the digital download. On PC, install through the store and launcher associated with your purchase.
- Apply the latest game and platform updates. Do not stop at the data on the disc or the first downloaded build. A required patch may contain files needed to start a mode.
- Complete account sign-in. Log in to the console or PC account and the Activision account requested by the game. Resolve password, two-factor or mobile-number prompts before disconnecting.
- Start the game once online. Reach the main menu and open Campaign far enough to confirm that the mode has finished installing any separate content.
- Close the game normally. This gives the platform a chance to save licenses, configuration and Campaign progress locally.
- Test the exact offline condition. Disable Wi-Fi or unplug Ethernet, then launch the game again. Test the Campaign rather than only checking whether the title screen appears.
- Record the failure message if it does not work. Note whether the error mentions an account, license, update, server or missing content. Reconnect before attempting repairs that could require another download.
What will still require a connection
Even if a future update allows a disconnected Campaign launch, online features remain online features. Multiplayer—including Private Matches—requires continuous internet according to Activision. DMZ also requires a continuous connection. Social functions and other online modes can additionally involve the platform subscription and account requirements described by Activision, Xbox and PlayStation.
Connection is also the normal requirement for downloading updates, reinstalling the game, synchronizing cloud saves and recovering an account. An offline test cannot substitute for those services. If you move the installation to another console or PC, expect to sign in and validate the purchase again.

“Can I play Campaign without Wi-Fi after installing it?”
Possibly, but it is not confirmed by the current official pages. Wi-Fi itself is not the deciding factor; a wired connection or any working internet path serves the same setup and authentication purpose. After completing setup, test with all network access disabled.

“Does single-player require PS Plus or Game Pass Essential?”
The published subscription statements are for Online Multiplayer. They do not describe Campaign as requiring PlayStation Plus or Game Pass Essential. You should still expect the platform and Activision account requirements to apply.
“Will the PS5 or Xbox disc work during an outage?”
The disc may contain enough data to install, but no official statement says it bypasses launch authentication, updates or other checks. An outage is exactly when an offline test performed before the outage becomes useful.
“Can I play on PS4?”
No PS4 version is listed on the official PlayStation page; Modern Warfare 4 is listed for PS5. Buying a PS4 system or disc will not provide a supported Campaign installation based on that page.
“When can I start the Campaign?”
Activision lists worldwide launch for October 23, 2026. Digital preorders or prepurchases receive full Campaign Early Access beginning Friday, October 16, 2026, in Pacific Time. Early Access changes when the Campaign becomes available; it does not change the unresolved offline requirement.
How to verify the policy after launch
Because the current documentation does not settle Campaign behavior, check the game’s installation and support pages after launch for a direct platform-specific statement. Look for wording that separately names Campaign, first launch, required sign-in and disconnected play. A page that only says Multiplayer or DMZ require internet still does not prove that Campaign works offline.
For a purchase decision today, use this rule: buy only if you can provide internet for installation, updates and authentication, and regard offline Campaign play as an unconfirmed possibility rather than a promised feature. That approach avoids relying on a disc, a completed download or a multiplayer subscription description to answer a question the publisher has not yet answered directly.
