PlayStation’s official FAQ says prior story or character knowledge is not required, although it recommends the earlier titles for the fullest experience of the continuing narrative.
There is also an important qualification to the “Venom game” premise: official listings identify Venom as a villain in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, but the official sources reviewed do not announce a separate Venom game. If you want the complete established Spider-Man story, play Marvel’s Spider-Man, then Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, then Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Do you need to play the earlier Spider-Man games first?
No. You can play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 as your first game in the series. PlayStation answers the question directly in its product FAQ: “You can enjoy Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 without prior story or character knowledge, but we recommend you explore previous titles to fully experience the emerging narrative.” That makes earlier play recommended, not mandatory.

Starting with the sequel remains a supported way to play, but it changes how much background you bring to the story.
#1 Best Overall

Swing, jump, and utilize the new Web Wings to travel across Marvel’s New York, quickly switching between Peter Parker and Miles Morales to experience different stories and epic new powers, as the iconic villain Venom threatens to destroy their lives, their city, and the ones they love.
- An evolution of the Spider-Man story: The incredible power of the symbiote forces Peter and Miles to face the ultimate test of strength, both inside and outside the mask, as they balance their lives, friendships, and their duty to protect those in need.
- Experience two playable Spider-Men: Quickly swap between both Spider-Men as you explore an expanded Marvel’s New York. Experience Peter’s new symbiote abilities and Miles’ explosive bio-electric venom powers, and discover upgradeable, high-tech equipment that enhances the combat experience for extensive gameplay depth and variety.
- Battle iconic Marvel Super Villains: Fight against a variety of new and iconic villains, including an original take on the monstrous Venom, the ruthless Kraven the Hunter, the volatile Lizard, and many more!
If you begin with the sequel, you are not locked out of content or required to own an earlier save file. The trade-off is narrative familiarity: references and returning relationships may carry less meaning on a first playthrough. That is a reason to choose the earlier games, not evidence that they are access requirements.
PlayStation describes the plot as spanning three games. Its recommended sequence is:
- Marvel’s Spider-Man
- Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
That is the chronological story order, not simply the order in which you might find a particular edition on a store shelf.

1. Marvel’s Spider-Man
The first game establishes the version of New York, the central characters and the relationships that the later stories continue. PlayStation lists a PS4 Game of the Year Edition and a PS5 Remastered version; both include The City That Never Sleeps expansion according to PlayStation’s series guide. If you choose one of those editions, the expansion is part of the first game’s available story content rather than a separate prerequisite.
You do not have to purchase a collector’s edition or a themed accessory to obtain the opening chapter. The useful question is which platform edition you can play and whether the included content matches what you want, not whether the package has special Spider-Man branding.
2. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Miles Morales is the middle story chapter, not an unrelated side game. PlayStation places it approximately one year after the first Marvel’s Spider-Man. It follows the series’ developing narrative before the events of Spider-Man 2, which PlayStation places roughly nine months later.
PlayStation identifies Miles Morales for PS4 and PS5. Insomniac’s support information also identifies a PS5 Ultimate Edition and notes that physical preorder editions were offered in the United States and Canada. Edition names, physical stock and regional availability can change, so check the listing for your platform and country before buying.
Rank #2
- Miles morales discovers explosive powers that set him apart from his mentor, peter parker. Master his unique, bio-electric venom Blast attacks and covert camouflage power alongside spectacular web-slinging acrobatics, gadgets and skills.
- A war for control of Marvel's new York has broken out between a devious Energy Corporation and a high-tech criminal army. With his new home at the heart of the battle, miles must learn the cost of becoming a hero.
- Traverse the snowy streets of his new, vibrant and bustling Neighborhood as miles searches for a sense of belonging. When the lines blur between his personal and crime-fighting lives, he discovers who he can trust, and what it feels like to truly be home.
Skipping this chapter is possible, but it removes the middle step in PlayStation’s stated progression. Players with limited time can move directly to Spider-Man 2; players seeking the most complete continuity should treat Miles Morales as the second chapter rather than filler.
3. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is the Venom-relevant entry in this sequence. Sony Interactive Entertainment announced its worldwide PS5 launch for October 20, 2023, and Marvel’s official game listing gives the same release date while listing PS5 and PC availability. The exact edition and platform you can buy depends on the market and current store listings.
How the in-story timeline fits together
The dates below describe approximate intervals inside the fiction, not the games’ publication dates.
| Story chapter | Position in the narrative | Approximate interval identified by PlayStation |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel’s Spider-Man | Beginning of the three-game arc | Starting point |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales | Second chapter | About one year after the first game |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | Third chapter and the game featuring Venom | About nine months after Miles Morales |
Because those intervals are approximate, they should not be read as exact calendar dates. Their practical value is that they explain why beginning with Miles Morales after the first game and moving directly to Spider-Man 2 produces the intended narrative progression.
The timeline also answers a common ordering mistake: the middle game belongs between the two larger entries even though its title emphasizes Miles Morales. Follow the story sequence rather than treating release packaging or character name as a separate continuity.
What does “before a Venom game” mean here?
Venom appears as a villain in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Insomniac’s official game page identifies him as part of that title’s conflict, and PlayStation’s Spider-Man 2 page discusses the same game and its characters.
The official announcements and listings cited here do not announce a separate Venom game. PlayStation’s reveal post announced Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine, while Insomniac’s page describes Spider-Man 2; neither is an announcement of a standalone Venom title. That is the limit of what those official pages establish. It should not be turned into a claim that a future project is impossible, confirmed, or ruled out.
Rank #3
- Miles Morales discovers explosive powers that set him apart from his mentor, Peter Parker. Master his unique, bio-electric venom blast attacks and covert camouflage power alongside spectacular web-slinging acrobatics, gadgets and skills.
- A war for control of Marvel’s New York has broken out between a devious energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army. With his new home at the heart of the battle, Miles must learn the cost of becoming a hero and decide what he must sacrifice for the greater good.
- Traverse the snowy streets of his new, vibrant and bustling neighborhood as Miles searches for a sense of belonging. When the lines blur between his personal and crime-fighting lives, he discovers who he can trust, and what it feels like to truly be home.
Therefore, if you are asking whether you need to finish older Spider-Man games before a currently announced Venom game, there is no such officially announced title in the sources above. If you are asking whether earlier games help before playing the game in which Venom appears, the answer is yes for context, but no for access: Spider-Man 2 remains playable on its own.
Choose the right way to catch up
| Your priority | Best approach | What you gain or give up |
|---|---|---|
| Complete story context | Play all three in order: Marvel’s Spider-Man → Miles Morales → Spider-Man 2 | Maximum continuity and character background; requires playing three campaigns. |
| Reach Venom’s appearance quickly | Start Spider-Man 2 | Fastest route and officially supported, but earlier relationships and events will have less context. |
| You have limited time but want some setup | Play the first game, then decide whether to continue with Miles Morales before Spider-Man 2 | You get the original foundation; skipping the middle chapter removes part of the intended progression. |
| You already finished the first game | Play Miles Morales next, then Spider-Man 2 | Follows PlayStation’s chronology and preserves the approximate one-year and nine-month sequence. |
There is no separate “Venom-only” prerequisite path in the official guidance. The choice is about how much of the established Spider-Man narrative you want before entering the sequel.
Platform and edition considerations
Platform compatibility is a practical reason to check the individual listing rather than assume that every edition works on every console.
| Game | Platform information in the official material | Edition or content note |
|---|---|---|
| Marvel’s Spider-Man | PlayStation identifies a PS4 Game of the Year Edition and a PS5 Remastered version. | Those editions include The City That Never Sleeps expansion. |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales | PlayStation lists PS4 and PS5 versions. | Insomniac identifies a PS5 Ultimate Edition; physical preorder availability was described for the US and Canada. |
| Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 | Sony announced the October 20, 2023 launch on PS5; Marvel’s listing identifies PS5 and PC. | Confirm the current regional edition and platform listing before purchase. |
These are availability descriptions from the cited publishers, not a guarantee that every edition is still in stock. Digital storefronts, physical retailers and regional catalogs may show different options.
Do not compare editions only by the word “Ultimate,” “Remastered” or “Collector’s.” Verify the actual game included, the supported hardware and any expansion or voucher described on the product page. A physical preorder offer in one country does not establish that the same package is sold everywhere.

A practical step-by-step play plan
- Decide whether continuity or speed matters more. If you want every major setup point, commit to all three games. If you mainly want the game featuring Venom, begin with Spider-Man 2 without treating the earlier titles as homework.
- Match each game to your hardware. Check whether you need the PS4, PS5, Remastered or PC listing. Do not assume that a PS4 disc, a PS5 remaster and a PC release are interchangeable products.
- Use the chronological order, not release-date guesswork. Start with Marvel’s Spider-Man, continue to Miles Morales, and finish with Spider-Man 2.
- Check included content on the edition page. If you want the first game’s additional story, verify that the selected PS4 Game of the Year Edition or PS5 Remastered version includes The City That Never Sleeps.
- Keep expectations realistic about availability. Edition names and physical stock vary by country and date. The story order does not depend on owning a collector’s item or a special accessory.
Optional merchandise is not part of the prerequisite
PlayStation has described Spider-Man 2-themed accessories and editions, including a themed DualSense wireless controller, console covers and a Collector’s Edition containing a game voucher, SteelBook case and 19-inch statue. PlayStation also notes limited regional availability and supply for these products.
None of those items is needed to follow the story or unlock Venom-related content. Treat them as optional physical merchandise, and do not infer current stock from the original announcement.
Rank #4
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling Miles Morales optional filler. You can skip it mechanically, but PlayStation places it between the first game and Spider-Man 2 as the second story entry.
- Assuming prior games are mandatory. The official FAQ explicitly says Spider-Man 2 can be enjoyed without prior story or character knowledge.
- Confusing an in-game villain with a separate announced title. Venom’s appearance in Spider-Man 2 does not establish that a standalone Venom game has been announced.
- Mixing publication dates with story chronology. The one-year and nine-month intervals are approximate in-universe gaps supplied by PlayStation.
- Buying by edition name alone. Confirm platform, included expansion content and regional availability on the current product page.
- Treating merchandise as a story requirement. A themed controller, console cover or Collector’s Edition is optional and does not alter the recommended order.

The bottom line
You can play Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 first, and PlayStation officially supports that choice. For the richest understanding of the continuing story, follow Marvel’s Spider-Man, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, then Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Venom is part of Spider-Man 2; the official material cited here does not announce a separate Venom game, so there is no confirmed standalone title that requires an additional play order.
