Yes—but the answer depends on which Hearthstone story format you mean. Book of Heroes and Book of Mercenaries are explicitly solo experiences. The newer Journey system also puts a story campaign, quests, rewards and seasonal activities in the Hearthstone Journal, but Blizzard has not said that every Journey quest or event is solo. For the first Journey chapter, The Road to Ny’alotha, you can catch up on unlocked story parts until Patch 38.0; Blizzard has not promised access after that patch.
What “solo and at your own pace” means in Hearthstone
Hearthstone has several kinds of story content rather than one permanent story mode. Some are self-contained, single-player adventures. Others are expansion-linked campaigns that open on a schedule. The practical answer is therefore two-part:

- Solo play: Blizzard explicitly labels Book of Heroes and Book of Mercenaries as solo content.
- Flexible timing: the current Journey chapter lets you wait and catch up after parts unlock, but only within the announced availability window.
“At your own pace” does not mean that every chapter is available forever or that every activity in the Journal can be completed alone. It means you are not required to finish a newly released Journey story part on its first day.

How the current Journey campaign works
The campaign lives in the Hearthstone Journal
Blizzard’s 37.0 patch notes describe Journey as a system in the in-game Journal. It combines an expansion’s story with Journey Quests, rewards, events and seasonal experiences. Narrative scenes can be presented as voiced vignettes or text-driven moments, rather than only as a sequence of card battles.

This structure is different from a traditional Solo Adventure menu. The Journal is the place to check for the active campaign, newly unlocked parts and associated objectives.
The Road to Ny’alotha schedule
Blizzard announced the first chapter, The Road to Ny’alotha, on October 5, 2026, with the chapter beginning October 13. It contains seven parts released over seven weeks. One new part unlocks each week.
The important catch-up rule is Blizzard’s own wording: “Previously unlocked parts remain available until Patch 38.0, so you can complete them at your own pace.” That gives you a window to fall behind and then play several released parts together. It does not establish that the chapter remains playable after Patch 38.0, nor does it state what happens to unfinished parts once that patch arrives.
Rewards for finishing the chapter
Each completed part awards one Reign of the Black Empire pack. Completing all seven parts therefore awards seven packs. Those numbers describe the announced first chapter; they should not be assumed to apply to later Journey chapters.

Playing the current Journey solo: a practical procedure
- Open the Journal. From Hearthstone’s current interface, select the Journal and look for the Journey section associated with the active expansion.
- Check the chapter status. Identify which part of The Road to Ny’alotha is unlocked. A locked future part cannot be started early simply because you want to play ahead.
- Read the activity description. The Journey groups story, quests, rewards and events together. Blizzard has not declared every activity in that group solo, so do not assume an event or quest has the same requirements as the story vignette.
- Play the unlocked story part when convenient. You can wait for a later week and then complete earlier unlocked parts during the catch-up period.
- Collect the part reward. Each completed part grants one Reign of the Black Empire pack, for a possible seven packs after all seven parts.
- Finish before the stated cutoff. Previously unlocked parts are promised to remain available until Patch 38.0. Treat that patch as the deadline unless Blizzard publishes a later extension or a new access rule.
This procedure supports flexible scheduling, not unlimited access. The weekly release gate and the Patch 38.0 cutoff are separate: you can wait after a part unlocks, but you cannot use the catch-up rule to open unreleased parts or to guarantee access after the cutoff.
Book of Heroes: a separate, clearly solo format
Book of Heroes predates Journey. In the September 2020 patch notes, Blizzard called it “an all-new solo experience!” The launch-era description presented a free, single-player, linear adventure with eight bosses and a class-pack reward.
Its design is closer to a conventional Solo Adventure: you progress through a defined sequence of encounters rather than following a weekly chapter calendar. That makes the format naturally suited to playing in short sessions or completing several encounters in one sitting.

The eight-boss figure and class-pack reward belong to Blizzard’s 2020 launch description. They are not evidence that every Book of Heroes chapter has the same length or reward, and the announcement does not verify whether all chapters remain accessible in the October 2026 client. If the Book does not appear in your current menus, do not infer that the old announcement guarantees permanent availability.

Book of Mercenaries versus the Mercenaries game mode
Book of Mercenaries is another story series that Blizzard explicitly identifies as solo content played within traditional Hearthstone gameplay. It should not be confused with Mercenaries, the separate mode that combines role-playing and roguelike elements.
Blizzard states that the two are independent: playing Book of Mercenaries is not a prerequisite for entering the Mercenaries mode, and playing the mode is not required to follow the Book stories. This distinction matters when you are looking for a story you can play alone; selecting the separate mode does not automatically open the Book campaign.
When Blizzard introduced the format in 2021, it described a serialized story involving ten Mercenary characters and installments released semi-monthly. That cadence was an original plan, not a promise about the current client’s schedule. Use the in-game Journal or collection menus to determine what is presently accessible.

Blizzard’s 2019 Year of the Dragon returning-player guide listed Dungeon Run, Monster Hunt, Puzzle Lab and Rumble Run as free Solo Adventures available in-game at that time. These names are useful for identifying Hearthstone’s historical single-player formats, but the guide is not a 2026 availability statement.

Client navigation, rotation and archival decisions can change. Before planning a long-term playthrough around one of these adventures, search the current Solo Adventure or Journal menus. If a mode is absent, the older guide alone cannot establish that it was removed, moved or temporarily unavailable.

You can wait between weekly unlocks
The seven-week release cadence does not require a weekly appointment. If Part 3 unlocks while you are busy, you can return later and play Part 3 after Part 4 or Part 5 has released, provided the earlier part is still within the announced window.
You cannot play future parts early
The announcement says one new part becomes available each week. It does not describe an option to unlock all seven parts immediately, purchase early access or skip the release cadence.

There is no published completion-time estimate
Blizzard’s cited announcements provide boss, part and reward counts, but no measured number of hours for Journey, Book of Heroes or Book of Mercenaries. Your session length will depend on how quickly you read the narrative, build decks and handle encounters; an exact “finish in X hours” claim would not be supported by these sources.

Patch 38.0 is the boundary to plan around
The only explicit deadline is that previously unlocked Journey parts remain available until Patch 38.0. Blizzard does not explain whether unfinished progress is preserved, whether rewards can be claimed later or whether the chapter moves to an archive afterward. If completing the seven-pack track matters to you, finish all unlocked parts before that patch rather than relying on an unannounced extension.
Common points of confusion
“Story in the Journal” does not mean “every Journal activity is solo”
Journey is a container for several activity types. Blizzard confirms the campaign’s story presentation but does not assign solo or multiplayer requirements to every quest and event grouped with it. Check each activity’s instructions instead of treating the entire Journal as a single-player mode.
“Book of Mercenaries” does not mean “Mercenaries mode”
The similar names describe different products inside Hearthstone. The Book is a solo story series in traditional gameplay; Mercenaries is the separate RPG/roguelike mode. Neither is a prerequisite for the other.

Descriptions from 2019, 2020 and 2021 explain how Blizzard launched these formats. They do not certify that every named adventure or chapter is still exposed in the October 2026 interface. Treat the current client as the authority for what you can actually open.
A sensible solo-player plan for 2026
- Open the Journal after each weekly Journey unlock so you know which part is available.
- If you miss a week, set aside one session to clear the backlog rather than assuming it will disappear immediately.
- Track the Patch 38.0 date in Blizzard’s live patch communications; the announcement guarantees availability only until that patch.
- Keep Journey story completion separate from quests or events whose mode requirements are not stated.
- Use Book of Heroes or Book of Mercenaries when you want an explicitly solo, self-contained story format and those entries are present in your client.
- Verify older adventures in-game before promising yourself a particular legacy campaign.
The result is a qualified yes: Hearthstone supports solo storytelling, and the first Journey chapter is designed to let you catch up after weekly releases. The flexibility ends at the announced Patch 38.0 cutoff, and Blizzard has not established that every Journey activity—or every older Book chapter—remains permanently available.
