It is separate from GTA Online, so you do not need multiplayer to play the campaign on platforms where Story Mode is sold independently. There is one important current-generation console qualification: Rockstar currently says GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. On PC, Story Mode generally works offline after installation and activation, although entitlement checks, updates, and cloud synchronization can require an internet connection.
What “playing GTA 5 solo” actually means
GTA V has two distinct products or modes:
- Story Mode: the single-player campaign, played alone through the three-character story.
- GTA Online: the separate online mode, which requires an internet connection and supports multiplayer activities, shared sessions, and online progression.
Completing Story Mode does not require joining an online session, creating an online character, or participating in GTA Online activities. Conversely, owning access to GTA Online does not automatically answer whether a particular platform or edition includes Story Mode. That entitlement is determined by the product you bought and the account using it.

Rockstar’s PlayStation 5 store listing distinguishes an edition that includes both Story Mode and GTA Online from a standalone GTA Online product in which Story Mode is available as an in-game upgrade: Rockstar Games Store: Grand Theft Auto V for PlayStation 5.
Does Story Mode require GTA Online on your platform?

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S condition is platform-specific. Do not apply it automatically to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, or another listing without checking the current product and support information for that platform.

How to play Story Mode offline on PC
Rockstar’s wording is deliberately qualified: “Story Mode generally does not require an internet connection to play.” The qualification matters because the launcher may need to contact Rockstar before it can establish that you own the game, synchronize saves, or install current files. Use this sequence rather than disconnecting during the first launch.
- Install GTAV and the Rockstar Games Launcher while online. Complete the initial installation and allow the launcher to finish downloading updates.
- Sign in to the required Rockstar Games account. Rockstar says a PC account is needed for installation, online play, and certain online features. Account sign-in also lets the launcher verify the purchase.
- Launch GTAV once with an internet connection. Wait for entitlement verification and any pending game or launcher updates to complete before attempting offline play.
- Choose Story Mode from the game’s available modes. Offline launching is intended for the single-player mode; GTA Online still needs an active connection.
- Close the game normally and disconnect only after setup succeeds. The next launch can use the launcher’s supported offline behavior, provided no new verification, update, or synchronization is required.
Rockstar documents the PC process in Launching Grand Theft Auto V on PC in offline mode (last updated February 28, 2025) and gives broader launcher guidance in Playing games offline from the Rockstar Games Launcher (last updated May 1, 2024).
Why a PC that supports offline Story Mode may still ask for the internet
Offline support does not mean the game is permanently independent of Rockstar’s services. A connection can be needed for several different reasons:

- Initial entitlement verification: the launcher must confirm that the signed-in account owns the game or the relevant Story Mode product.
- Periodic verification: Rockstar maintains a separate support article for periodic GTAV entitlement checks on PC. A previously working offline installation can therefore request a connection later.
- Game or launcher updates: an outdated build may need to download files before it will start.
- Cloud synchronization: cloud saves and other synchronized data cannot update while the computer is disconnected.
Rockstar’s entitlement guidance is available at Periodic Entitlement Verification for GTAV on PC. Treat an occasional verification prompt as a licensing or synchronization check, not proof that Story Mode has become an online-only game.

What changes on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S?
For these current-generation consoles, Rockstar’s support article states: “GTA Online is required to play GTAV Story Mode on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.” The article was last updated November 11, 2025, so this is the current rule reflected in Rockstar’s support documentation.
That requirement can affect players who previously reached Story Mode through a temporary route. Rockstar specifically notes that someone who obtained Story Mode while accessing GTA Online through a free trial or a subscription such as GTA+, Game Pass, or PlayStation Plus may need to purchase GTA Online to resume access to Story Mode. Losing the trial or subscription entitlement can therefore look like a Story Mode failure even when the installed files have not changed.
If a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S installation says you cannot access the campaign, first verify the account’s GTA Online entitlement and the edition attached to that account. Reinstalling the game cannot restore an entitlement that has expired or belongs to a different account.

Edition and entitlement: the detail that decides access
“I own GTA V” can describe several different purchases. A complete edition may include both Story Mode and GTA Online, while a standalone GTA Online product may present Story Mode as a separate in-game upgrade. Digital and physical copies can also have different entitlement behavior, especially when a console account, disc, or store region is involved.
Before buying or troubleshooting, record these four details:
- Platform: PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or another supported system.
- Product name: identify whether the listing says it includes Story Mode, GTA Online, or both.
- Account: use the same console or Rockstar account that made the purchase or claimed the entitlement.
- Access source: note whether access came from a purchase, a free trial, or a subscription benefit.
On PS5 in particular, Rockstar’s own listing shows why the distinction matters: the combined GTAV product and standalone GTA Online are presented as different purchase paths. Verify the exact store description before paying for an upgrade or assuming that an installed Online client contains the campaign.

The answer depends on both platform and activity:
- PC: Rockstar says an account is required for installation, online play, and certain online features. In practice, the launcher uses that account to authenticate the PC installation and its entitlements.
- Console Story Mode: Rockstar says a Rockstar Games account is not required to play Story Mode on console.
- Online features: a Rockstar Games account is needed for certain online functions even on console.
This distinction explains two apparently conflicting situations: a console player can enter the campaign without creating a Rockstar account, yet a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S player can still be blocked if the required GTA Online entitlement is missing. Account creation and product entitlement are separate checks.

PC: the launcher says you are offline or cannot verify ownership
- Reconnect the computer to the internet and sign in to the Rockstar Games Launcher account that owns GTAV.
- Allow pending launcher and game updates to finish.
- Start GTAV online once so the launcher can complete entitlement verification.
- Enter Story Mode, exit normally, and then retry the offline launch.
If the prompt returns later, reconnect again. Rockstar documents periodic verification for PC, so an offline session is not a guarantee that verification will never be requested.
PC: the game starts, but saves or cloud data look different
Offline play cannot upload or download cloud data while disconnected. Reconnect before switching between computers or relying on a newer cloud save. If the launcher asks to synchronize, read the conflict choices carefully rather than assuming the local or cloud copy is automatically the newest.
PS5 or Xbox Series X|S: Story Mode appears locked
- Open the store or game-management screen for the account that bought GTAV.
- Check whether the installed product includes Story Mode or is the standalone GTA Online product.
- Check whether access came from a trial or subscription that has ended.
- Confirm that the required GTA Online entitlement is active on that same account.
Only after those checks should you try restoring licenses, reinstalling, or contacting platform support. A download can be complete while the account still lacks the entitlement Rockstar requires on these consoles.

You see an “activation required” message
On PC, an activation message usually points to account, entitlement, or connectivity rather than a requirement to play the campaign with other people. Sign in with the purchasing account, reconnect, and let verification finish. Rockstar has a dedicated article for this condition: Grand Theft Auto Online Activation required error (last updated July 26, 2024). Although the message mentions GTA Online, the useful first step is still to confirm which product and account the launcher is validating.
Buying checklist: avoid paying for the wrong access
Use this checklist before purchasing a digital code, disc, or upgrade:
- Match the listing to your exact platform generation; a PS5 product is not interchangeable with a PS4 entitlement.
- Look for an explicit statement that Story Mode is included.
- On PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, verify that the listing or your account also provides the GTA Online entitlement Rockstar requires for Story Mode.
- Check whether the offer is a one-time purchase, a trial, or a subscription benefit.
- Confirm the store region and account that will redeem the product.
- For a physical copy, check whether the disc is required to launch and whether the package includes the current-generation version you intend to use.
Do not infer inclusion from the words “GTA Online” alone. Rockstar’s PS5 listing demonstrates that GTA Online can be sold separately from the combined GTAV edition.
Bottom line by platform
- PC: Yes, you can play GTA V alone in Story Mode. After installation and activation, it generally works offline, but periodic entitlement checks, updates, and cloud synchronization can require reconnecting.
- PlayStation 5: Story Mode exists, but Rockstar currently requires GTA Online access to play it. Check the exact edition and entitlement on your account.
- Xbox Series X|S: The same current Rockstar requirement applies: GTA Online is required for Story Mode.
- Other platforms: Check the platform-specific store listing and current support article rather than assuming the PS5/Xbox Series X|S rule applies everywhere.
The safest answer is therefore conditional: GTA V is a solo game through Story Mode, but whether you can access that mode without GTA Online depends on your platform, edition, and entitlement. On PC, offline Story Mode is generally supported after setup; on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar currently ties Story Mode access to GTA Online.
