Yes on Xbox Series X|S, but not on PS5. Grand Theft Auto IV is available through Xbox backward compatibility on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Series X can use a compatible Xbox 360 disc or a digital copy; the disc must remain available to verify ownership. Series S has no disc drive, so it requires a digital purchase or digital entitlement. A PlayStation 3 copy cannot be played on PS5: Sony states that PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs, and the cited official catalog information identifies no PS4 or PS5 edition of GTA IV.

At a glance: where GTA IV works

The current-console answer depends on both the console and the format of your copy. Xbox Series X|S carries forward the Xbox version through backward compatibility. PS5 does not carry forward the original PlayStation 3 version.

Console Digital GTA IV Xbox 360/PS3 disc Disc-drive requirement Episodes and expansions
Xbox Series X Yes, through the Xbox backward-compatible listing Compatible Xbox 360 disc works Required for a physical copy Included when you own the relevant edition or add-ons
Xbox Series S Yes, through a digital purchase or entitlement No disc support Series S has no disc drive Available digitally where listed
PS5 No official PS4/PS5 GTA IV edition is identified in the cited catalog material PS3 discs are not supported Not applicable No PS5 compatibility path is identified

Xbox lists the game as published by Rockstar Games, released on April 29, 2008, with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S support. Store prices, bundle contents and regional availability can change, so treat any price shown in the store as current only for your account and region.

Why Xbox Series X|S can run GTA IV

Microsoft’s backward-compatibility program made Grand Theft Auto IV and Episodes from Liberty City playable on Xbox One. In its February 9, 2017 announcement, Xbox Wire stated that “All versions of the game, including Grand Theft Auto IV: The Complete Edition, are compatible on Xbox One.” Xbox Series X|S supports Xbox One backward-compatible titles, and the current Xbox listing names GTA IV as playable on both Series consoles.

#1 Best Overall
Grand Theft Auto IV (Renewed)
  • Disc only. Original case and manual not included. Will come packaged in a generic case.
  • This renewed game has been cleaned, tested, and shows minimal wear.

This is compatibility with the Xbox 360 release carried through Microsoft’s supported system, not a newly built PS5-style remake. The official announcements do not establish a separate current-generation remaster, a new graphics mode or a guaranteed frame-rate upgrade. Expect the game to appear and launch as the supported Xbox edition shown in the store or installed from your disc.

Playing on Xbox Series X

Using an Xbox 360 disc

Series X is the only model in the Series family with a disc drive. A compatible Xbox 360 GTA IV disc can therefore serve as your license, while the console downloads the backward-compatible game data. Xbox Wire describes the process as inserting the Xbox 360 disc into the Xbox One and downloading the game; the same backward-compatibility route applies on Series X.

  1. Sign in to the Xbox account you intend to use for the game and connect the console to the internet so it can obtain the backward-compatible installation.
  2. Insert the GTA IV Xbox 360 disc into the Series X drive.
  3. Accept the installation or download prompt shown by the console.
  4. Leave the disc in the drive whenever you play. The disc is used to verify that you own the game; installing the data does not turn the physical copy into a disc-free license.

The disc must be an Xbox 360 version. A PlayStation 3 disc cannot be converted by inserting it into an Xbox console, and a Series S cannot read any physical disc.

Using a digital copy

If the game is already associated with your Microsoft account, open the console’s library and check Ready to Install. Xbox Wire specifically identifies Ready to Install as the route for digital owners to download the backward-compatible game. If you do not own it, search the current Xbox store listing and check the edition and included add-ons before purchasing.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy- The Definitive Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
  • Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.

Digital ownership is tied to the account that bought or redeemed the game. If the title is missing from Ready to Install, first verify that you are signed in to the purchasing account, then search the store directly. A listing or entitlement can vary by country, and a delisted or temporarily unavailable item cannot be assumed to be downloadable simply because another region shows it.

Playing on Xbox Series S

Series S is digital-only. It has no optical drive, so an Xbox 360 GTA IV disc, including a Complete Edition disc, cannot be used as the license. You need either a digital purchase on the account you are using or an existing digital entitlement that appears in the Xbox library.

  1. Open the Microsoft Store on the Series S and search for Grand Theft Auto IV.
  2. Check whether the listing is available for your region and whether it is the base game, a Complete Edition, or a listing with separate add-ons.
  3. Purchase the available digital edition if you do not already own it, or select the download option from your library if you do.
  4. Install the game and any owned Episodes from Liberty City content shown as separate add-ons.

Buying a used physical copy for a Series S will not solve the problem: the console cannot read the disc or claim its license. If you are choosing between Series models specifically to play a disc collection, Series X is the model that preserves this option.

What happens to Episodes from Liberty City?

The Xbox backward-compatibility announcement covers Episodes from Liberty City as well as GTA IV. The Xbox store identifies The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony as add-ons. Depending on the edition or bundle available in your region, these episodes may be included with a Complete Edition or presented as separate digital content.

Grand Theft Auto IV
  • Carry on the Grand Theft Auto tradition playing through the single player campaign as Niko Bellic
  • Get cars and other modes of transportation anyway you can
  • Interact with various colorful characters who give you various missions to engage in
  • Engage in multiplayer challenges ranging from cover matches to shoot-outs, System Specification: Windows Vista SP 1 / Windows XP SP 3, Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8GHz, AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4GHz, 1.5GB, 256MB Nvidia
  • Game Rated 'M' due to Intense Violence, Blood, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Partial Nudity, Use of Drugs and Alcohol

Before buying, open the store page and read the current contents for the exact listing. Do not assume that a base-game purchase automatically includes both episodes, or that every physical listing contains identical discs. The store’s bundle description is the authoritative record for what your account will receive at the time of purchase.

Why a PS3 copy does not work on PS5

PS5 backward compatibility is not a general PS3-disc feature. Sony’s PS5 support documentation explicitly says: “PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation®3 discs.” Because the original PlayStation console release of GTA IV was on PS3, inserting that disc into a PS5 will not install or launch the game.

The cited official PlayStation catalog material also does not identify a PS4 or PS5 edition of GTA IV. That means a PS5 owner cannot solve the disc problem by buying a different PlayStation download unless Sony or Rockstar publishes an official PS4/PS5 release. The Xbox backward-compatibility announcement names the Xbox 360-to-Series path; it does not announce a PS5 port.

Do not treat rumors of a future remaster as availability. No cited Rockstar announcement confirms a PS5 version or a release date. If GTA IV is your priority, the officially documented current-console route is an Xbox Series console rather than a PS5.

Choosing the right copy and console

If you own an Xbox 360 disc

  • Choose Xbox Series X if you want to reuse that disc.
  • Keep the disc available for every play session because it verifies ownership after installation.
  • Confirm that the disc is the Xbox 360 release, not a PS3 disc or unrelated PC package.

If you own a digital Xbox copy

  • Sign in to the Microsoft account that owns the game.
  • Look under Ready to Install before purchasing it again.
  • Check the store entry for any regional restrictions, bundle changes or separate episode add-ons.

If you have a Series S

  • Use only a digital purchase or digital entitlement.
  • Do not buy a physical disc expecting to redeem it on Series S.
  • Review the listed edition so you know whether The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony are included.

If you own a PS5

  • A PS3 GTA IV disc will not work in the console.
  • No official PS4/PS5 edition is identified by the cited sources.
  • Your practical officially supported alternatives are access to a PS3, an Xbox Series X|S console, or another platform that has a current official listing.

Price, stock and regional availability

The Xbox listing showed a base digital price of $19.99 at the time of the 2026 page crawl. That is a snapshot, not a permanent worldwide price: taxes, currency conversion, sales, delistings and regional storefront policies can change the amount or whether the listing appears at all.

Physical Xbox 360 discs are likewise subject to used-market stock, condition and seller pricing. A disc’s presence in a marketplace does not guarantee that it is the correct Xbox 360 edition or that the package includes both episodes. Check the title, platform and edition on the case and disc before relying on it for Series X compatibility.

Troubleshooting the Xbox installation

The disc is not recognized on Series X

Confirm that the disc is an Xbox 360 GTA IV release and that it is inserted into a Series X model with a working optical drive. Series S cannot recognize it because it has no drive. If the correct disc still fails to trigger the backward-compatible download, use the digital store listing or your account library to check whether the digital entitlement is available, and inspect the disc for damage.

The game is not in Ready to Install

Ready to Install shows entitlements for the account currently signed in. Switch to the Microsoft account that originally bought or redeemed GTA IV, then search the Xbox store by title. If the listing is unavailable in your region, another account or region cannot be assumed to transfer that purchase.

An episode is missing

Open the game’s store page and review the add-ons section. The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony may be separate add-ons rather than part of the base listing you installed. The edition’s current bundle description determines whether you own them.

You expected a PS5 download

There is no cited PS4/PS5 edition to download, and PS5 does not read PS3 discs. Reinstalling a PS3 purchase on PS5 therefore cannot create compatibility; use a supported Xbox entitlement or the original PS3 hardware instead.
