Short answer: the original Grand Theft Auto IV is a PlayStation 3 game, not a native PS4 or PS5 release. Can a PS5 play GTA IV?
Not as a standard backward-compatible PS5 game. Sony’s official support guidance describes PS5 backward compatibility as support for “the overwhelming majority of PlayStation®4 games.” That wording defines the ordinary pathway: PS4 software can run on PS5 when the specific title is supported. It does not establish general compatibility with PS3 discs.

Rockstar’s own announcement about backward-compatible Rockstar games on PS5 discusses selected newer releases that already have PS4 versions. It also explains that owners of compatible digital titles can download them through the platform account associated with the purchase. The announcement does not announce a PS4 or PS5 edition of GTA IV.
What happens if you insert the PS3 disc?
A physical GTA IV PS3 disc is not a normal PS5 game disc. The PS5’s backward-compatibility program is not a general PS3-disc emulation service, so inserting the disc does not provide the original game through the console’s standard game interface. Treat claims that a PS3 GTA IV disc will install or play on PS5 as unverified unless they point to an officially identified release.
Does a PS5 Digital Edition change the answer?
No. It removes the disc drive as an option, but even a disc-equipped PS5 does not gain GTA IV compatibility merely by accepting a disc. Sony separately states that PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition. That statement is about supported PS4 discs; it is not a method for using a PS3 GTA IV disc.

There is no cited official PS4 release or PS4 download of GTA IV in the relevant Sony and Rockstar catalog material. The PS4 is therefore not an established way to play the original console version. A product page labelled “PS4/PS5 compatible” should be treated cautiously unless it identifies an official GTA IV release from the platform holder or Rockstar.

Do not confuse backward compatibility with a new port. If a game has a PS4 edition, a PS5 can often run that PS4 edition. GTA IV’s documented PlayStation release is the PS3 version, and the cited announcements do not add a PS4 edition to that chain.
Why the GTA Trilogy listing is not GTA IV
The PlayStation Store lists Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition for PS5 and PS4. That product contains a separate set of earlier Grand Theft Auto games; it is not a PS4 or PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto IV.
Store search results can place similarly named Rockstar products next to one another, especially when a console filter is active. Check the exact title, included games and product description before purchasing. Seeing “Grand Theft Auto” and “PS5” together is not evidence that GTA IV is included.

Option 1: Use a PS3 with a genuine GTA IV disc
This is the clearest route to the original PlayStation experience. Obtain a genuine GTA IV PS3 disc—seller listings may describe the original game or a Complete Edition—and use it with a functioning PS3. The disc and console are the two essential parts; a PS4 or PS5 cannot substitute for the PS3 in this setup.

- Confirm the product: verify that the listing identifies the PlayStation 3 version and the exact edition you intend to buy.
- Check the console: make sure the PS3 reads game discs and connects to a television with the cables or adapter you have available.
- Inspect the disc: look for cracks, deep scratches or a damaged data layer. Cosmetic wear is not the same as a guaranteed working disc.
- Match the region: compare the disc’s region with any downloadable content you plan to use.
- Install and update normally: insert the disc into the PS3 and follow the console’s on-screen prompts. Keep the console software and game data in the state required by the system.
If you already own a PS3, this route avoids buying an unverified “PS4/PS5” listing that may actually be a PS3 product. If you do not own one, budget for both the used console and the game; the game disc alone cannot run on a newer PlayStation.
Option 2: Use an Xbox version where backward compatibility is officially listed
Rockstar’s backward-compatibility announcement establishes Xbox as a platform family for compatible Rockstar titles. That does not mean every Xbox release is available on every Xbox model or in every region. Check the current Xbox catalog for the exact GTA IV edition and console you plan to use before paying.
This is a different purchase path from the PS3 disc. An Xbox copy, Xbox account entitlement and supported Xbox console are not interchangeable with a PlayStation disc or PlayStation Store license.

Option 3: Use the PC version
The PC release is a separate route with its own storefront, launcher, operating-system and hardware requirements. Confirm the current PC storefront listing, supported operating system and account requirements before buying. A PC license does not grant a PlayStation license, and a PS3 disc does not provide the PC files.

Disc, digital and listing checks before you buy
Compatibility errors often begin with an ambiguous product description rather than a console defect. Use this checklist when evaluating a listing:
- Exact platform: the package should say PlayStation 3 for the original PlayStation game. “PlayStation” without a platform number is insufficient.
- Edition: distinguish the base game from a Complete Edition or a bundle, and confirm which discs or downloadable components are included.
- Physical versus digital: a PS3 disc is not a PS4/PS5 digital entitlement. Do not assume that registering a disc adds a newer-console download.
- Console requirement: the listing should make clear that a working PS3 is required for the PS3 product.
- Region: verify that the game and any planned DLC belong to compatible regions.
- Condition and returns: ask whether the seller has tested the disc and whether a return is available if the PS3 cannot read it.
Region locking and downloadable content
Rockstar Support states that “GTAIV is region-locked.” For an imported copy, the game and its downloadable content must match in region. A DLC purchase made through a different PlayStation Network region can therefore be incompatible with the disc, even when the title name appears identical.
How to avoid a region mismatch
- Identify the region represented by the disc and its packaging or product code.
- Use the PlayStation account region that corresponds to the game when looking for DLC.
- Do not assume that changing the console language or selecting a different store region changes the game’s region.
- If a seller cannot establish the disc region, treat future DLC compatibility as uncertain and consider a locally sold copy.
Region checking is especially important for a Complete Edition or an imported bundle: the included content may be tied to the same regional rules as the base game.

Mistake: trusting a marketplace title that says “PS4/PS5”
Symptom: the seller promises compatibility but shows a PS3 disc or does not identify an official edition. Fix: ask for the exact platform and release, then compare it with the platform holder’s catalog. If no official PS4 or PS5 GTA IV release is identified, do not treat the listing as proof.
Mistake: assuming a PS5 can read every older PlayStation disc

For this question, “backward compatible” should identify a specific supported relationship: for example, a PS4 game that Sony lists as playable on PS5, or an Xbox title included in the current Xbox compatibility catalog. It should not be used as a vague promise that a modern console accepts all discs from earlier PlayStation generations.
Ask three questions before checkout: Which platform is the original product for? Is the newer console support documented by Sony, Microsoft or Rockstar? Is the license physical, digital or tied to a particular region? A listing that cannot answer all three leaves you carrying the compatibility risk.
Bottom line for PS5 and PS4 owners
There is no established native PS4 or PS5 version of the original GTA IV in the cited official material.
