Private play does not remove every player-count restriction. Many Freemode Events require several participants, and Rockstar explicitly says that Time Trials are unavailable in private or solo sessions. Treat each activity as a separate question rather than assuming that everything in GTA Online supports one player.

What “playing GTA Online solo” actually means
Solo play in GTA Online is not a separate offline game mode. You are still using GTA Online, but you choose a session in which a public crowd is not sharing the lobby. That distinction matters because session privacy and activity rules are different systems.
Invite Only and other private sessions
An Invite Only session is a private lobby. You can enter it alone and keep the session limited to players you invite. A Solo session likewise keeps you away from a public lobby. These options are useful when you want to work without strangers interfering, but they do not automatically make every activity available to one player.

Private does not mean every activity is solo-capable
Some missions check how many players are present before they begin. Rockstar’s Freemode Events guidance says events can appear in private sessions, while also noting that many require a minimum number of participants. A private lobby therefore controls who is present; it does not bypass an activity’s built-in player requirement.
How to start an Invite Only session
Rockstar Games Support’s instructions, last updated May 26, 2026, begin from Story Mode. Use this route:
- Enter Story Mode.
- Open the Pause Menu.
- Select Online.
- Choose Find New Session.
- Select Invite Only Session.
The game leaves your current session and loads a new private one. Starting from Story Mode is important because it is the starting point specified in Rockstar’s support procedure; if you are already in an online lobby, return to Story Mode before following the menu path.

You can remain in the Invite Only lobby by yourself or invite other players later when an activity supports cooperation. The lobby’s privacy setting does not change the underlying rules of the mission or event you select. If an activity asks for more participants, you must meet that requirement even though the session itself is private.
Content Rockstar confirms you can do alone
Business activity, including Sell missions
Rockstar’s July 26, 2022 update notes state that business content, including Sell missions, can be accessed in private sessions. For a solo player, that means you can carry out this category of business work without first joining a public lobby.

The wording is deliberately narrower than “every business feature works solo.” Rockstar confirms access to business content and Sell missions in private sessions, but the cited notes do not promise that every individual business mission, setup, delivery condition or mechanic can always be completed by one player. Check the player requirement shown for the particular job you are launching.
Operation Paper Trail
Operation Paper Trail is a six-mission storyline in which players work as IAA field operatives. Rockstar describes it as being for one to four players. Because one player is an allowed party size, you can run all six missions alone rather than needing to assemble a crew.

The one-to-four-player description is the meaningful detail here: it establishes solo support for this operation, while still allowing a group of up to four. Other story or contact missions should not be assumed to use the same rule unless their own lobby screen or official description says so.
Other activities in a private lobby
GTA Online contains more activities than the examples above, but the official material cited for this question is not a complete, current activity-by-activity catalog. Some jobs may launch privately yet impose a minimum party size; others may be designed for a single player or allow optional help. Read the activity’s displayed player range before committing to a solo plan.
Content that has important solo restrictions
Freemode Events with minimum participant counts
Rockstar’s Freemode Events information says events are available in private sessions, but many require a minimum number of participants. This produces two different outcomes:

- An event that accepts one participant can be attempted in a private lobby.
- An event with a higher minimum will not start until enough eligible players are present, even in an Invite Only session.
The requirement belongs to the event, not to the privacy setting. Inviting friends may satisfy the minimum, but merely changing from Public to Invite Only cannot lower it.

Time Trials are the clearest exception. Rockstar Games Support states: “Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions.” If a Time Trial is your goal, an Invite Only lobby is the wrong session type; the support guidance does not describe a private-session workaround.
Why an activity can appear but still be unavailable
A marker, menu entry or event notification does not guarantee that a solo launch is permitted. The activity may be visible while its start screen checks the number of participants. When that happens, read the displayed requirement instead of treating the visibility of the activity as proof that it supports one player.
Choosing the right session for your goal

The table separates what is confirmed from what still depends on the individual activity. It is safer to check the launch screen than to infer compatibility from the fact that you are already in a private lobby.
A practical solo-play workflow
1. Decide whether privacy or participation is the priority
If your priority is avoiding unrelated players, start with Invite Only. If your target activity requires several participants, identify those players before launching it. Privacy is useful for coordination, but it is not a substitute for the required party size.

2. Enter the private lobby correctly
Use the Story Mode route: Pause Menu > Online > Find New Session > Invite Only Session. Wait for the new lobby to finish loading before selecting the activity you want to test.
3. Confirm the activity’s player range
Look for the number of players shown on the activity’s launch screen. A range beginning at one indicates that a solo start is supported. A higher minimum means you need additional participants, regardless of whether the lobby is public or private.
4. Treat exceptions literally
Do not use the general rule “private sessions allow events” to plan a Time Trial. The specific Time Trial restriction overrides the broader private-session rule. Likewise, do not expand Rockstar’s business-content statement into a guarantee about every business mechanic.
5. Add players only when the activity needs them
An Invite Only lobby can remain private while you bring in selected players for an activity that requires more than one participant. If you are running Operation Paper Trail or confirmed solo business work, no additional player is required by the cited descriptions.

Common problems and how to diagnose them
The Invite Only option is missing or does not behave as expected
Return to Story Mode and repeat Rockstar’s documented sequence. The official instructions start there, not from an already-running public activity. Select Online, then Find New Session, then Invite Only Session, and allow the game to load the new lobby.

A business job will not start alone
Rockstar confirms private-session access to business content, including Sell missions, but does not state that every business job is one-player compatible. Read the specific job’s player requirement. If it demands more than one participant, the private setting has not removed that requirement.
A Freemode Event is visible but cannot begin
Check the event’s minimum participant count. Rockstar says many Freemode Events require multiple participants. Invite enough eligible players if you want to proceed; otherwise, choose an activity whose displayed range starts at one.
A Time Trial cannot be found in the private lobby
This is expected under Rockstar’s published rule. Time Trials are not available in private or solo sessions, so changing between Invite Only and Solo will not make one appear.

Platform and date qualifications
The cited Freemode Events support page is titled for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Its rules are useful for those versions, but they should not automatically be treated as an exhaustive statement about every current platform edition. Menus, event availability and requirements can change with updates, so check the information displayed in your own game when it conflicts with an older support description.
The dates also matter. Rockstar’s private-session business statement comes from update notes dated July 26, 2022; the Invite Only setup instructions were last updated May 26, 2026; and the quoted Freemode Events guidance was last updated February 25, 2024. Those references establish the rules described here, but they are not a promise that Rockstar will never revise a mission or event requirement.
