Grand Theft Auto VI is announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Rockstar lists November 19, 2026 as the release date and labels the PlayStation 5 version “Plays Best On.” There is no official PC version or PC release date in the launch and support information currently available. PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are not listed, so the announced launch version is not supported on those older consoles.
Which platforms support Grand Theft Auto VI at launch?
Rockstar’s confirmed launch platforms are the current-generation consoles: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The announcement covers both the standard Xbox Series X and the smaller Xbox Series S. It does not extend the game to every console in those manufacturers’ families.

| Platform | Launch status | What the official information says |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Confirmed | Rockstar lists PS5 and describes it as “Plays Best On PlayStation 5.” |
| Xbox Series X | Confirmed | Included in the Xbox Series X|S platform listing. |
| Xbox Series S | Confirmed | Included in the Xbox Series X|S platform listing. |
| PC | Unconfirmed | No official PC announcement or release date appears in the launch and support materials. |
| PlayStation 4 | Not supported by the announced launch version | PS4 is omitted from Rockstar’s platform list. |
| Xbox One | Not supported by the announced launch version | Xbox One is omitted; Microsoft’s listing identifies Xbox Series X|S instead. |
That means you need a PS5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S to play the announced console release when it launches. Owning a PS4, Xbox One, gaming PC, or an older-generation version of either console does not satisfy the stated launch requirements.

Not according to any official launch announcement available as of October 18, 2026. Rockstar has confirmed PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but its cited launch and support materials do not announce a Windows version, PC system requirements, PC storefront listing, or PC release date.
#1 Best Overall
- This product contains a download code inside the box — no disc is included. Customer shipments will begin arriving November 12 for pre-load; game is playable starting November 19. Code can only be used by users holding an account for PlayStation registered to the US or Canada.
- Pre-order to receive the Vintage Vice City Pack.
- Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience.
What “unconfirmed” means
Unconfirmed is more precise than saying a PC version will never exist. Rockstar could announce another platform in the future, but there is no official date or compatibility information to rely on now. Do not treat rumors, alleged leaks, retailer placeholders, or assumptions based on earlier games as a release commitment.
Should PC players buy hardware now?
Only buy a console if you specifically want guaranteed access to the November 19, 2026 launch. A new graphics card, processor, SSD, or gaming computer cannot be matched to official GTA VI requirements because Rockstar has not published PC requirements. Building a PC around guessed specifications could leave you overspending or still waiting for a port.
Can you use a PC to access the console version?
The announced product is a console release. The available official information does not establish a PC-native edition, a PC cloud-play option, or a supported PC streaming method for launch. Any such feature would need separate confirmation from Rockstar or the relevant platform provider.
Is GTA 6 coming to PS4?
The announced launch version is not a PS4 release. Rockstar’s official platform list names PlayStation 5, not PlayStation 4. The omission matters because the game is being announced for a specific generation rather than for the PlayStation family generally.

- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Why a PS4 copy cannot be assumed
A PS4 can run many cross-generation games, but backward compatibility is not automatic in the other direction. A PS5 game does not become a PS4 game simply because both consoles use the same account or share a store. Unless Rockstar publishes a separate PS4 edition, the PS4 hardware is outside the supported launch platform list.
What happens if you buy a PS4 version by mistake?
Check the product title and platform icon before paying. The confirmed product is the PlayStation 5 edition. A listing that says PS4, “PS4/PS5,” or uses an unverified release date should not be treated as evidence of a PS4 launch. Retailer catalog data can be incomplete or premature; Rockstar’s platform announcement is the controlling reference for compatibility.
Will GTA 6 run on Xbox One?
No Xbox One launch version has been announced. Rockstar and Microsoft identify Xbox Series X|S, while Xbox One is absent from the stated platforms. The announced launch version therefore requires an Xbox Series X or Series S for Xbox play.

Why Xbox backward compatibility does not solve this
Xbox Series consoles can run many Xbox One games through backward compatibility, but that feature is designed to run older software on newer hardware. It does not make a new Series X|S-only game run on Xbox One. A separate Xbox One build would be necessary, and none has been announced.

Series S versus Series X
Both models are included in the official Xbox Series X|S listing. The announcement does not state different release dates, editions, or feature sets between Series X and Series S. Choose between them based on your broader needs, storage, display, and budget, but both are within the confirmed GTA VI platform family.
Release date, pre-loading, and launch timing
Release date
Rockstar states that Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026. Microsoft’s product listing gives the same date for the Xbox Series X|S edition. This is a future date relative to the October 18, 2026 information point, so regional store countdowns and local release timing may still vary.
When pre-loading starts
Rockstar’s support information says pre-loading begins at local midnight on November 12, 2026. “Local midnight” refers to the time zone configured for the relevant store or console region, not one universal worldwide moment. Sign in early, keep enough free storage available, and allow time for a large download and any launch-day update.

Does pre-loading let you play early?
No. Pre-loading transfers the game before launch so it can be ready when the release window opens. It does not change the November 19 release date or grant early access unless Rockstar separately announces an edition-specific entitlement.

Digital and physical editions
Physical packaging does not contain a disc
Rockstar’s support information says the physical version is a box containing a digital download code; no disc is included. You therefore need an internet connection, a platform account, and enough console storage to download the game even when you purchase a boxed copy.
Before buying a physical copy, verify that the code matches your console region and platform. A code intended for PlayStation 5 cannot be redeemed on Xbox Series X|S, and a boxed product does not provide a disc-based fallback if the download is unavailable.

PS5 versus Xbox Series X|S: what is actually different?

“Plays Best On PlayStation 5” is Rockstar’s wording, not a published claim that Xbox Series X|S cannot deliver the same core game. The announcement confirms both console families but does not provide a frame-rate, resolution, graphics-mode, or feature comparison. Avoid treating the slogan as a technical benchmark.
What to buy if you currently own an older console or PC
If you own a PS4
- Plan on needing a PS5 for the announced launch version.
- Check whether your existing display, headset, and storage setup can move to the new console.
- Buy the PS5 edition only from a listing that clearly identifies PlayStation 5.
- Remember that the boxed edition still requires a digital download because it contains a code rather than a disc.
If you own an Xbox One
- Plan on needing an Xbox Series X or Series S.
- Confirm that your Microsoft account and store region match the code or digital purchase.
- Choose Series X or Series S based on your overall console requirements; both are in the confirmed platform family.
- Reserve sufficient storage and bandwidth for pre-loading from November 12.
If you play on PC
- Do not buy a PC copy expecting one to be available at launch; no official PC edition is announced.
- Use the November 19 date only for the confirmed console versions.
- Watch Rockstar’s official announcements for any later PC platform, date, requirements, and storefront details.
- If immediate access matters, use a confirmed PS5 or Xbox Series X|S platform rather than an unannounced PC port.
Common compatibility mistakes
- Confusing a franchise release with a specific platform release: A major series launch does not mean every current or previous console receives it.
- Reading “Xbox” as “Xbox One and Xbox Series”: The official wording is Xbox Series X|S, which excludes Xbox One from the announced launch.
- Assuming PC requirements are merely unpublished: There is no official PC announcement or date to use for planning.
- Buying a box expecting a disc: The physical package contains a download code and requires internet access.
- Trusting an unverified retailer placeholder: Use Rockstar’s platform list and the final store page rather than a generic catalog entry.
- Assuming backward compatibility works both ways: New software made for PS5 or Xbox Series does not automatically run on PS4 or Xbox One.

The franchise has sold over 470 million units worldwide, according to Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive in 2026. That figure describes franchise-wide sell-in, not Grand Theft Auto VI sales and not the number of copies available on any particular platform.
Bottom line for each platform
- PS5: Yes, confirmed; Rockstar says this is where the game plays best.
- Xbox Series X|S: Yes, confirmed for both Series X and Series S.
- PC: No official version or release date has been announced.
- PS4: No announced launch version.
- Xbox One: No announced launch version.
