No—the unofficial D2R VR modification is offline single-player only. Its project README explicitly says so and warns that injecting its code while playing online can result in an account ban. The mod is not made, endorsed, or supported by Blizzard.
Diablo II: Resurrected itself does support online multiplayer, but that is a separate, unmodified experience. The Xbox listing describes online multiplayer for two to eight players, while Blizzard described Nintendo Switch groups of up to four. A VR headset or the D2R VR mod does not add co-op to those online modes.

What D2R VR is—and what it is not
D2R VR is a community-made modification for Diablo II: Resurrected, not an official Blizzard VR edition. The project adds virtual-reality views, including a first-person perspective and a mixed-reality floor view, so the game can be experienced from inside a headset. Its README identifies the project as unofficial and separate from Blizzard’s supported game client: D2R VR project README.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The modification changes how the game is displayed and controlled, but it does not turn the underlying network services into a new VR-compatible multiplayer system. The relevant question is therefore not whether Diablo II: Resurrected has multiplayer, but whether the modified VR build is allowed to connect to it. The project’s own stated limitation answers that question.

Does the D2R VR mod support co-op?
No. The README states, in direct terms, “Offline single-player only.” That means the supported D2R VR experience is a solo game using an offline character and local progress. There is no documented VR lobby, friend invitation flow, online party system, or co-op mode in the modification.
Do not interpret the base game’s multiplayer features as evidence that the mod supports them. A character created for the VR mod’s offline play is not an online character, and loading the modified client does not make that character eligible for Blizzard’s online services.
The project’s online-play warning
The same README warns: “Injecting code into the game online can get the account banned.” This is the mod author’s warning, not a statement that every attempted connection will definitely produce a ban. It is nevertheless a clear reason not to experiment with the modification in an online session. The project also says it is not made, endorsed, or supported by Blizzard.
In practical terms, treat D2R VR as an offline-only mod. If you want to play with friends, close the modified setup and use an unmodified, supported copy of Diablo II: Resurrected for online play.
How multiplayer works in the unmodified game
Diablo II: Resurrected has official online multiplayer, provided you use the game’s online mode and an online character. The player counts vary by platform and by the wording used in each platform’s documentation.
| Platform or source | Published capability | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox listing | Online multiplayer for 2–8 players | The figure comes from Microsoft’s Xbox store listing and should be read as the capability stated for that Xbox edition: Buy Diablo II: Resurrected. |
| Nintendo Switch | Online groups of up to four players | Blizzard described four-player co-op for Switch and said four players was considered optimal for handheld play: Bringing the Original Diablo II Experience to Console. |
| D2R VR modification | Offline single-player only | The project README does not describe an online player count; it explicitly limits the mod to offline solo play: D2R VR project README. |
These numbers should not be merged into one universal promise. The Xbox store’s two-to-eight description is platform-specific store information, while Blizzard’s four-player statement applies to the Switch experience. Neither figure changes the VR mod’s offline-only status.

Online and offline characters are separate
Blizzard explains that modern online functions, including inviting friends, require an online character. Offline characters are stored and played separately from online characters. If you create or use an offline character for the VR mod, it will not appear as an online character that can be invited into a friend’s game.
Recommended Free Tools
When you launch the unmodified game for multiplayer, choose the online character option and create a new online character if you have not already done so. Do not expect an offline save to carry over into an online lobby. Blizzard’s launch information and multiplayer guidance cover the distinction between these character types: Play Diablo II: Resurrected During the Early Access & Open Beta and Diablo II: Resurrected Launch Guide.
What you need for each mode
The two experiences have different practical requirements. For VR, you need the community D2R VR project, a compatible PC VR headset and the underlying PC game setup described by that project. The README also identifies BodyWalk as part of its headset integration. That integration concerns movement and immersion; it is not a Blizzard multiplayer feature and does not grant access to online lobbies.
For co-op, you need an unmodified copy of Diablo II: Resurrected, an online character and the platform’s supported online service. Blizzard’s launch guide describes the game as digital-only, with no physical edition. Buying a physical disc therefore is not an alternative route to a separate VR or LAN version, and there is no documented VR add-on that changes the online rules. The reviewed material does not establish a separate VR subscription or a multiplayer fee; the important distinction is the software mode and character type.
Why old TCP/IP multiplayer advice does not apply
Older versions of Diablo II were known for direct TCP/IP play, so some guides suggest using that method for private games. Blizzard explicitly stated that “TCP/IP support will not be available in the upcoming Beta or the final game.” The decision was tied to security concerns.

Can you combine the VR mod with online friends?
There is no supported combination of D2R VR’s headset views and the game’s online co-op. The project describes its own mode as offline single-player, and its warning specifically addresses the risk of injecting code into online play. Therefore, do not join a friend’s online lobby with the modified client, and do not inject the VR code after entering an online game.
The safe distinction is operational:
- VR session: use the community modification with an offline character and remain offline.
- Friend session: run an unmodified copy of Diablo II: Resurrected, select an online character, and use the official online multiplayer system.
- Headset assumption: wearing a PC VR headset does not change the game’s network mode or increase the player limit.
Nothing in the project documentation establishes a supported VR client-side view that lets one player join the same online game while others use the normal display. Treat claims that the mod can be safely used in online lobbies as unverified and contrary to the project’s stated limitation.
Which option fits your goal?
If your priority is playing Diablo II in VR
- Use the D2R VR project only in its documented offline, single-player configuration.
- Choose an offline character and keep the session disconnected from online play.
- Use the mod’s VR views and headset integration as a solo experience; a headset is part of the display setup, not a multiplayer entitlement.
If your priority is playing with friends
- Launch an unmodified installation of Diablo II: Resurrected.
- Select or create an online character. Friend invites and other online features require this character type.
- Use the platform’s supported online service. On Xbox, Microsoft lists online multiplayer for two to eight players; on Switch, Blizzard described groups of up to four.
- Do not use the D2R VR injector or other modification code in that online session.
If you want both experiences
You can keep the goals separate: play the community mod offline when you want VR, then return to the unmodified game for online sessions. The evidence does not establish that the same character, launch mode, or modified process can safely serve both purposes. Keeping the VR session offline avoids confusing offline saves with online characters and avoids the mod author’s account-risk warning.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon problems and what they mean
“I cannot invite my VR character.”
That is expected if the character was created or used in offline mode. Friend invitations require an online character in the unmodified game. Start or select an online character instead; an offline save cannot simply be converted into an online lobby character.
“My friend sees a different player limit.”
Check the platform being discussed. The Xbox store listing states online multiplayer for two to eight players, while Blizzard’s Switch announcement states up to four players. Those are platform-specific published figures, not a guarantee that every edition exposes the same lobby size.
“Can I use a TCP/IP guide to make VR co-op work?”
No. Blizzard said TCP/IP support would not be present in the final Resurrected game. Old Diablo II networking instructions do not provide a supported path for Resurrected or for the VR modification.

“Will a VR headset let me join a normal online game?”
No. The headset changes the presentation and input experience. It does not supply online services, change an offline character into an online character, or override the mod’s offline-only limitation.
“Is a ban guaranteed if I try?”
No guarantee is stated. The project author warns that injecting code into online play can get an account banned. Because the warning concerns account risk and the mod is documented as offline-only, attempting online injection is not a responsible troubleshooting step.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The clear answer
You cannot officially play the D2R VR modification with friends: it is documented as offline single-player only. You can play Diablo II: Resurrected online with friends in the unmodified game, using online characters and the platform’s supported service—up to eight players according to the Xbox listing, or up to four on Nintendo Switch according to Blizzard. Keep those modes separate, and never inject the VR modification into an online session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I invite an offline VR character to a friend’s game?
No. Blizzard treats offline and online characters as separate. Friend invites require an online character in the unmodified game, so create or select one there rather than trying to convert the VR save.
Does the D2R VR mod add a private lobby or LAN mode?
No such feature is documented. The project README limits the modification to offline single-player, and Blizzard removed TCP/IP support from Resurrected.

Can one player use VR while friends use regular screens?
There is no supported configuration documented for that arrangement. The VR project is offline-only, so do not inject it into an online party.
Will using BodyWalk make multiplayer work?
No. BodyWalk is identified as part of the project’s headset integration, not as an online or co-op service.
Is there a physical edition I can buy for VR or LAN play?
Blizzard’s launch guide describes Diablo II: Resurrected as digital-only, with no physical versions. A purchase format does not change the mod’s networking limitation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Is an account ban certain if I test the mod online?
No certainty is stated, but the project author warns that injecting code online can get an account banned. Because the mod is documented as offline-only, testing it online carries avoidable risk.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: D2R VR is an unofficial, offline single-player modification. For co-op, use an unmodified Diablo II: Resurrected installation with online characters and the official service—up to eight players on the Xbox listing or up to four on Switch. Keep the VR injector out of every online session.
