Can You Play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Steam Deck? Setup and Performance Tips (2026)

Yes. Steam currently marks Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as Steam Deck Verified, lists full controller support, and recommends using a controller. That is the clearest current answer for anyone deciding whether to install it on a Deck.

Verified status does not promise a fixed frame rate on every Deck model, SteamOS release, Proton version, or game patch. The most defensible approach is to start with Steam’s default configuration, then make small changes only if your own Deck needs them. A dated OLED community report shows a workable 30-FPS setup, but it also recorded dips and should not be treated as a universal preset.

What Steam Deck Verified means for Expedition 33

Steam’s compatibility label is the strongest official signal available for this game on Deck. The store page identifies Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as one of the top-played games on Steam Deck, confirms full controller support, and says the developers recommend a controller. In practical terms, the game is presented as suitable for Deck play without requiring an unofficial workaround before you launch it.

That label is about compatibility and the expected handheld experience, not a benchmark certificate. It does not specify a guaranteed 30, 40, or 60 frames per second for every hardware revision. Performance can change when the game, Proton, or SteamOS changes. Treat “Verified” as permission to begin with the normal Steam installation and current defaults, then tune from there.

  • Carrying case with removable liner

What the label does not tell you

  • It does not establish a universal frame-rate target for the original LCD Deck or a Steam Deck OLED.
  • It does not turn the game’s Windows PC requirements into Deck-specific performance measurements.
  • It does not mean that every graphics setting will remain ideal after a future patch.
  • It does not make an old community configuration an official recommendation.

Game and storefront context

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was released on April 24, 2025. Sandfall Interactive developed it and Kepler Interactive published it. The Steam version is the relevant edition for this guide, and the store does not identify separate Deck-specific editions or competing installation packages that would require different settings.

That matters when you compare advice online. A video may be showing a Windows desktop build, a different storefront, or an earlier game version. Confirm that the instructions apply to the Steam release installed on your Deck before copying a Proton override or graphics profile.

Check storage before downloading

Steam’s published PC requirements call for 55 GB of available storage and an SSD. Those figures are the game’s stated PC requirements, not a separate Deck benchmark. Make sure the destination you choose has at least that much free space before starting the download, with additional room available for Steam’s download and update process.

Steam does not state that a microSD card is mandatory. You can install to internal storage or to a suitably fast card that your Deck already uses; the official requirement only says that an SSD is required. If you are short on space, check the free-space figure in Steam’s storage manager before moving the game rather than assuming the Verified badge changes the requirement.

Do not confuse the download size shown at one moment with the total space needed over the life of the installation. Patches can require temporary working room while Steam replaces files. Leaving headroom is especially useful for a large role-playing game that may receive multiple updates.

Install and launch the Steam version

  1. Open Library. Select Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in your Steam Deck library.
  2. Choose the installation location. Pick internal storage or your configured game-storage device and confirm that at least 55 GB is available.
  3. Install the game. Let Steam finish the download and any first-run setup instead of interrupting the process during a compatibility-tool change.
  4. Keep Compatibility at its normal setting. Because the current listing is Verified, do not force an older Proton version or apply a community workaround as a prerequisite.
  5. Launch with the built-in controls first. Steam lists full controller support and recommends a controller, so begin with the Deck’s standard handheld layout before adding custom remaps.
  6. Play through the opening section. Use the prologue and the first act as your own baseline. Note frame pacing, image clarity and any dips before changing several settings at once.

Menu names can vary slightly with SteamOS revisions, but the principle is stable: use the current Steam installation and default compatibility path first. Changing one variable at a time makes it possible to identify whether a setting actually helped.

Start with a no-tuning baseline

The sensible first profile is the one Steam provides today: current game files, current SteamOS updates, the default compatibility tool and the game’s own default graphics settings. This avoids carrying forward instructions written for an earlier build. The Steam listing records a version 1.5.6 patch announcement dated June 30, 2026; older guides may describe behavior from a different build.

Play for long enough to reach more than the opening minutes before judging the result. A short menu test cannot show how the Deck handles exploration, effects-heavy encounters or a sustained session. Watch for three separate things:

  • Image quality: Are text, character details and distant scenery readable at handheld resolution?
  • Frame-rate stability: Does motion remain consistent, or do you notice repeated drops during traversal or combat?
  • Input response: Do controls remain responsive when effects and camera movement increase?

If all three are acceptable, leave the defaults alone. Extra overlays, forced compatibility tools and aggressive frame-generation settings add complexity without proving that the game needs them.

Performance settings when the default is not enough

If your Deck does not hold the experience you want, change the least important visual settings first and test again. A 30-FPS cap is a reasonable troubleshooting option because it gives the system a clear frame-time target, but it is not an official Deck requirement or a guarantee that every scene will meet it.

A conservative 30-FPS approach

A community report published June 27, 2025 on a Steam Deck OLED described one configuration using low shadows, low global illumination, low post-processing, low visual effects, low foliage and low shading. The player limited the game to 30 FPS, used Proton’s default compatibility tool and added a Decky frame-generation configuration. The report observed dips below 30 FPS in the prologue, followed by more stable 30-FPS play from Act 1 with minor combat dips.

This is useful as a starting experiment, not as a promise. It is one player’s observation on one OLED device, made before the June 2026 patch announcement. You may get a different result on an LCD Deck, on a later game build, or with different SteamOS and Proton versions. If you try the approach, change the in-game settings first, then add a frame-rate limit; leave frame generation as an optional experiment rather than treating it as required.

Settings trade-offs

Approach Image quality Frame-rate stability Manual configuration
Current Steam defaults Uses the game’s normal presentation Must be measured on your Deck Lowest
30-FPS cap with selected low settings Lower shadows, lighting, effects, foliage and shading than the default profile Designed around a 30-FPS target; the dated OLED report still saw dips Moderate
Additional community frame-generation setup May alter perceived motion and visual artifacts Outcome depends on the individual Deck and software versions Highest

The table separates what the report actually documented from what you must test yourself. No official Steam document supplies a Deck-wide benchmark for these profiles.

How to apply a frame-rate limit

  1. Open the Deck’s Quick Access menu while the game is running.
  2. In the Performance section, enable the frame-rate limit and select 30 FPS if that option is available in your SteamOS version.
  3. Return to the game and test the same area that previously produced a drop.
  4. Keep the limit only if frame pacing feels more consistent. Remove it if it makes controls or motion feel worse for your preferences.

Use the game’s own graphics menu for quality changes. Avoid lowering every option immediately: reducing shadows or post-processing may provide a better compromise than making the entire image look flat.

Choosing what to lower first

The dated OLED example lowered several categories together, but you can use a more controlled sequence on your own Deck. Start with shadows and global illumination, then test post-processing and visual effects. Foliage and shading can follow if traversal scenes remain difficult. After every change, return to the same area and compare motion, clarity and input response.

There is no official ranking that proves one setting is always the best sacrifice. A setting that helps in a busy combat scene may make little difference in a quiet corridor, while a lower-quality image may be more distracting than a brief dip. Keep a simple record of the previous value so you can reverse a change without resetting the entire profile.

How to interpret the official PC requirements

Steam publishes two Windows PC targets for the release. The minimum target is described as 1080p at 30 FPS on low settings; the recommended target is 1080p at 60 FPS on high settings. These are desktop-PC targets and should not be translated into an expected Deck frame rate.

Target Operating system Processor Memory Graphics Storage and API
Minimum (1080p, 30 FPS, low) Windows 10 Intel Core i7-8700K or AMD Ryzen 5 1600X 8 GB RAM GTX 1060 6 GB, Radeon RX 5600 XT 6 GB, or Intel Arc A380 6 GB 55 GB; SSD; DirectX 12
Recommended (1080p, 60 FPS, high) Windows 11 Intel Core i7-12700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 16 GB RAM RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB or Radeon RX 6800 XT 16 GB 55 GB; SSD; DirectX 12

The table explains why desktop numbers cannot answer the Deck question by themselves. A Deck is a different fixed hardware and software platform, and Steam’s listing does not publish a corresponding Deck specification table or laboratory frame-rate result. In particular, “minimum 30 FPS” describes the listed Windows configuration at 1080p low; it is not a claim that a Deck will deliver 30 FPS at its own display resolution.

LCD Deck versus Steam Deck OLED

The official compatibility label applies to Steam Deck play generally; it does not publish a separate performance promise for each hardware revision. An OLED owner may find the dated community report useful as a reference point, while an LCD owner should treat it only as an example from different hardware.

Do not buy a particular Deck model solely on the assumption that this game will run at a stated frame rate. The available evidence establishes compatibility, controller support and one player’s 30-FPS configuration, but not a controlled comparison between LCD and OLED models. If you already own a Deck, your own test in the prologue and Act 1 is more relevant than a model-wide claim that Steam has not published.

Rank #3

Is a Deck purchase justified for this game?

If you already own a Deck, the Verified badge and full controller support make installation a reasonable choice. If you are considering buying a Deck specifically for Expedition 33, treat the game as one factor rather than a guaranteed hardware test. Steam does not publish a model-by-model frame-rate result, and the only detailed handheld report cited here is a single OLED configuration from June 2025.

Similarly, there is no evidence that an OLED model is required, that internal storage is mandatory, or that a particular accessory is needed for basic play. The practical decision is whether you value handheld play and can accept testing a 30-FPS profile if the default settings are not comfortable.

Troubleshooting common problems

The game will not launch

  1. Confirm that Steam finished downloading the game and any pending update.
  2. Restart the Deck and try the default compatibility setting again.
  3. Use Steam’s file-verification command from the game’s Properties menu if the installation may be incomplete.
  4. Only after testing the default path should you experiment with another compatibility tool; record the original setting so you can restore it.

Because the game is currently Verified, a forced Proton version should be treated as a diagnostic experiment, not the normal fix.

The frame rate drops during the prologue or combat

  1. Check whether the drop repeats in the same scene rather than judging from a single hitch.
  2. Apply a 30-FPS cap and retest.
  3. Lower shadows, global illumination, post-processing, visual effects, foliage and shading in stages, following the categories documented by the June 2025 OLED report.
  4. Stop when the image becomes less readable than the performance improvement justifies.

The report itself saw prologue dips and minor combat dips even after its changes, so occasional drops do not automatically indicate a faulty installation.

The picture looks soft or unpleasant

Undo the last quality reduction and test again. A stable cap is not useful if the resulting image is uncomfortable to read. Keep a short note of each change; restoring the previous profile is faster than trying to remember several simultaneous edits.

Controls feel wrong

Return to the standard controller layout. Steam lists full controller support and recommends a controller, so custom community layouts are optional rather than required for basic play.

An update changed the behavior

Note the game version, SteamOS version, Deck model and graphics settings before comparing results with another player. Re-test the current default profile first. A previous tweak may now be unnecessary, or a setting that once worked may need a fresh evaluation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How patches can change your result

Game updates, Proton revisions and SteamOS updates can all alter compatibility or frame pacing. The store listing’s June 30, 2026 announcement for patch v1.5.6 is a reminder that a guide written before that build may no longer describe the same behavior. Before relying on a dated settings video or forum post, check the current Steam listing and note the game version installed on your Deck.

When an update arrives, retest with the default profile before carrying over an old tweak. If the new build performs better, remove unnecessary overrides. If it performs worse, document the exact version, Deck model and settings so that any later troubleshooting remains reproducible.

A practical decision checklist

  • Install: You have at least 55 GB free and an SSD-based destination.
  • Compatibility: You are using the current Steam release and have not forced an old Proton tool without a reason.
  • Controls: The standard handheld controller layout works before you add custom mappings.
  • Baseline: You have tested the default settings beyond the opening menu.
  • Tuning: You changed one graphics option at a time and evaluated the same scene after each change.
  • Frame target: You use a 30-FPS cap only if it improves consistency on your own Deck.
  • Updates: You recheck settings after game, SteamOS or Proton updates.

What you can confidently expect

You can install and play Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 on Steam Deck using the official Steam version: the current store listing calls it Verified, confirms full controller support and recommends a controller. You should not expect Steam’s Windows requirements to tell you a guaranteed Deck frame rate. The strongest performance evidence beyond the badge is a single June 2025 OLED report that reached a mostly stable 30 FPS after lowering several settings, while still seeing dips.

Valve Steam Deck 1TB Upgraded Handheld Gaming Console with Carring case, 1280 x 800 OLED Display Silicone Soft Cover Protector & Joystic Cap & Tempered Glass Film Bundle
  • Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
  • Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
  • Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
  • Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
  • The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.

That makes the game a sensible Deck installation for players willing to evaluate their own device, not a title with a published universal performance preset. Start from current defaults, keep the installation straightforward, and tune toward a stable experience only when your own testing shows that you need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Steam Deck Verified?

Yes. Steam’s current listing marks it Steam Deck Verified and identifies it as one of the top-played games on Steam Deck.

How much storage does the game need on Steam Deck?

Steam lists 55 GB of available storage and requires an SSD for the PC release. Leave extra room for downloads and updates.

Do I need a microSD card or a special accessory?

No such requirement is listed. Steam specifies an SSD, but does not say that a microSD card or accessory is mandatory.

Can the Deck run the game at 60 FPS?

Steam’s 60-FPS recommendation is for a Windows PC at 1080p high settings, not a Deck benchmark. The store does not promise 60 FPS on any Deck model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 30 FPS realistic on Steam Deck?

A June 27, 2025 OLED community report reached mostly stable 30 FPS from Act 1 after lowering several settings, but it saw prologue and combat dips. Treat that as one dated example, not a guarantee.

Should I force a different Proton version?

Start with Steam’s default compatibility setting because the game is Verified. Try another Proton version only as a diagnostic step if your own installation has a problem.

What should I lower first if performance is poor?

Test shadows, global illumination, post-processing, visual effects, foliage and shading one at a time. The dated OLED report used low values for those categories.

Does the OLED model run it better than the LCD model?

Steam does not publish a controlled LCD-versus-OLED comparison. The available OLED report is a single player’s result and should not be generalized.
