Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world, single-player action RPG. Its official FAQ says the game has no online or co-op gameplay, so you cannot invite another person into your campaign on PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo Switch.
There is one practical exception for Windows players: an unofficial project called Hogwarts MP can place several people in a shared, server-based sandbox. It is separate from the official game, requires a legitimate PC copy and compatible software, and does not promise that the original story can be completed cooperatively.

What the official game actually supports
The publisher describes Hogwarts Legacy as an “immersive, open-world, action role-playing-game” set in the 1800s Wizarding World. The official FAQ also identifies it as a single-player experience and states that it does not have online or co-op gameplay.

A friend cannot join your character, enter your save file or control a second student through a supported game mode. The same limitation applies whether you own the digital or physical edition.

Platforms do not change the answer
The game is available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. None of those official versions adds human multiplayer. The platform list describes where the solo game can be played, not a cross-platform network feature.
If you own a physical copy, an internet connection may be required to install the Day 1 patch. That installation requirement should not be confused with online play: the patched game remains a single-player title.
Friends in the story are non-player characters
Your character can build relationships with fellow students, and some of them can accompany you as companions. They can fight alongside you, participate in quests and react to your choices, but they are controlled by the game. They are not additional human players and cannot be replaced by someone joining remotely.

The unofficial Windows-PC multiplayer option
Hogwarts MP is a community project that provides a server-based multiplayer framework derived from Hogwarts Legacy. Its documentation describes a multiplayer sandbox rather than an official expansion. The project is not a feature supported by the game’s publisher, and its behavior can differ from the normal single-player release.
Requirements before you attempt it
- Windows PC: The documented project route is for the Windows version. A PlayStation, Xbox or Switch copy cannot use this installation.
- A legitimate base-game copy: The project documentation requires an authentic PC copy purchased through Steam or the Epic Games Store.
- Compatible launcher and build: Your game and the multiplayer project must use versions that work together. An update on one side can prevent a connection until the project catches up.
- Server access: Multiplayer sessions run through servers. You may need to host one yourself or obtain access to a server operated by someone else.
- Agreement on rules: Server owners can define rules and activities, so one server may offer a very different experience from another.
Check the project’s current documentation before installing anything. It describes the software as pre-release, which means instructions, supported builds and available features can change. Do not assume that a guide written for an earlier game update will still apply.
What playing together looks like
Once everyone has the required PC setup and a matching build, players may be able to enter the same server and share a Hogwarts-themed environment. The framework can support multiplayer activities chosen by the server owner, but it is not a second, publisher-maintained campaign.
Rank #2
- A NEW TAKE ON 3rd PERSON COMBAT: The martial arts style combat system allows you maximum freedom of movement and agility while mixing shooting, melee and powers from your mutations.
- EVOLVE YOUR GAME-PLAY: You’ll be able to recode your genetic structure to change the way you look and play.
- NEXT LEVEL OF CRAFTING: Mix and match parts to create your own unique single- or double-handed slash, crush and pierce melee weapons.
- GEAR UP FOR ADVENTURE: You have full freedom when equipping your character. Not only when it comes to choosing weapons you created, but also what type of gear you wear.
- SURVIVE IN A VIBRANT OPEN WORLD: You’ll create your own adventure as you journey explore the open world and what lies beneath its surface, by foot, mech, jet-ski, air-balloon and more.
The project’s own play documentation makes an important distinction: it is “a multiplayer sandbox, not a promise that Hogwarts Legacy’s story can be completed cooperatively.” In practical terms, you might explore, meet other characters or participate in server-defined activities without receiving reliable two-player versions of every quest, cutscene, boss encounter or progression flag from the official story.
Save data and progress should also be treated cautiously. A community server can have its own persistence rules, resets or technical problems. Keep backups of your normal single-player saves and avoid assuming that activity on an unofficial server will transfer cleanly into the official campaign.
Official game versus Hogwarts MP
| Comparison point | Official Hogwarts Legacy | Hogwarts MP |
|---|---|---|
| Supported platforms | PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch | Windows PC only, according to the project documentation |
| Ownership | A purchased copy of the game for your chosen platform | A legitimate Steam or Epic Games Store PC copy is required |
| Human players | Not supported | Players can share a compatible server when the project and server allow it |
| Story progression | Designed for one player’s campaign | No guarantee of cooperative completion of the original story |
| Setup | Install the game and its required updates | Install the project, match the launcher/build and connect to a suitable server |
| Support and stability | Publisher-supported release | Community project described as pre-release; behavior depends on its current build and server |
| Rules and activities | Defined by the game’s developers | Can vary according to the server owner’s configuration |
How to try the unofficial route safely
If your goal is specifically to share a virtual Hogwarts with friends, use a cautious checklist rather than treating the project like a normal game mode.
- Confirm the platform. Every participant needs a Windows PC installation. Console and Switch editions cannot be converted into the documented PC setup.
- Verify ownership. Each participant should own a legitimate copy through Steam or the Epic Games Store. Do not use cracked files or copies obtained from unknown download sites.
- Read the current project instructions. Confirm the supported Hogwarts Legacy version, required launcher, installation location and any additional dependencies. Pre-release projects can change their procedure after a game update.
- Match builds before connecting. Everyone should be on the project version and game build required by the server. A mismatch is one of the most common reasons a client fails to join.
- Choose or host a server. Ask who controls the server, what activities it supports, whether access is private and how progress is saved. Server rules determine what “multiplayer” means in that session.
- Back up your saves. Copy your ordinary single-player save files before experimenting. Keep unofficial testing separate from the files you rely on for the main campaign.
- Set expectations. Treat the session as a sandbox visit or social experiment, not as a guaranteed two-player replacement for the official narrative.
Common connection problems
- The game launches but will not connect: Recheck the required project build, launcher version and server address. Updating the base game without updating the project can break compatibility.
- Friends see different content: Confirm that everyone joined the same server and that the host has enabled the same activities. Server configurations are not necessarily identical.
- A quest does not progress for everyone: This is consistent with the project’s sandbox limitation. The framework does not guarantee cooperative support for the official campaign’s quest flags or cutscenes.
- The server is unavailable: A community server may be offline, full or discontinued. Contact the operator or choose another documented server rather than downloading an unverified replacement.
- A patch breaks the setup: Wait for compatible project documentation or follow its rollback guidance. Avoid mixing files from unrelated releases.
What you can do with friends without a multiplayer mod
Play the campaign separately
The simplest option is for each person to play their own single-player character while comparing house choices, talent builds, gear and quest decisions. This preserves the intended experience and works on every supported platform.
Watch or stream a session
One player can share a screen through a streaming or voice-chat service while friends advise on dialogue choices, exploration routes or combat tactics. The viewers remain spectators; they do not control characters in the game.

Coordinate a themed playthrough
Friends can agree on a shared challenge, such as choosing different Hogwarts houses, limiting certain spells or completing the same side-quest chain. Compare results afterward without claiming that the game has synchronous co-op.

Should you buy the game for multiplayer?
Do not purchase a console or standard PC edition expecting an official co-op mode. The base game is suitable if you want a solo open-world RPG with NPC companions and a Wizarding World setting.
Choose the unofficial PC route only if you already accept its extra conditions: Windows ownership, a legitimate Steam or Epic copy, build matching, server administration and pre-release behavior. The attraction is shared-space experimentation, not a dependable cooperative story campaign.
Before spending money, verify the exact PC edition, current project compatibility and server availability. Listings, prices and regional stock for physical and digital editions change, and the project’s requirements can change after updates.
A useful companion for solo play
For readers who decide to play alone, Scholastic’s trade catalog lists Hogwarts Legacy: The Official Game Guide as a physical companion publication. A guide can help with exploration, puzzles and reference information while you follow the intended solo campaign. It does not add multiplayer functionality, and availability depends on the edition and region.
The bottom line
You cannot play the official Hogwarts Legacy story with a friend through an online, local or split-screen mode. Student companions are NPCs. Windows players can investigate Hogwarts MP, but it is an unofficial, pre-release multiplayer sandbox that requires legitimate PC copies, compatible builds and server access; it does not guarantee cooperative completion of the game’s original story.
