The setting is available for one PS5 at a time. It does not make every game mode or network-dependent feature work offline, and Sony’s guidance does not establish that a game can be downloaded for the first time without a connection. Set up the console, download what you need, and verify each title’s requirements before disconnecting.
What “offline” means for a digital PS5 game
A digital purchase is tied to the PlayStation account that bought it. On a PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, Sony allows people using that console to play the account owner’s purchased and downloaded games and media while the console is offline. PlayStation Support summarizes the feature as: “Play games and media you’ve purchased and downloaded.”

That capability covers the basic entitlement to launch a downloaded game. It is not a promise that every part of every title works without a network. Online multiplayer, server-hosted events, cloud-dependent services, account checks, and other connected features can still require internet access. The practical question is therefore two separate questions: can the console recognize your offline license, and does the particular game offer the mode you want without a connection?

Requirements you must satisfy before disconnecting
- The game must be purchased or otherwise validly licensed. Use the account that owns the purchase, or confirm that a qualifying subscription access remains active where applicable.
- The game must already be downloaded. Sony’s offline-play guidance refers to purchased and downloaded content; it does not say that a first download can be completed offline.
- Console Sharing and Offline Play must be enabled on the intended PS5. This is the console-level authorization that lets the account’s purchases work offline for users of that machine.
- Any required patches, add-on files, or language packs should be installed while you are online. A title can launch offline yet lack content you expected if that content was never downloaded.
- The game’s own requirements still apply. A title may require a connection for multiplayer or another specific mode even though its offline campaign launches normally.
How to enable Console Sharing and Offline Play
Perform this setup while signed in to the purchasing account and connected to the internet:

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Open Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Select Enable.
Sony says the feature is automatically allowed on the first PS5 used to sign in. If you later move your purchases to another PS5, the setting must be active on that new console instead. Only one PS5 can have this sharing and offline authorization active for an account at a time, so enabling it on a second machine may require disabling it on the first.
Prepare a game for a trip, outage, or other no-internet period
1. Sign in with the account that owns the game
Open your game library and confirm that the title appears as purchased by the account currently signed in. If the game came through a subscription, verify that the subscription access has not expired or changed. A console can be online and otherwise healthy while still showing a lock if the wrong account is being used.
2. Enable the offline setting on the console you will use
Follow the Settings path above and confirm that the menu shows the feature as enabled. Do this on the physical PS5 that will be disconnected, not merely on a different console where the account was previously used.
3. Download the complete game and planned content
Start the download before leaving reliable internet access. Include updates, required installation data, expansions, and any optional packs needed for the mode you intend to play. Sony’s cited support guidance establishes offline use of downloaded purchases, not offline acquisition of the game itself, so do not wait until you are disconnected to discover that a large file is missing.
4. Launch the title once while connected
Starting the game online gives it an opportunity to finish installation and identify any initial account, update, or content requirement. Read the title’s own prompts instead of assuming that a menu item labeled “single-player” is entirely local; some games place progression, inventories, or events on their servers.
5. Test the exact offline scenario
After installation completes, disconnect the PS5 from the network or pause its connection and launch the game. Try the campaign, saved mode, or other activity you plan to use. This short test is more reliable than a general claim that a particular game is “offline compatible,” because requirements differ by title and can change with updates.
What can still require an internet connection?
Console Sharing and Offline Play addresses entitlement and local access; it does not turn online services into offline services. Expect a connection for features such as:

- Any title-specific sign-in or connectivity check required by the publisher.
The support guidance does not make a universal per-title guarantee. Check the individual game’s store information, packaging or support documentation, and in-game requirements for the mode you care about. If a game is mainly an online service, enabling the PS5 setting will not provide a substitute server when your connection is down.
Digital convenience versus offline dependence
For a buyer, the meaningful comparison is not simply “digital works” versus “digital does not work.” It is how much convenience you want in exchange for depending on downloads, account access, and one-console authorization.
| Consideration | Digital purchase setup | What it means offline |
|---|---|---|
| Getting the game | Download from the purchasing account’s library | Must be completed before disconnecting |
| License recognition | Uses the account that owns the purchase or valid subscription access | Wrong account or expired access can produce a lock |
| Console authorization | Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on one PS5 | Allows users of that authorized PS5 to launch downloaded purchases offline |
| Game modes | Determined by each title | Local modes may work; online services can remain unavailable |
| Moving to another PS5 | Requires changing the account’s authorized console | Only one PS5 can hold the setting at a time |
| Physical-disc alternative | Not part of a digital-download workflow | Buyers who want disc capability should evaluate the PS5 edition with that hardware feature separately; current model configurations and prices are not established here |
A PS5 Digital Edition can suit someone who prefers downloads, but the console name alone is not an offline-play guarantee. The decisive factors are the downloaded license, the enabled setting, and the game’s own network requirements.

A padlock icon does not identify one single fault. Work through the checks in this order so you do not delete a working installation unnecessarily.
1. Verify ownership or subscription access
Confirm that the signed-in profile bought the game. If access came from a subscription catalog, check that the subscription and the title’s catalog availability are still valid. A different family member’s profile may be able to use the game only when the owning account’s console-sharing authorization is correctly configured.
2. Check service status and system software
Reconnect temporarily and check PlayStation service status. Install any pending PS5 system-software update, then restart the console. A service outage or outdated system can prevent license information from refreshing even when the local game files are intact.
3. Confirm the console-sharing setting
Return to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play. Make sure the setting is enabled on this PS5. If it is enabled on another PS5, disable it there before enabling it here.

4. Restore licenses
On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, then follow the on-screen instructions. Sony lists license restoration as a remedy for some padlock, missing-content, and crash problems. Restoring licenses does not delete saved data.

5. Reinstall only if the license checks pass
Restart the PS5 and try the game again. If the installation is damaged or incomplete, delete the game and redownload it while connected. This uses bandwidth and time, so it belongs after account, service, software, and license checks rather than before them.
6. Use Safe Mode tools only for persistent system problems
If ordinary restarting and redownloading do not resolve a broader launch problem, Sony’s troubleshooting guidance includes Safe Mode cache and database options. Follow the on-screen instructions carefully and choose the least disruptive option appropriate to the symptom. These tools address console storage or database behavior; they cannot supply an expired purchase or an unavailable online server.
Changing the authorized PS5
The one-console limit matters if you replace a PS5, keep a second machine, or buy another console for a different room. Disable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the old PS5 before enabling it on the new one whenever possible. Sony also provides remote deactivation of all devices, but that account-management action is available only once every six months. Because remote deactivation affects device authorization rather than downloading games, you should move or download the titles again on the newly authorized console while online.
Buyer checklist before choosing digital-only gaming
- Do you have dependable internet access for large initial downloads and updates?
- Will the account that buys the games remain available to sign in and maintain valid purchases or subscriptions?
- Is the PS5 you will use offline the one authorized for Console Sharing and Offline Play?
- Have you installed every game, update, expansion, and language file needed for your planned session?
- Have you tested the specific offline mode rather than assuming the whole title works without a connection?
- Would losing access to a download temporarily be a problem if the console needed a license refresh?
- Do you need physical-disc capability, or are downloads your preferred format?
If the answers are favorable, digital PS5 ownership can work well for offline campaigns and other local modes. If your priority is playing newly purchased games immediately during an outage or without any advance setup, digital ownership requires more preparation than the purchase button alone suggests.
Bottom line
Digital PS5 games are playable offline when they are validly purchased, fully downloaded, and used on a PS5 where Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled. Set that authorization on one console, prepare the files while connected, and verify the individual game’s network requirements. When a title is locked, check account ownership, service status, system software, the sharing setting, and licenses before reinstalling.
