Can You Play Dune: Awakening Solo in 2026? How Single-Player, Servers and PvP Work

Yes. As of Funcom’s September 2026 update, Dune: Awakening has a complete single-player mode. You can play through the full story and use the game’s features alone, with scalable difficulty and other customization settings. Multiplayer is optional: you can join friends on a shared server, run a private group server, self-host on PC, or enter a large official public server. Funcom also says multiplayer can be configured as full PvE, including the Deep Desert and faction-versus-faction content, so you do not have to accept player-versus-player combat.

What “solo” means in Dune: Awakening now

The current release is different from the game that launched in May 2025. At launch, Funcom described the game as always connecting to a server and placing players in a multiplayer environment, even when much of the content could be completed alone. That launch explanation no longer describes the current mode.

Funcom’s 2 June 2026 announcement says the full game can now be played entirely in single-player. It specifically includes the final Book One story chapter from start to finish. Bandai Namco’s official product description likewise says the full game, its features, content and story are available whether you play alone, with friends on a shared server or with a large public population.

Single-player also has controls for changing the experience. Funcom added scalable difficulty and a broad set of gameplay-customization settings for single-player and private servers. That means “solo” is not merely entering a public server and avoiding other people; it is a dedicated way to play with the challenge tuned to your preference.

Is single-player the same as offline mode?

No conclusion about a completely offline installation should be drawn from the word “single-player.” The current announcements establish that the game can be completed in single-player, but they do not state that every feature works without an internet connection or without contacting Funcom’s services. The older May 2025 statement explicitly said the launch version had no single-player or offline mode; the 2026 update changes the single-player situation, while the available announcement does not make a separate blanket promise about offline operation.

If your requirement is “I want to play alone,” the answer is yes. If your requirement is “I want to disconnect the computer from the internet,” check the current platform and game documentation before buying, because single-player and offline support are separate technical questions.

Which way can you play?

Mode Who shares the world Control and social scale Player combat
Single-player You play alone in the dedicated single-player experience. Scalable difficulty and extensive gameplay customization. No other players are present in your session.
Shared official server Other characters inhabit the same persistent server and World. Designed for meeting friends and a larger community. Current multiplayer can be configured for full PvE, making PvP optional.
Rented private server Your group controls one Hagga Basin, while World hubs and Deep Desert areas remain shared with that World’s private servers. Password, name, difficulty and several world rules can be customized. Can use the current full-PvE option.
Self-hosted server on PC You host a customized experience for your friends. No rental is required; Funcom announced self-hosting for PC in June 2026. Can be arranged around cooperative play rather than PvP.
Official public server A much larger population shares a persistent server. Best for an open community and spontaneous encounters. Choose a current PvE configuration if you want to avoid combat with players.

How single-player works in practice

Complete the story without a party

You do not need a friend, guild or public-server group to progress through the campaign. The 2026 update covers the complete game and the final Book One chapter, so the solo mode is not a shortened tutorial or a partial campaign.

Adjust challenge instead of recruiting help

Scalable difficulty lets a solo player change the level of challenge rather than relying on a larger party to compensate. Private servers expose additional gameplay settings, and Funcom describes single-player as having extensive customization as well. The exact list of available options can vary by mode and platform version, so treat the in-game settings screen as the authority for your installation.

Expect a different social experience

Single-player gives you isolation and control, but it does not provide the spontaneous trading, shared construction or community activity of an official World. If you want to play alone most of the time while retaining the option to meet friends, a private or shared server is the more flexible choice.

How official servers and Worlds are organized

Official multiplayer uses persistent servers grouped into larger structures called Worlds. A World links multiple server areas and provides shared social spaces. The arrangement is designed to let players remain part of a broader community without putting every character into one single map instance.

Funcom’s server overview, published on 6 May 2025, described a Hagga Basin server supporting about 40 concurrent players while serving several hundred home-server characters. Queues could occur when the concurrent-player limit was reached. Servers could be filtered by location and language, and the server browser showed which servers a player’s Steam friends were using.

Those capacity and queue figures belong to the launch-era overview and should not be treated as a guaranteed 2026 limit. The important current concept is persistence: your character and home server are part of an ongoing World rather than a temporary match that disappears when everyone logs out.

Visiting friends across servers

At launch, players could visit friends on any server in the same World, build at a friend’s or guild’s base and create or join guilds that crossed server boundaries. Claiming land on a visited official server was restricted. Because those rules were documented in the May 2025 overview, check the current in-game permissions before assuming that every cross-server action still works exactly the same way.

Playing with friends

Shared official server

Choose this route when you want the convenience of Funcom’s infrastructure and the possibility of meeting more players. You and your friends can select servers in the same World, visit one another and cooperate while remaining part of a persistent community. Location and language filters help narrow the server list, and the browser can identify servers used by Steam friends.

Private server

A rented private server gives the renter one complete Hagga Basin for the group. It is not an entirely sealed-off universe: the private server belongs to a World made of other private servers, so social hubs and the Deep Desert remain shared with people from that World. You do not rent or control those shared areas.

Documented private-server settings include:

  • Disabling security zones.
  • Disabling taxation.
  • Disabling sandstorms.
  • Choosing a server name.
  • Setting a password.
  • Using scalable difficulty and other gameplay customizations.

Funcom’s help documentation lists GPORTAL, Nitrado and xREALM as private-server providers. Funcom does not set their rental prices, so the cost depends on the provider, region, term and configuration available when you order.

  • Rise from survival to greatness as you grow your own piece of Arrakis from a modest crafting base into a sprawling fortress, or secure your fortune by chasing spice blows and running your own spice-refining operation
  • Play single-player and customize every aspect of your experience, or go online to team up with friends on private or public multiplayer servers

Self-hosting on PC

Funcom’s June 2026 release announcement says PC players can self-host without renting a server and customize the experience for friends. Self-hosting is therefore the option for a PC group that wants direct control without a recurring provider bill. The announcement does not promise the same self-hosting workflow on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.

Private-server limitations to understand first

Private hosting gives you control over your Hagga Basin, but it is not equivalent to owning every part of the World. Shared hubs and Deep Desert spaces remain outside the renter’s administration. Funcom’s current help article also says private servers have no admin control panel and no character transfers. Plan your group and your server choice accordingly: moving characters between private servers is not a documented feature, and you should not expect administrator tools comparable to a traditional self-hosted sandbox.

Can you avoid PvP?

Yes. Funcom’s June 2026 release notes say multiplayer supports full PvE across the game, including the Deep Desert and faction-versus-faction conflict. This is significant because those areas were previously associated with competitive encounters. With a PvE configuration, you can cooperate, explore and progress without making player combat part of your session.

PvE does not mean the world has no danger. Environmental hazards, creatures, missions and other non-player threats remain part of the game. It means the threat from other human-controlled characters is not required for multiplayer play.

How to choose the right mode

  1. Choose single-player if your priority is uninterrupted story progress, no contact with other players and full control over your own pace.
  2. Choose a shared official server if you want to meet a community, use Funcom’s hosting and retain the possibility of visiting friends within the same World.
  3. Choose a rented private server if your group wants a password-protected Hagga Basin, custom rules and a predictable group of players, while accepting that World hubs and the Deep Desert remain shared.
  4. Choose PC self-hosting if you are on PC, want to configure a friends-only experience and prefer not to rent from a provider.
  5. Select full PvE multiplayer when cooperation is the goal and you do not want faction conflict or other player combat to determine your progress.

Starting without other players

  1. Install the game on a supported platform and launch it.
  2. Select the single-player option rather than joining an official or private server.
  3. Open the available difficulty and gameplay-customization settings before beginning, then choose values that suit your preferred challenge.
  4. Start the campaign and progress through the story, including the Book One content available in the current release.

If the single-player option is missing from your menu, confirm that the game has finished updating to the current build and that you are looking at the mode-selection screen rather than the server browser. Menu names can vary slightly by platform and update.

Starting a friends-only session

  1. Decide between a rented private server and PC self-hosting.
  2. For a rented server, select a provider, choose the region and term, then configure the server name and password.
  3. Set the available world rules, such as security zones, taxation and sandstorms, before inviting the group.
  4. For PC self-hosting, use Funcom’s current PC hosting instructions and share the connection details only with the intended players.
  5. Choose full PvE if nobody wants player combat, then verify that everyone is joining the same World and server.

Platforms and editions

Bandai Namco lists Dune: Awakening for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its product page also lists a physical “Dune: Awakening – Day 1 Edition” for PS5, alongside digital options. Edition names, physical stock and retailer availability depend on region, so check the store serving your country before purchasing.

What changed since launch?

The key change is the addition of a true complete single-player experience. In May 2025, Funcom said there was no single-player or offline mode and that even solo-minded players had to connect to a multiplayer server. In June 2026, Funcom announced that the full game could be played entirely in single-player, with scalable difficulty and extensive customization. The same 2026 update also established full-PvE multiplayer across the game, including the Deep Desert and faction-versus-faction content.

For a buyer deciding today, use the current model rather than old launch reviews: solo play is a complete mode, multiplayer is optional, and PvP is not mandatory for cooperative sessions.
