Can You Play Minecraft Preview With Friends on Different Platforms?

Yes—Minecraft Preview and Android Beta can support multiplayer across different platforms, but only when every player is on the same Bedrock testing build and the same edition. Xbox, PlayStation, Windows and mobile players can meet in a Preview/Beta world when their devices support that test program, their Microsoft accounts and console permissions are configured, and the host is online. Java Edition snapshots cannot join a Bedrock Preview game, and a normal Realms world cannot be used as a Preview server.

The rule that determines whether cross-platform Preview multiplayer works

Minecraft Preview and Android Beta are testing tracks for Bedrock Edition. Bedrock has cross-platform multiplayer, so players on different supported devices can play together. The decisive condition is not the brand of console or phone; it is whether all players are running the same Bedrock Preview or Beta version.

Minecraft Help states: “All players must be using the same version of Beta or Preview to join a multiplayer game.” A player whose test client updated earlier can be unable to join a friend whose client is still on the previous build. The practical solution is to update, or wait until the same build is available to everyone.

Edition is a separate check. Bedrock Preview/Beta players can play with other Bedrock players. Java Edition snapshots are a different edition and cannot connect to Bedrock Preview multiplayer, even if the game version numbers look similar.

Which combinations work?

Players’ editions and builds Can they play together? Why
Bedrock Preview/Beta on the same version Yes, when account, platform and permission requirements are met They are using the same Bedrock testing build.
Bedrock Preview/Beta on different versions No Minecraft requires every player to use the same Beta or Preview version.
Bedrock Preview/Beta and regular Bedrock No for the Preview multiplayer session The clients are on different release tracks.
Bedrock Preview/Beta and Java snapshot No Java and Bedrock are separate editions with separate multiplayer services.
Preview/Beta players on different device brands Yes, if both devices support the relevant Bedrock test program Cross-platform play operates within Bedrock.

The device list for Preview changes by platform and rollout. The available material does not establish a permanent, complete availability matrix for every phone, console and computer. Check Minecraft’s current platform-specific Preview or Beta installation instructions for each player’s device before planning a session.

Xbox and PlayStation: what must be set up?

Microsoft account and PlayStation Network linking

On PlayStation, a Microsoft account must be linked to the PlayStation Network account to play with people on other platforms or to join Realms. Without that link, a player may be able to launch the game but not appear in cross-platform friends lists or connect to a cross-platform session.

Each participant should sign in to Minecraft with the Microsoft account they intend to use for multiplayer. Add one another as Minecraft friends rather than relying only on the console’s local friend list; the Minecraft friend relationship is what the Bedrock game uses to display joinable worlds.

Console online subscriptions and permissions

Console multiplayer can require the platform’s online subscription. The exact requirement depends on the console and account type, and family or child-account privacy settings can block multiplayer even when the subscription is active. Check that online multiplayer is enabled for every account and that communication or cross-network play has not been restricted.

Preview ownership and installation

Minecraft’s console instructions cover PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S and specify digital ownership of the game on the platform, with the stated Xbox Game Pass Ultimate exception. Ownership and Preview access are separate from the ability to join a game: a player still needs the Preview build installed and must launch that test client, not the standard release.

How to join a friend’s Preview world

A friend-hosted world is the simplest option and does not require a Realm subscription. The trade-off is persistence: the world is available to others only while the host is playing and connected.

  1. Install the correct test client. Every player installs Minecraft Preview or Android Beta according to the official instructions for their device. Do not assume that having the regular Minecraft app means the Preview client is installed.
  2. Launch the test client. Look at the title or menu information and confirm that the word Preview or Beta appears. If one player opened the standard Bedrock release, quit and start the testing client instead.
  3. Compare build numbers. Have every player open the in-game menu where the version is shown and compare the complete version string. A major version match is not enough if the build or revision differs.
  4. Resolve a mismatch. Update the older installation when an update is offered. If one platform has received a newer build and another has not, wait until the versions converge; switching platforms does not bypass the same-version requirement.
  5. Confirm Bedrock. All participants must be in Bedrock Preview/Beta. A Java snapshot player needs to use a Bedrock installation to join this session.
  6. Sign in and add friends. Sign in to Microsoft accounts, complete PlayStation Network linking where applicable, and add the other players as Minecraft friends.
  7. Have the host open the world. The host starts the Preview/Beta world, leaves multiplayer enabled in the world settings and remains online. Friends can then select the host’s world from the Friends tab and choose Join.
  8. Check console permissions. If the world does not appear or joining fails, verify the required online subscription and each account’s multiplayer and cross-network permissions.

Can a Preview game use Realms?

A regular Bedrock Realm is not playable from Minecraft Preview or Android Beta. Opening a normal Realm in the release client does not turn it into a Preview server, and a Preview client cannot use that Realm as a bridge to players on the regular release.

An eligible active Bedrock Realms subscriber can create a separate Preview/Beta Realm. Every invited member must also be enrolled in Preview or Beta and must use the same compatible test version. This arrangement is useful when the group needs a persistent world that is not dependent on one friend keeping a console or computer online.

A Preview Realm remains tied to the testing track. If a member leaves Preview, launches the regular Bedrock release or falls behind on updates, that member may be unable to join until the client and account again meet the Realm’s requirements. Keep a copy of important worlds before experimenting with preview software; test builds can change behavior between updates.

Preview Realm plan figures

The official Realms page listed the following United States prices and capacities when accessed on October 11, 2026. Prices and plan terms are commercial details that can change, so verify the current listing before subscribing.

Plan Price shown Players listed Role in Preview play
Bedrock Realms $3.99 USD per month Host plus two other players An eligible subscriber can create a Preview/Beta Realm; all members still need Preview/Beta.
Realms Plus $7.99 USD per month Host plus ten other players Provides the larger listed player capacity for a Preview/Beta Realm when the subscription and test access are eligible.

These subscriptions are optional. You do not need Realms to join a friend’s live Preview world. Choose a Preview Realm only when persistent hosting and its recurring cost justify the additional setup.

Why a player cannot join, and the fix for each symptom

The world does not appear in the Friends list

  • Confirm that both players launched Preview/Beta, not regular Bedrock.
  • Ask the host to open the world with multiplayer enabled and stay in the world while the other player refreshes the Friends tab.
  • Check Microsoft account sign-in, friend status and, on PlayStation, Microsoft account–PSN linking.
  • Verify that the console account permits multiplayer and cross-network play.

“Outdated client” or a version mismatch message

  • Compare the full build number on every device.
  • Install the pending Preview/Beta update on the older client.
  • If the update has not reached one platform, wait for that platform’s rollout rather than trying to join with mixed builds.
  • After updating, fully close and relaunch the game so the new build is actually loaded.

A Java player cannot connect

Java snapshots cannot join Bedrock Preview. The Java player must switch to a supported Bedrock installation and then install or launch the matching Preview/Beta build. There is no account setting that merges the two editions for this session.

A Realm is visible but will not open

Determine whether it is a regular Realm or a Preview/Beta Realm. Regular Realms do not work in Preview. For a Preview Realm, the owner and every invited member must be enrolled in the relevant Preview/Beta program and on compatible versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Joining works on one console but not another

Preview access is not identical across platforms or rollout periods. Recheck the official installation instructions for each device, confirm digital game ownership where the console instructions require it, and verify any platform online subscription. The Xbox Game Pass Ultimate exception described in the console guidance applies only where that stated eligibility condition is met.

Choosing the right way to play

Use a friend-hosted world when

  • The group plays at the same time and does not need the world available when the host is away.
  • You want to avoid a recurring Realms charge.
  • Everyone can coordinate updates so the same Preview/Beta build is installed.

Use a Preview/Beta Realm when

  • The world must remain available independently of one player’s console or computer.
  • The owner already has an eligible active Bedrock Realms subscription.
  • Every participant accepts the Preview/Beta requirement and its update-related interruptions.

Use regular Bedrock instead when

The group values stability over testing new features, or one player cannot access Preview on their device. Regular Bedrock multiplayer follows the release version rather than the Preview/Beta track, but it still cannot include Java players in the same world.

A reliable pre-session checklist

  • Every player has confirmed the same edition: Bedrock.
  • Every player has launched Preview or Android Beta, not the standard release.
  • The complete version/build string matches on every device.
  • Microsoft accounts are signed in and Minecraft friends are added.
  • PlayStation users have linked Microsoft accounts to PSN.
  • Required console online subscriptions and multiplayer permissions are active.
  • The host has enabled multiplayer and will remain online, unless the group is using a Preview/Beta Realm.
  • A Realm is explicitly a Preview/Beta Realm, not a regular Bedrock Realm.

What “cross-platform” does—and does not—mean here

Cross-platform means Bedrock players can connect while using different supported hardware. It does not mean that every edition, release track or device can join every other one. Minecraft Preview is a test environment layered on Bedrock; it does not make Java Edition compatible, and it does not remove the requirement for synchronized builds.

Because Preview rollouts and platform policies can change, check the current Minecraft Help installation guidance for each device immediately before organizing a session. The permanent compatibility principles are straightforward: same Bedrock edition, same Preview/Beta version, correct accounts and permissions, and a session type that matches the client.
