Can You Play Japanese Nintendo Switch Games in English?

Sometimes. A Japanese Nintendo Switch game plays in English only if that specific game edition includes English. Changing the console language can select English when the game supports it; it cannot translate software that does not.

What determines whether a Japanese Switch game is in English?

The game’s supported languages—not simply the country where it was sold—determine whether it can display English. Nintendo says a game uses the language selected on the console only when that language is supported by the software. Its Japanese support guidance likewise notes that language availability varies by title. Nintendo Support: Can I Play My Game in Another Language?

That means there is no reliable all-games answer. Check the language information for the exact Japanese edition you plan to buy. If English is not listed, changing the Switch setting will not add it.

How to set a supported game to English

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Scroll down and select System, then Language.
  3. Choose English from the list.
  4. Restart the console when prompted. Changing the language closes suspended software.

Nintendo lists English among the Switch system-language options, alongside French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese and Korean. This list describes the console interface choices; it does not mean every game supports each language. Nintendo Support: How to Change the System Language

Will a Japanese game card work on a US or European Switch?

Card compatibility and game language are separate questions. Nintendo says Switch game cards are generally not region-locked, with an exception for consoles and cards distributed in the Chinese region. This does not establish that a game contains English, and Nintendo cautions that overseas software has not been tested across every console region and that full service and support are not guaranteed.

Nintendo recommends buying software intended for the console’s region. For region details, check the game packaging or open Software Information > Support Information for the title. Nintendo Account country settings determine which country’s eShop you access. Nintendo Support: Nintendo Switch Regional Compatibility FAQ

Check DLC separately before importing

DLC has its own region requirement. Nintendo states: “DLC will only work with games that are released for the same region as the DLC.” So a Japanese game card may run on your console while DLC bought from another region’s eShop does not match that game edition. Nintendo Japan also warns that overseas software may not work with additional content sold through the Japanese eShop. Check the region of the base game and the DLC before buying either.

What to verify before buying a Japanese edition

  • English support: Confirm that English is listed for the exact Japanese edition, using official language details for that release. Console compatibility pages do not provide language lists for individual games.
  • Card and console region: Check the package or the game’s Support Information, and account for Nintendo’s Chinese-region exception.
  • DLC compatibility: Match the DLC region to the region of the game edition.
  • Support expectations: Be aware that Nintendo has not tested every overseas title across every console region and does not promise full service and support for all such software.
