This table is a starting point, not a guarantee that releases are interchangeable. A Forge or NeoForge project cannot simply be dropped into a Fabric server, and a mod made for one Minecraft release should not be presumed to load on another.
Compatibility requirements every player must satisfy
Before anyone joins, make a simple inventory of the host’s environment and send it to every player. The following items must match unless the project documentation explicitly says otherwise:

- Minecraft release: for example, Fabric 1.20.1 is a different target from a 1.21.x release.
- Loader family and loader version: Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are separate environments. Use the loader named by the mod’s release page.
- Mod file version: install the same release on all required clients and on the server. A newer file may change network packets, configuration keys or dependencies.
- Dependencies: install every library listed for that release, including Fabric API where a Fabric project requires it.
- Configuration: copy or reproduce server-side settings. TurnBasedMC specifically requires the multiplayer-relevant configuration to be changed on the server.
- Java and launcher setup: use the Java and launcher combination supported by the selected Minecraft release and loader, rather than mixing profiles from different installations.
Keep a copy of the working mod list and configuration. If someone updates one component later, record the change and have everyone update together.
How to set up a turn-based co-op session
- Choose the project by multiplayer goal. Pick Soulbound: Turnbattle when co-op battles are the priority. Choose TurnBasedMC when you are comfortable editing a server configuration. Consider DungeonRPG when shared dungeons and companions are more important than a pure turn-order system.
- Select one exact Minecraft release. Open the project’s current release listing and note the Minecraft version, loader and dependency versions. For Soulbound, do not build a new world around the older 1.20.1 listing if the project now directs users to 1.21.1 or newer Modrinth releases.
- Create a clean profile. Make a launcher instance containing only the selected loader, the chosen mod and its stated dependencies. This isolates compatibility problems from unrelated mods.
- Install matching files for every participant. Give each player the same mod file and dependency list. If the server requires the gameplay mod, install that identical file in the server’s mods directory as well.
- Apply server configuration. For TurnBasedMC, edit the server-side configuration described in its documentation. A client-only change will not make the multiplayer rules take effect. Restart the server after saving the setting.
- Start with a short test. Have two players join, enter one encounter or small dungeon and confirm that both can see the expected turn-based or shared-RPG behavior. Do this before importing a large world or adding dozens of extra mods.
- Expand gradually. Add other content mods one at a time, restarting and testing after each addition. Keep the known-good profile so you can roll back if a new mod breaks joining or combat.
Soulbound: Turnbattle — the most direct co-op option
Soulbound’s project description explicitly calls it a turn-based RPG overhaul and states: “Multiplayer support featuring co-op battles which support an unlimited amount of players.” That is stronger evidence for cooperative turn-based play than a generic “server compatible” label.

“Unlimited” is the project’s stated capability, not a promise that every computer, server host or modpack will perform well with any number of people. Your practical limit can still be affected by server hardware, connection quality, the Minecraft release and conflicts with other mods. Start with a small group and verify the encounter flow before inviting a large party.
Pay close attention to release status. The CurseForge listing says the Soulbound 1.20.1 version is no longer being updated and points users toward the 1.21.1 version and current Modrinth releases. Do not combine a 1.20.1 client with a 1.21.1 server, even if both entries use the same project name.

TurnBasedMC documents an important distinction between local and networked play: “server config must be changed on the server side for it to take effect.” In local singleplayer, the game uses the local configuration; in multiplayer, the server configuration controls the relevant behavior.
This means a player can install the mod correctly and still see unexpected real-time behavior if the host never changed the server file. The host should stop the server, edit the documented setting, save it, start the server again and then have clients reconnect. If the project provides a generated configuration file, distribute the intended values to administrators rather than asking each player to guess.

TurnBasedMC is listed for Forge and NeoForge. Select one of those loader families for the server and every client. A Fabric profile is a separate environment and is not a substitute for Forge or NeoForge.
Fabric alternatives: Turn Based Combat and DungeonRPG
Turn Based Combat
Turn Based Combat is described as supporting solo and multiplayer adventures, with a listed Fabric 1.20.1 release. Use it when your group already operates a Fabric 1.20.1 instance or when you specifically want to test that environment. Confirm the project’s dependency list and exact file before installation; a similarly named release for another loader or Minecraft version is not equivalent.
DungeonRPG
DungeonRPG demonstrates why “RPG multiplayer” is broader than “turn-based multiplayer.” Its project information includes multiplayer dungeons and companions and lists Fabric Loader and Fabric API requirements. It can therefore suit a party that wants shared dungeon content and companion-based adventures, even if its combat does not follow the same turn system as Soulbound or TurnBasedMC.
Dedicated server, LAN world or hosted instance?
Dedicated server
A dedicated server is the clearest choice for a persistent group world. The administrator controls the loader, mod files and server configuration, and can keep a backup of the working setup. This is particularly important for TurnBasedMC because the multiplayer setting must be changed on the server side.

LAN world
A LAN session still uses the host’s local Minecraft instance and configuration. Every joining player must use a compatible loader, Minecraft release, mod version and dependencies. If a mod’s multiplayer behavior is controlled by server settings, the host’s configuration is the one that matters; changing only a guest’s file will not override it.
Hosted or rented server
Check that the host allows the required loader and gives you access to the server’s mods and configuration directories. If you cannot edit the relevant server configuration, TurnBasedMC may not be practical even though the mod itself supports multiplayer.
