No. The PS5 version of Grand Theft Auto VI cannot launch directly from a USB external hard drive. You may store its PS5 game data on a compatible USB extended-storage drive, but PlayStation requires you to copy that data back to the PS5 console storage before playing. An installed, compatible internal M.2 SSD is different: PS5 games can launch from that expansion drive.
What the PS5 version of GTA VI supports
PlayStation Store lists Grand Theft Auto VI as a PS5 game published by Rockstar Games, with PS5 Pro Enhanced support and a November 19, 2026 release date. PlayStation’s June 24, 2026 announcement also says the game will play best on PS5 and launches on November 19. Those listings identify the game as a PS5 title; they do not change the console’s storage rule for PS5 software.

That distinction matters because PS5 games use the console’s high-speed storage path when running. A USB drive can hold the installed files, but the PS5 does not treat USB extended storage as a launch location for PS5 games. The restriction applies to the PS5 version of GTA VI, regardless of whether the USB device is a traditional hard-disk drive or an external solid-state drive.

Why an external USB drive cannot run GTA VI directly
PlayStation’s support guidance states: “PlayStation®5 games can’t be played directly from USB extended storage, so make sure to copy PS5® game data back to your console storage when you want to play the game again.” In practical terms, USB extended storage is an archive and transfer location for PS5 games, not a place from which those games can be launched.

You can move an installed copy of GTA VI off the internal console storage to free space, disconnect or retain the USB drive, and later copy the game back. The copy operation restores the files to console storage; it is not the same as starting the game from USB. If the game is listed under the USB drive and you select it there, the PS5 presents a copy option rather than a Play option.
PS4 games are the important exception: compatible PS4 titles can run directly from USB extended storage. That exception does not apply to the PS5 version of GTA VI. A USB drive that works perfectly for PS4 games still cannot launch this PS5 title.
USB extended storage versus an internal M.2 SSD
The two storage choices solve different problems. USB extended storage is useful for keeping PS5 games when internal space is limited, while a compatible M.2 SSD installed in the PS5’s expansion bay can serve as active game storage.

The table’s “yes” for an M.2 SSD means an SSD that is actually installed and recognized as the PS5’s internal expansion storage. Simply connecting an M.2 drive through a USB enclosure puts it in the external-storage category and brings back the same no-direct-launch limitation.

What a compatible external USB drive must meet
- USB standard: PlayStation describes supported devices as SuperSpeed USB storage. Check the drive and cable specifications rather than assuming every older USB disk qualifies.
- Capacity: Sony’s stated range is at least 250 GB and no more than 8 TB for USB extended storage.
- Formatting: The PS5 formats the drive as USB extended storage. That process erases data already on the drive, so copy anything important elsewhere first.
- Connection: Connect the drive directly to the PS5’s USB port using a suitable cable. A hub or an underpowered connection can prevent the console from recognizing it.
These are storage compatibility requirements, not a promise that GTA VI will launch from the drive. Even a fast, large USB SSD follows the same PS5-game transfer rule.
How to move GTA VI from the PS5 to USB storage
Once GTA VI is installed on the console and the USB device has been prepared as extended storage, use the PS5’s built-in move command:
- Open Game Library on the PS5.
- Highlight Grand Theft Auto VI without starting it.
- Press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose the connected USB extended-storage drive as the destination and confirm the move.
The console relocates the installed game data. The game remains associated with your library, but its playable copy is no longer in the console’s active storage. If you later select the game while it is stored on USB, you will need to copy it back before the PS5 can start it.

To restore the game to a playable location, open the storage-management screen with the USB drive connected and select GTA VI under USB extended storage. Choose Copy (or the equivalent copy-to-console command shown by the current PS5 interface), select the PS5 console storage as the destination, and wait for the transfer to finish. Then launch the game from the console’s game library.

Do not unplug the drive while a move or copy is in progress. If the copy is interrupted, reconnect the same drive, allow the PS5 to repair or re-index it if prompted, and check whether GTA VI appears under USB extended storage. Start the copy again only after the console reports that the drive is ready.
Using an internal M.2 SSD instead
A compatible M.2 SSD installed in the PS5 expansion slot avoids the repeated USB-to-console transfer. PlayStation allows PS5 games to be downloaded, copied, and launched from that internal expansion storage, so GTA VI can remain there between sessions.
What installation involves
- Buy an M.2 NVMe SSD that meets Sony’s PS5 compatibility requirements, including the required physical size, interface, and cooling solution listed in the console’s current support documentation.
- Turn off the PS5, disconnect it, remove the console cover as described in the hardware manual, and install the SSD in the expansion bay.
- Replace the cover, reconnect the console, and format the SSD when the PS5 prompts you.
- In storage settings, set the M.2 SSD as the preferred location for PS5 game installations if you want new games to go there automatically.
Installing an M.2 drive requires more effort than plugging in USB storage and carries greater compatibility risk: a drive that lacks the required specifications, cooling, or firmware support may not be accepted by the console. Verify the exact PS5 requirements before buying; Sony’s published PS5 documentation does not establish a particular model, price, or GTA VI performance figure.
Which setup makes sense for your use
Choose USB extended storage when you archive games
USB storage is the simpler choice if you rotate through games, need an inexpensive way to hold titles you are not currently playing, or do not want to open the console. Keep in mind that every GTA VI session after archiving requires a copy back to console storage. The time will depend on the drive, connection, and amount of data; no verified GTA VI transfer-time benchmark or install-size figure has been officially published.

Choose an internal M.2 SSD when you need more active PS5 space
An M.2 SSD is better when you want several PS5 games available without moving them back and forth. It costs more than simply reusing a USB disk and requires installation, but it supports direct launch of PS5 games, including GTA VI once the game is installed there.
Use both for different jobs
Many owners can combine the approaches: keep currently played PS5 games on the console’s internal storage or installed M.2 SSD, and use USB extended storage as an archive. In that arrangement, GTA VI can be moved to USB when you need space, then copied back when you are ready to play.

PlayStation has not provided an official GTA VI install-size figure, so do not reserve space based on online guesses. Check the size shown by the PlayStation Store or the console when the game becomes available. Leave additional free space for updates and system operations rather than filling a drive to its advertised maximum.

The USB limit is a property of PlayStation’s extended-storage support: the drive must be at least 250 GB and no larger than 8 TB. It does not indicate how much space GTA VI will consume. Likewise, an M.2 SSD’s advertised capacity is not identical to the free space shown after formatting and system overhead.

Common problems and fixes
“The game is on USB, but there is no Play button”
That is expected for a PS5 game. Select the title in USB extended storage and use Copy to return it to console storage. Once copying completes, launch it from the game library.
The PS5 does not recognize the drive
- Confirm that the device is SuperSpeed USB-compatible and falls within Sony’s 250 GB to 8 TB range.
- Connect it directly to the console, then check Settings → Storage → USB Extended Storage.
- If the PS5 asks to format the drive, remember that formatting erases its existing contents.
- Try another compatible cable or USB port if the drive repeatedly disconnects.
The copy fails or stops
Make sure the destination console storage has enough free space and that the USB drive remains connected throughout the operation. Restart the PS5 and retry the copy if the drive is still recognized. Do not format the drive as a first response if it contains other games or files you need, because formatting deletes them.
A USB-connected M.2 SSD still cannot launch GTA VI
Only an M.2 SSD installed in the PS5’s internal expansion bay qualifies for direct PS5-game launching. An M.2 drive placed in a USB enclosure is treated exactly like other USB extended storage and requires the copy-back step.

If you shop for an archive drive, the accurate description is PS5-compatible external USB hard drive or external USB SSD that meets Sony’s SuperSpeed USB requirements. Such a product can store PS5 games, including GTA VI, but cannot run them directly. For direct play from added capacity, look for a PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD intended for installation in the console’s expansion slot. Confirm the current Sony compatibility requirements before purchase, because neither storage category is guaranteed solely by its capacity or interface name.
The practical answer
You can install or move GTA VI’s PS5 data to an external USB drive to save internal space, but you cannot play it there. Before each play session, copy the game back to the PS5’s console storage. If you want GTA VI to remain playable without that transfer, install it on the PS5’s internal storage or on a compatible M.2 SSD installed in the expansion bay.
