Yes—an independent project made the original Halo: Combat Evolved playable in a web browser, according to an October 1, 2026 report. That is separate from Halo: Campaign Evolved, the official Halo release that launched July 28, 2026 and supports Xbox Play Anywhere. The browser project is not an official Xbox release.
Can you play Halo in a browser?
PC Gamer reported that developer Mitchell Hynes created a browser-based version of the original Halo: Combat Evolved using a decompilation effort. The report described mouse-and-keyboard play and multiplayer functionality. Hynes told PC Gamer that the project recorded almost 20,000 games across 115 countries in its first five hours; that is an early figure reported by the developer, not independently audited adoption data. PC Gamer’s report does not establish whether the project remains available, how reliably it works now, or whether multiplayer is still functioning.

This independent browser project should not be confused with Halo: Campaign Evolved. The latter is the official game announced by Xbox for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, and PlayStation 5, with a July 28, 2026 launch date. Xbox’s announcement says it supports Xbox Play Anywhere and was available on day one through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Availability and subscription catalogs can change. What Xbox Play Anywhere means for Halo: Campaign Evolved
Xbox describes Play Anywhere as a way to play supported games on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs from one eligible digital purchase. For Halo: Campaign Evolved, players use the same Microsoft account, and the feature applies to digital purchases. Digital purchase versus physical edition
A digital edition is the relevant format if you want the Play Anywhere entitlement for this game. A physical copy, including the Collector’s Edition, is limited to the platform it was purchased for and does not unlock the game on other supported platforms.
Choose the storefront and platform deliberately
Play Anywhere links eligible Xbox digital ownership across Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Do not assume a purchase on Steam or PlayStation also grants an Xbox Store entitlement; the launch announcement lists those platforms separately. Check the edition and storefront terms before buying, especially if you want to use the same digital purchase on both Xbox and Windows PC.

How quickly has the Play Anywhere catalog grown?
Xbox has reported two dated catalog milestones. They indicate expansion between the announcements, but they are not a live catalog count and do not establish why the program grew or a precise growth rate.

The report is not a legal ruling. Treat any current claims about whether the site or its multiplayer works as time-sensitive rather than guaranteed.
