Yes, but only in specific cases. On Xbox, buying a paid Call of Duty game does not include the subscription needed for online console multiplayer. Microsoft’s current Call of Duty: Modern Warfare listing says online multiplayer on console requires an eligible Xbox Game Pass plan and that subscriptions are sold separately.
Warzone is the exception: Xbox says a Game Pass Core subscription is not required for Call of Duty: Warzone. If you want a paid Call of Duty release’s regular online modes, you need both the game license and an eligible online-multiplayer subscription. If you use Xbox Cloud Gaming for a listed Call of Duty title, Activision requires an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription for the linked Xbox account.

What “without Game Pass” means on Xbox
People asking whether they can play Call of Duty multiplayer without Game Pass are usually asking one of three different questions:
- Can they play a purchased Call of Duty game online without paying for any subscription?
- Can they play the free-to-play Warzone product without Game Pass Core?
- Can they stream a Call of Duty game through Xbox Cloud Gaming without Game Pass Ultimate?
Those situations have different rules. Ownership and online-service access are separate entitlements on Xbox. Purchasing a game gives the account a license to use that game, but it does not automatically provide the console online-multiplayer service required by the platform.
#1 Best Overall
- XBOX CROSS-GEN BUNDLE – Includes Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 for Xbox Series X, and Xbox One devices with a disc drive.
- CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 7 – Treyarch and Raven Software are bringing players the most mind-bending Black Ops ever.
- CAMPAIGN MODE – Squad up or go solo in an innovative Co-Op Campaign that redefines the Black Ops experience. Take on high-stakes challenges across a wide spectrum of environments, from the neon-lit rooftops of Japan to the Mediterranean coast, and even into the deepest corners of the human psyche.
- MULTIPLAYER MODE – Multiplayer explodes out of the gate with 16 electrifying 6v6 maps and two 20v20 maps at launch. From futuristic Tokyo vistas to the frozen, unforgiving wilds of Alaska, every environment is brimming with danger and opportunity. Master a cutting-edge arsenal and outmaneuver your enemies with an evolved Omnimovement system.
- ROUND-BASED ZOMBIES MODE – The nightmare begins where reality ends. Trapped in the heart of the Dark Aether, the crew is thrust into a vast, ever-shifting hellscape. This isn’t just survival. It’s a descent into madness.
The answer also depends on the mode and the way you access it. A paid console copy, free-to-play Warzone, and a cloud-streamed game should not be treated as interchangeable products.
Paid Call of Duty games still need an online-multiplayer subscription
For a paid Call of Duty release played locally on an Xbox console, you generally need two things:
- Ownership of the paid game. This can be the license associated with your Xbox account or another valid form of access recognized by the console.
- An eligible Xbox Game Pass plan for online console multiplayer. The current Microsoft Store listing for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare states: “Online multiplayer on console requires XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately).”
The practical result is simple: buying Modern Warfare or another paid Call of Duty release does not remove the console subscription requirement. The purchase and the online service are billed and managed separately.
What happens if you own the game but lack the subscription?
You may be able to install the game, launch it, and use any permitted offline content, but the online console multiplayer portion can remain unavailable until the account has an eligible plan. The exact in-game message can vary by title and by the current Xbox entitlement system, so the store listing for the edition you own is the authoritative check.
Why the wording matters
The Microsoft listing describes the subscription as a requirement for “online multiplayer on console,” not as part of the game purchase. That wording separates the game license from the platform service. A one-time game purchase therefore should not be interpreted as a lifetime pass for Xbox online multiplayer.
Can you play Warzone for free on Xbox?
Yes. Warzone is the important exception for Xbox players who want Call of Duty online play without a Game Pass subscription.
Xbox’s current Warzone listing says: “A Game Pass Core subscription is not required to play Call of Duty®: Warzone™. All other online modes still require Game Pass Core.” This identifies Warzone as the free-to-play product whose online access does not require Core.

What the Warzone exception covers
- You do not need to purchase the paid Call of Duty release merely to access Warzone.
- You do not need Game Pass Core for Warzone, according to the current Xbox listing.
- The exemption applies to Warzone itself, not automatically to every online mode associated with Call of Duty.
What it does not cover
Warzone’s free-to-play status does not unlock the multiplayer modes of a separately sold Call of Duty game. If you switch from Warzone to the paid release’s standard multiplayer, campaign-linked online features, or other modes covered by that game’s license, the paid game and the applicable online-service requirement still apply.
Warzone availability remains subject to the platform and account requirements shown in the current Xbox listing. If Microsoft changes the listing or separates products differently, check the product page for the exact version you are installing.
Xbox Cloud Gaming has a separate requirement
Streaming a Call of Duty game through Xbox Cloud Gaming is not the same as owning and running the console version. Activision’s support guidance says the linked Xbox account must have an active Game Pass Ultimate subscription to play the listed Call of Duty games through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Cloud access versus console ownership
| Question | Console copy | Xbox Cloud Gaming |
|---|---|---|
| Is the game streamed? | No; it is accessed through the console installation or local entitlement. | Yes; the game is streamed on supported devices. |
| What subscription rule is stated? | Paid titles require an eligible plan for online console multiplayer. | Activision requires active Game Pass Ultimate for the linked account for listed Call of Duty cloud games. |
| Does cloud access prove ownership? | A purchased game supplies a console license. | Streaming access should not be treated as ownership of the console game. |
This distinction matters if you are trying to avoid Game Pass. A person may own a console copy yet still need a separate online-multiplayer plan for online play. A person who does not own the console copy may still be able to stream a listed title, but only with the Ultimate subscription requirement stated by Activision.

Which setup applies to you?
You bought a paid Call of Duty game for Xbox
Plan on the game purchase and online subscription as two separate costs and entitlements. Check the current Microsoft Store listing for your exact game and edition, then confirm that the account playing online has an eligible Game Pass plan. If the account owns the game but has no eligible online entitlement, purchasing the game again will not solve the multiplayer requirement.
You only want Warzone
Use the Warzone product rather than assuming you need the full paid release. Xbox specifically says Core is not required for Warzone. This is the route for Xbox players who want Call of Duty online play without a Game Pass subscription, provided they meet the listing’s current platform and account requirements.
You want to stream Call of Duty
Check that the title is among the Call of Duty games supported through Xbox Cloud Gaming and that the Xbox account linked to the service has active Game Pass Ultimate. Cloud access follows Activision’s streaming rule, not the rule for a locally installed console copy.

You want both Warzone and paid multiplayer
Treat them as separate products. Warzone can use the free-to-play exception, while the paid game’s online modes remain governed by the paid title’s ownership and online-service requirements. Installing Warzone does not substitute for buying a paid release, and buying the paid release does not eliminate the subscription requirement.

How to check your requirement before launching
- Identify the product. Confirm whether the tile or store page is Warzone, a paid Call of Duty release, or a cloud-streamed title.
- Identify the access method. Decide whether you are playing locally on an Xbox console or through Xbox Cloud Gaming. The cloud rule is separate.
- Read the current product listing. Look for the online-multiplayer requirement attached to the exact game and edition. Microsoft’s paid-game listing states that subscriptions are sold separately.
- Check the account used for play. The account that launches multiplayer or is linked to cloud gaming must have the relevant entitlement. For cloud gaming, Activision specifically requires active Ultimate on the linked Xbox account.
- Match the mode to the entitlement. Warzone follows the no-Core exception; other online modes can still require the applicable Game Pass plan.
- Recheck after a plan or product change. Xbox plan names, included benefits, and game-specific requirements can change by date, region, edition, or mode.
Common mistakes and how to resolve them
“I paid for the game, so multiplayer should be included.”
Ownership and console online multiplayer are separate. Return to the game’s current store requirement and verify the account’s eligible Game Pass entitlement. The purchase itself does not satisfy the subscription clause.
“Warzone is free, so every Call of Duty mode is free.”
The free-to-play exception is tied to Warzone. Xbox’s wording explicitly says that all other online modes still require Game Pass Core. Select the Warzone product when that is the experience you intend to play.
“I have Game Pass, so cloud gaming must work.”
Cloud gaming has a specific Ultimate requirement in Activision’s guidance. A different Game Pass tier should not be assumed to provide the same cloud entitlement for the listed Call of Duty titles.
“Core and the newer plan names must mean exactly the same thing.”
The sources use different labels: the Warzone listing refers to Game Pass Core, while the current paid-game listing names Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate. Do not infer equivalence from the names alone. Use the requirement displayed for the exact product, region, and date you are checking.

Why answers can differ between games and dates
Xbox presents online multiplayer as a Game Pass Core benefit, while individual store listings can name the plans accepted for a particular game. Product pages can also distinguish free-to-play and paid content, and cloud gaming introduces another access model. As a result, an answer that is correct for Warzone may be wrong for a paid Modern Warfare release or for a streamed title.
The information above reflects the Xbox and Activision statements available on October 18, 2026. Subscription tiers, included benefits, regional availability, and game-specific wording are subject to change. Before purchasing a game or plan, verify the current listing for your country and the exact edition you intend to use.
The practical decision
If your goal is paid Call of Duty multiplayer on an Xbox console, budget for both the game and an eligible online-multiplayer Game Pass plan. If your goal is Warzone alone, Xbox says you can play it without Game Pass Core. If your goal is cloud streaming, Activision requires Game Pass Ultimate for the linked Xbox account. Those are different access paths, and owning one does not automatically grant the others.
