Yes. Rockstar lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5. The Rockstar Store currently gives November 19, 2026 as the release date and November 12, 2026 as the pre-load date, although either date can change. Rockstar and PlayStation have not published a confirmed download size, installed size, or minimum free-space requirement for the PS5 version in the listings reviewed on October 13, 2026.
That means you can plan to play on PS5, but you cannot responsibly plan around a particular number of gigabytes yet. Keep enough flexible space on the console, check the final store listing when pre-loading opens, and use an M.2 SSD only if you need more directly playable PS5 storage. A USB extended drive can store the game, but a PS5 game must be moved back to console storage or compatible M.2 storage before it can run.

What Rockstar has confirmed about GTA VI on PS5
Rockstar’s support information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S as the platforms for Grand Theft Auto VI. The Rockstar Store also has a PS5 product listing. This is a current platform listing, not a promise that the game will run on older PlayStation hardware: the reviewed information does not list a PS4 version.
The dates currently shown by the Rockstar Store are:

How much storage will GTA 6 require?
No official number has been published in the Rockstar and PlayStation listings reviewed for this article. There is therefore no confirmed figure for the download, the final installed footprint, or the amount of free space the PS5 installer will demand.
The question “How many GB is GTA 6 on PS5?” is understandable, but its wording should not be treated as evidence that a size has been announced. Numbers circulating in social posts, videos, forums, or rumor articles are estimates unless Rockstar or the PlayStation Store displays them. Do not convert a rumor into a purchase decision by assuming it is the final requirement.

When an official listing eventually shows a size, it may not be the only number you see. A download can be compressed, while the installed game occupies a different amount of space after unpacking. Updates, language packs, and temporary installation files can also affect the free-space check. The store may show a package size at one point and the console may require additional working room during installation.
Until Rockstar or PlayStation states the requirement, the only accurate answer is that the capacity is unannounced. A safe target cannot be calculated from the size of another open-world game, the nominal capacity printed on a PS5 box, or an unverified screenshot.
What Sony’s PS5 storage guidance means for GTA VI
PlayStation’s storage guidance describes three relevant locations. They do not have the same behavior, so choosing a drive depends on whether you want to archive the game or launch it directly.
| Storage location | What the official guidance supports | Can a PS5 version launch directly from it? | Best use for GTA VI |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 console storage | The built-in storage holds PS5 games and saved data. | Yes; this is the normal installation location. | Install and play the game without moving it. |
| USB extended storage | PS5 game data can be stored on the drive. | No. PlayStation says PS5 games must be moved back to console storage or an M.2 SSD to play. | Archive or transfer the game when internal space is needed for another title. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | A commercially available compatible M.2 SSD can expand storage for games and apps. | Yes, when the drive meets PlayStation’s current requirements and is correctly installed. | Keep more PS5 games installed and playable without repeatedly moving them. |
An M.2 SSD is optional. Nothing in the reviewed material says GTA VI requires a separately purchased drive. You may be able to install it on the built-in storage; the unresolved issue is how much free capacity the final installer will check.

Buy one only for a storage-management reason, not because a rumor claims GTA VI will require it. If your internal storage routinely fills up, a compatible M.2 SSD gives you another location from which PS5 games can be launched. If you normally keep only a few games installed, waiting for the official size can avoid buying capacity you do not need.

Check compatibility before purchasing
PlayStation requires an M.2 SSD that meets its current interface, physical-size, heat-management, and performance specifications. Those requirements can change in support documentation, so verify the current Sony guidance immediately before buying. Do not assume that every NVMe drive, every enclosure, or every drive advertised for a computer is suitable for installation inside a PS5.
Understand what an M.2 upgrade does not do
- It does not reveal GTA VI’s final size or guarantee that a particular drive has enough free space.
- It does not turn a USB extended drive into a launch location for PS5 games.
- It does not remove the need for the console to complete system and game updates.
- It is an expansion option, not an announced requirement for GTA VI.
How to prepare your PS5 without knowing the final size
You can make launch day smoother without guessing the capacity. The following process keeps the decision reversible.
- Check the current free space. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings, choose Storage, and review console storage. Note both the total free space and the games you could remove or move if necessary.
- Remove only games you can redownload. Delete an installed game you no longer play, but confirm that its saved data is preserved before doing so. A deleted game can generally be downloaded again from your library; deleting the game application is different from deleting saved progress.
- Use USB storage as an archive. If you have a USB extended drive configured for PS5, move large PS5 game data there when you need room. Remember that the game will have to be moved back before playing.
- Install an M.2 SSD only after checking Sony’s current specification. Follow the console’s installation and formatting instructions. The drive must be recognized and formatted by the PS5 before it can hold games.
- Update the console. A current system software version reduces the chance that a pre-load or storage-management screen differs from the instructions you are following.
- Keep the console online near November 12. A pre-load can begin only when the store listing makes it available for your account and region. Leave additional working room rather than filling every last byte of the selected drive.
What to do when pre-loading opens
On November 12, 2026, open the official GTA VI product page on your PS5 or the PlayStation Store website signed in to the purchasing account. The page should show whether pre-load is available and may provide the first authoritative storage figure.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the GTA VI listing and confirm that the product is the PS5 edition you intend to use.
- Read the displayed download or storage information and compare it with the free space shown under Settings > Storage.
- Start the pre-load and watch the PS5 download screen for the actual package size. Do not interrupt the console if it changes from downloading to installing.
- After installation, return to Settings > Storage to see the space consumed on the selected drive. This post-install figure is more useful for planning than an early compressed-download figure.
- Check for an update before launch. A day-one patch can change the space used and may require temporary free space even if the base installation fit.
If the store page still does not show a number, the absence is itself important: there is still no official capacity to quote. Leave room according to what the console’s own installer requests rather than following a third-party target.

Free space on console storage
Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps. Sort or inspect the largest titles, then delete games you can reinstall later or move PS5 game data to USB extended storage. Do not delete saved data unless you have deliberately backed it up and understand the consequences.
Move, do not launch, from USB
USB extended storage is useful when the immediate problem is an overcrowded internal drive. It is not a permanent playable location for the PS5 version. After moving GTA VI or another PS5 title to USB, select the game and use the move option to return it to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before launching.
Install to an M.2 SSD
If the built-in storage is regularly full, an installed compatible M.2 SSD can provide directly usable space for PS5 games and apps. Confirm that the drive is recognized and formatted, then select it as the installation destination where the console allows. The GTA VI requirement itself remains whatever the official listing and installer specify.
Allow for installation overhead
A console can reject an installation even when the displayed game size appears to fit exactly. Keep a buffer for unpacking, updates, and system operations. Because Rockstar has not stated the required amount, do not publish or rely on a made-up “safe” number; use the space warning shown by your own PS5.

What the PS5 SSD statement does—and does not—tell you
In a June 24, 2026 PlayStation Blog post, Mary Yee, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “Thanks to the close partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment and Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto VI will play best on PS5 by taking advantage of PS5’s immersive features to deliver a deeply engaging single-player experience when it launches on November 19.”
The same post says GTA VI leverages the PS5 ultra-high-speed SSD for near-instant load times. That describes how the game uses the console’s storage technology for performance. It does not disclose how many gigabytes the installation occupies, how much free space the installer will require, or whether an expansion drive is necessary.

Is the November 19 date final?
It is the release date currently shown by the Rockstar Store as of October 13, 2026. Treat it as subject to change and recheck the listing before pre-load.
When can PS5 players pre-load?
The Rockstar Store currently says November 12, 2026. Availability can depend on the listing, account, and region, so confirm the button and timing in the official store page.
Can I play GTA VI from a USB hard drive?
Not while it remains on USB extended storage. PlayStation’s guidance requires PS5 game data to be moved to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before playing.
Do I need to purchase an M.2 SSD?
No requirement has been published. An M.2 SSD is an optional expansion for players who want more directly playable PS5 storage. Wait for the official GTA VI size and compare it with your available capacity.

The unresolved fact is likely to be settled on the official product page around pre-load. On November 12, check the Rockstar Store listing, the PlayStation Store entry for your region, and the size shown by your own PS5. Record whether each figure refers to a download, installed data, or a free-space check; those labels are not interchangeable.
Until one of those official interfaces supplies a number, the accurate storage plan is simple: maintain flexible space on console storage, use USB only for holding and moving PS5 data, and consider a Sony-compatible M.2 SSD only when your broader game library justifies the expansion.
